BBC News Calls Off Ill-Fated Plan For First Royal Editor In Its History
Image
Exclusive: BBC News has scrapped plans to hire the first royal editor in its history after a messy recruitment process in which the UK broadcaster missed out on its preferred candidate.

Deadline revealed in August that the search had been thrown into doubt after Roya Nikkhah, The Sunday Times royal editor and CBS News contributor, decided to stay put at the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper.

Richard Burgess, director of news content at BBC News, announced that the recruitment process had been abandoned in an email to staff this week. The email detailed structural newsroom changes as part of plans to close 130 journalism roles.

Burgess said: “Like many other media organisations, we need to adapt to new audience challenges, and we continue to operate against a very difficult financial picture across the BBC. This means our newsroom must continue to evolve.”

BBC News’ search became a months-long saga after the corporation initially passed over two internal candidates.

BBC News’ Search For First Royal Editor In Doubt After Top Choice Turns Down Role
Image
Exclusive: BBC News’ search for its first royal editor has been thrown into uncertainty after the British broadcaster missed out on its top candidate.

Sources told Deadline that Roya Nikkhah, The Sunday Times royal editor and CBS News contributor, was BBC News’ preferred pick, but she has decided to stay put at the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper.

Nikkhah was highly regarded by the BBC having featured in prestige coverage, including commentating on Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee alongside David Dimbleby. Nikkhah declined to comment.

Two people familiar with the process argued that it had become a “debacle” after the BBC turned away other candidates before Nikkhah elected to stick with The Sunday Times.

Interviews for the role took place in June, with other candidates thought to include ITV News’ royal editor Chris Ship and Rhiannon Mills, Sky News’ royal correspondent.

Nikkhah’s decision has raised questions about BBC News’ appetite...

5 Epic Snubs Doled Out to Archie and Lilibet By The Royal Family
Image
British royal family news reveals that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fled the royal family in 2020 in order to make a fast buck. How did that turn out? If you consider giving away free jam to be a lucrative enterprise, then the Markles are batting a thousand.

In the end the couple’s selfish desire to be US millionaires has cost their kids some legitimacy. Here are the most glaring snubs to come Archie and Lilibet’s way after their wayward parents decided to make the royals the bad guys with atrocious rants against the hands that fed, clothed, and protected them.

The Royals Ignored Prince Archie’s Birthday

This year Prince Archie turned 5 and didn’t receive a public birthday tribute from the royal family. Royal expert Danielle Stacey told Hello! that “the palace doesn’t typically share messages on the likes of Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall...

Prince Harry Would Have Seen King Charles On His Trip To UK For Invictus Games
Prince Harry
According to a royal expert, Prince Harry will see his father when he returns to the UK this May for Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary. The last time they saw was in February, shortly after the news of the King’s cancer diagnosis was made public.

If he does see the King, it will mark the second time he’s seen his father face-to-face following his cancer diagnosis and treatments.

Prince Harry’s Relationship With Dad King Charles Labelled “Difficult”

On May 8, Harry will attend a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral as part of the Invictus Games tour.

There, he is expected to give a keynote speech, but it’s unlikely other members of the Royal Family will be showing up to support him, especially brother Prince William who helped launch Invictus Games back in the day.

Harry’s slate of engagements in the UK somehow crashes with the King’s,...

Royal family fans have Meghan Markle’s back as Prince Harry travels to the UK alone
Image
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry support the charity Invictus Games by attending events as often as possible.

The couple even combined an event in Canada for the Winter Games with their Valentine’s Day celebrations earlier this year. They were able to enjoy a pleasant time without the kids.

Now, during the game’s crucial tenth anniversary, there is a ceremony in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2024, and they are both invited to attend, but unfortunately, that will not happen.

It has been announced that Prince Harry will attend the ceremony without Meghan Markle, but she will join him in Nigeria later in the month. However, the reasons for this have not been stated publicly.

As reported by Newsweek, Meghan Markle last publicly visited the UK in September 2022 for the late Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, and it seems that she will not be returning anytime soon.

BBC Sparks Anger After Going Back To Drawing Board In Search For First Royal Editor
Image
Exclusive: BBC News’ search for its first royal editor has been blown wide open after the British broadcaster passed over two leading internal candidates.

The BBC has advertised the royal editor post externally for the first time, just days after it was expected to be offered to either Mark Easton, BBC News’ home editor, or royal correspondent Daniela Relph.

The prestige on-air role is likely to attract interest from high-profile external candidates, with BBC sources already speculating that Roya Nikkhah, The Sunday Times royal editor and CBS News contributor, would be the candidate to beat, should she wish to apply.

There is anger, however, that Easton and Relph have been overlooked. “The whole thing stinks,” said an insider familiar with the process. A second person added: “Daniela and Mark are very very unhappy.”

Several sources said Easton, a vastly experienced BBC journalist, was asked to complete a written test as part of his application process,...

BBC Close To Crowning First Royal Editor Amid Kate Middleton & King Charles Cancer Battles
Image
Exclusive: BBC News is close to crowning its first royal editor after narrowing the field of candidates down to a final two.

Deadline understands that the prestige on-air role is expected to be offered to either Mark Easton, BBC News’ home editor, or royal correspondent Daniela Relph.

The successful candidate will step into a newly-created role, but effectively replaces Nicholas Witchell, who retired as a BBC royal correspondent after 25 years.

Easton has little experience of covering the royal family, but has been home editor since 2004, overseeing major stories including the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Sources said Easton could bring a “more ballsy” approach to the BBC’s royal output, with the corporation sometimes seen as being cautious in its coverage of the royal family.

Relph has reported on the royals for more than a decade and appeared on the BBC’s News at Six bulletin on the day Kate Middleton announced her cancer diagnosis.

Stephen Colbert Appears Remorseful Over Kate Middleton Skit After Cancer Diagnosis: “When I Made Those Jokes, That Upset Some People”
Image
Stephen Colbert has acknowledged that his skit about Kate Middleton upset people in a downbeat monologue following the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis.

The Late Show host dedicated two minutes to Middleton on Monday’s episode, saying that jokes he made about Prince William having an affair did not go down well with some viewers.

“There’s a standard that I try to hold myself to, and that is I do not make light of somebody else’s tragedy,” Colbert said. “Far too many of us know that any cancer diagnosis of any kind is harrowing for the patient and for their family.”

He added: “Though I’m sure they don’t need it from me, I and everyone here at The Late Show, would like to extend our well wishes and heartfelt hope that her recovery is swift and thorough.”

BBC News To Start Search For First Royal Editor Amid Soaring Audience Interest In Monarchy
Image
Exclusive: BBC News is gearing up to hire its first royal editor, with potential candidates emerging as the broadcaster looks to capitalize on soaring audience interest in the British monarchy.

BBC News has traditionally appointed royal correspondents, but the corporation has decided to elevate the role after Nicholas Witchell, a 25-year veteran of the beat, announced he will retire in 2024.

Insiders believe that it will be the first time in the corporation’s history it has installed a royal editor. Jean Seaton, the BBC’s official historian, was unaware of the broadcaster previously having the position.

Recruitment is expected to begin early next year, with the chosen candidate taking their place alongside household names including political editor Chris Mason and international editor Jeremy Bowen.

Speculation is already mounting over who may land the post, which will catapult a journalist into the heart of BBC coverage of key national moments including royal events and deaths.

The Prince and Princess of Wales — who visited St Thomas Church in Swansea in September last year — made sure to reach out and offer to replace food that was stolen.

Reverend Steven Bunting told ITV News’ Rhys Williams: “We opened up on Monday to move our food into our church where we give the food away and all the bags have been taken.

Adjoa Andoh’s Comment About ‘Terribly White’ Royal Family During King Charles’s Coronation Will Not Be Investigated by Media Regulator
Image
U.K. media regulator Ofcom has confirmed it will not investigate comments made by “Bridgerton’s” Adjoa Andoh during the coronation of King Charles III last month.

Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury in the Netflix hit and its spin-off “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” described the Royal Family’s appearance on Buckingham Palace balcony “as terribly white.”

“We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony,” she said, referring to the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, which included a performance from a gospel choir as well as representatives from all of Britain’s major faiths. After the ceremony, the royals made their customary appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to wave to the thousands of well-wishers below.

Andoh was among a number of commentators who were interviewed by anchors Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham during ITV’s broadcast of the coronation on May 6. Her comments attracted 8,371 complaints to Ofcom,...

Reid was joined by co-host Ben Shephard on Thursday morning’s (8 December) episode of Gmb on ITV.

King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla Parker-Bowles were almost hit when a protester threw eggs at them during an official royal visit to York.

The royal couple was on a walkabout through Micklegate Bar when a protester yelled out “this country was built on the blood of slaves,” and began throwing several eggs. The protestor, a 23-year-old student at the University of York, was arrested on the scene and remains in custody.

King Charles III didn’t exactly receive a warm welcome on Wednesday when he and Queen Consort Camilla arrived in York, England, for an official visit.

The 73-year-old British monarch was greeting crowds at Micklegate Bar, a royal entrance to the city, when a lone protestor attempted to throw eggs at him, narrowly missing.

David Beckham joined thousands of well-wishers queuing to say a final farewell to the Queen on Friday.

The soccer star told reporters and fans that he’d been in the line since around 2 a.m., and he was still there 12 hours later.

Like everyone else, Beckham waited hours and hours to pay his respects. He wore a dark flat cap, suit and tie for the occasion.

He looked emotional as he made his way to the Queen’s coffin at Westminster Hall.

Beckham told ITV that his grandparents would have been there in that line if they were alive today, so he was doing it on their behalf and that of his family.

Princes Harry and William Respond to Bombshell Investigation Into BBC Diana Interview: ‘Unethical Practices Took Her Life’
Image
Princes Harry and William have responded to the explosive findings of an independent inquiry into the BBC’s infamous 1995 Panorama interview with their mother, Princess Diana.

The investigation was centred on British journalist Martin Bashir and his use of forged bank documents to secure access to the princess in the now-iconic sit-down, in which Diana claimed there were “three of us in the marriage.” Bashir, who was serving as the corporation’s Religion Editor up until last week, abruptly stepped down from the corporation on May 14, citing poor health.

The findings of the investigation, carried out by retired judge Lord Dyson, revealed on Thursday that the BBC “fell short of the high standards of integrity and transparency which are its hallmark” and that the internal investigation at the time, led by former BBC director general Tony Hall, was “woefully ineffective.”

Reacting to the findings, Prince Harry said: “Our mother was...

Prince Philip’s Death: How The BBC & Other British Broadcasters Responded
Image
The death of a senior member of the royal family is always a huge event in British life, whatever your view on the monarchy. And nowhere is the significance of these moments perhaps better captured than on the BBC.

The public broadcaster has well-rehearsed procedures for reporting on royal deaths, and these protocols swung into action with the passing of Prince Philip. Just after midday on Friday, the BBC interrupted its usual output across TV and radio to bring audiences Buckingham Palace’s statement.

On BBC One, the UK’s most-watched television channel, an episode of daytime show Paramedics on Scene went dark. A black and white title card appeared on screen, with the words “News report.”

Presenter Martine Croxall then said: “We are interrupting our normal programs to bring you an important announcement. You’re watching BBC News from London. A short while ago, Buckingham Palace announced the death of His Royal Highness,...

British Media Caught by Surprise as U.S. Outlets Continue to Break Meghan and Harry News
Image
In one week, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s nuclear CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey became a global television event that toppled incendiary presenter Piers Morgan from “Good Morning Britain” and now leaves a sizeable question mark over Sharon Osbourne’s future as a co-host at “The Talk.”

But it’s the war of words being played out across the Atlantic that has prompted extensive pearl-clutching from British royal watchers puzzled by U.S. outlets controlling the narrative about the British royal family.

In the latest jaw-dropping development, Gayle King, a co-host on “CBS This Morning” and Winfrey’s Bff, revealed on March 16 that Prince Harry has been in touch with his father, Prince Charles, and brother, Prince William.

“The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive,” King declared live on TV. “No one in the royal family has talked to Meghan yet.”

To see a...

Piers Morgan Storms Off ‘Good Morning Britain’ After ‘Diabolical’ Meghan Markle Comments
Image
ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall has revealed that she completely believes Meghan Markle’s statements about her mental health, which is at odds with ITV presenter Piers Morgan’s views on the matter.

Outspoken presenter Morgan, co-host of ITV’s breakfast program “Good Morning Britain,” suggested that he did not believe Markle’s statements during the Monday edition of the show. During the interview, with Oprah Winfrey, Markle said she had felt suicidal at times while being a part of the Royal Family and didn’t receive the support she needed from them despite asking for it. “I don’t believe a word she says,” Morgan said on the show on Monday. “I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report.”

Morgan stormed off set on Tuesday, while “Good Morning Britain” was being broadcast live, after an altercation with weatherman Alex Beresford, who called Morgan’s behaviour “diabolical.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Interview: ‘Trash-a-thon,’ ‘Bomb,’ ‘Terrible State’ Among U.K. Reactions
Image
The U.K. woke up on Monday morning to news of the explosive Meghan Markle and Prince Harry interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired in the U.S. Sunday evening on CBS.

“I’m angry to the point of boiling over. I’m sickened by what I’ve just seen. This is a two-hour trash-a-thon of our monarchy and royal family,” said outspoken presenter Piers Morgan on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain.”

“They trash everybody,” Morgan added. “They basically make out everybody in the royal family is a white supremacist. I just don’t think that’s acceptable.”

During the interview, which hasn’t yet aired in the U.K., Markle revealed that she had felt suicidal, and that Harry had conveyed to her concerns by a family member about the skin color of their then unborn son Archie, while Harry said that he was hurt there was no support...

After he missed a few shots, his father pushed him forward and gave him an encouraging squeeze on the shoulders. Once he scored, he received a round of applause. Meghan Markle Admits Her Friends Warned That "the British Tabloids Will Destroy Your Life"
When Prince Harry took legal action against a number of UK tabloids recently, he claimed that these publications were guilty of bullying his wife Meghan Markle, stating that they had "vilified her almost daily," staging "a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year." He compared Meghan's treatment to that of his mother, Princess Diana, confessing that, "my fear is history repeating itself."

Now it turns out that Meghan's British friends saw this coming, and warned her a long time ago to seriously consider any kind of relationship with Harry. Talking to ITV's Tom Bradby during the documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, Meghan said, "When I first met my now husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy, but my British friends said to me, 'I'm sure he's great, but you shouldn't do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.'...

Prince Harry Addresses Rumors of a Rift Between Him and William: "Inevitably Stuff Happens"
There were a lot of revelations in the ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, but one of the most surprising was Harry's frank comments about his sometimes strained relationship with his brother, Prince William. When questioned by Tom Bradby about his relationship with William, Harry laughed before confessing, "Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it's under, inevitably stuff happens."

However, he continued, "Look, we're brothers, we'll always be brothers. We're certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him as I know he'll always be there for me."

Harry and Meghan Got Extremely Candid in Their Documentary: "It's Constant Management"
Image Source: Getty / Tim Rooke

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are a huge talking point right now, having shared some of their deepest emotions in a new ITV documentary about their recent tour of Southern Africa. In Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, we learned more about the pressures they face as one of the most famous royal couples in the world, but we also saw the happiness and pride they take in each other; their son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor; and their work for good causes. In fact, the documentary provided quite the insight into just how emotional the past year has been for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Those emotions became apparent in a series of candid interviews, which saw Harry and Meghan challenge the royal practice of keeping feelings behind palace doors. Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke about the impact they feel from the constant...

(Photo Credit: Getty Images) "Working on this project for the past nine months has been a tremendous labor of love. I just recently moved to London and I felt so immediately embraced by this kitchen — your warmth and kindness, and also to be able to be in this city and to see in this one small room how multicultural it was," Meghan said — without using notes! — in videos captured by ITV’s Chris Ship.
