Breaking Baz: ‘The Holdovers’ Da’Vine Joy Randolph Pays Homage To Isabel Sanford’s ‘Weezy’; And How She Sacrificed Her Private Life To Her Career
Image
Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers is set in the last weeks of 1970 and, if attention is paid, you’ll see Da’Vine Joy Randolph pay homage to Isabel Sanford, particularly how the tv legend wore her hair when she played Louise “Weezy” Jefferson in the classic TV comedy The Jeffersons.

“I do this all the time with my characters,” Randolph tells me as she explains how she likes to distract herself from “Da’Vine,” and of how she has sacrificed much of her private life to her professional life.

Disney announced the name, arrival date and more details about its reimagined Splash Mountain ride on Friday during a special Essence Fest panel held at New Orleans’ Preservation Hall.

The revamped attraction, titled Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, will make its debut at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland in late 2024, according to the Disney Parks Blog. The experience will pick up where the film left off, with riders joining the movie’s leading characters Princess Tiana, Naveen and the jazz-loving alligator Louis on a bayou adventure that sees the trio hosting a Mardi Gras celebration. Disney promises that the attraction will feature both new and familiar faces to the New Orleans-based universe,...

Leah Chase, who taught the nation about Creole food at her Dooky Chase’s restaurant in New Orleans and was a celebrity chef who appeared in numerous TV shows and film documentaries, has died. She passed Saturday at her son’s home near her New Orleans restaurant.

Along the way, Leah Chase’s expertise in Creole cooking drew national attention. Cookbooks, innumerable media interviews and television shows, and film documentaries cataloged this unique regional cuisine. Princess Tiana, who wanted to own a restaurant in the animated Disney feature The Princess and the Frog, was based on Chase. Tiana was the first...

'Top Chef: New Orleans': Gail Simmons puts up with the heat for the gumbo
In late May, Bravo's "Top Chef" arrived in New Orleans to film its 11th season, premiering on Wednesday, Oct. 2, in a city famed for fun, food and fabulous music. Production wrapped in early July.

But sitting as it does on the Gulf Coast in the Deep South of the U.S., the Big Easy is also known for warm weather -- and the "Top Chef" team could hardly have picked a toastier time of year.

"We mixed it up a lot. We're indoors; we're outdoors. We go into the countryside.
