Say his name, say his name… Rumpelstiltskin is back with a brand new update on the terrifying fairy tale, and the film was released on VOD outlets this past Tuesday.

Exclusive: Jasmeet Raina, the creator and star of Late Bloomer, will make his directing debut in the Crave comedy’s second season.

Production on Season 2 recently got underway in the greater Toronto region, starring Raina as Jasmeet Dutta, a Punjabi Sikh millennial and burgeoning online content creator trying to balance his ambitions for success with his commitment to his family, community and culture. It is inspired by Raina’s life.

Co-executive producer Peter Huang is back to direct six of the season’s eight episode, with Raina directing the other two and also executive-producing. Pier 21 is producing in association with Crave.

Starring alongside Raina are Baljinder Singh Atwal (Des Pardes) and Sandeep Bali as Jasmeet’s parents, Ashley Ganger (Grand Army) as his sister, Sugenja Sri (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Sachin Mahashi as his friends and Ahamed Weinberg (Insecure) as a cousin. Seher Khot (Sex/Life) also returns in an expanded role.

The film, written by Ashley Hargrove who also stars in the film as Linda – one half of the married couple at the centre of the film which follows Martin and Linda (Hargrove) who, while rebuilding a stale marriage, face an unexpected challenge when Martin is bitten by a vampire, leading them to test various vampire theories and protect their town from the undead.

Director Shawn C. Phillips is back with Desert Fiends, a new indie horror movie that’s packed with familiar faces and bloody carnage candy.

You can watch the official trailer for Desert Fiends below, which runs over 3-minutes long and plays out like a highlight reel of the old school practical effects you can expect in this one.

Fans of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes will probably want to check this one out, as well as anyone who has an affinity for practical gore effects and wild monster makeups.

Exclusive: Canadian comedy Run the Burbs has been picked up by Hulu for its second window in the U.S.

Fifth Season struck the deal with the streamer for the comedy from Kim’s Convenience star Andrew Phung, with the first two seasons set to drop on Hulu on New Year’s Eve, a few days before the third launches on Canada’s CBC.

Produced by Pier 21 Films, Run the Burbs stars Phung at the center of a Vietnamese/South Asian-Canadian family. He plays a stay-at-home dad with an entrepreneur wife and two kids, who each take a different approach to living life to the fullest in the suburbs, changing the way the audience thinks about family values and suburban life. Alongside Phung, the series stars a number of established and emerging comedians including YouTuber Julie Nolke, radio host Ali Hassan and Baroness von Sketch Show co-creator and star Aurora Browne.

Season 3 CBC and Pier 21 Films series from Andrew Phung and Scott Townend is in production around Toronto, Hamilton and Barrie. It follows a loving Vietnamese and Indian family, the Phams, in the suburbs and their oddball neighbors.

Phung stars in the ensemble comedy alongside the likes of Rakhee Morzaria, Zoriah Wong and Roman Pesino.

The new season will run to 13 episodes and launch in winter 2024 on CBC and streamer CBC Gem. It will include a now-annual Vietnamese Lunar New Year – Tết – episode and will once again include DJ and rapper Kardinall Offishall, in a role that has brought him a 2023 CSA nomination alongside Phung and Morzaria.

“Having the opportunity to showcase this family on television has been a dream come true,” said creators Phung and Townend. “It’s an absolute joy seeing the Phams grow from season to season.

From the outside, Canadian television is having a moment. Over the past 18 months, major streaming services — Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+, Disney+ and Apple TV+ — have established Northern presences via offices, execs or PR teams.

Canadian broadcasters are also stepping up. During upfronts and a series of meetings in Toronto last week, public broadcaster CBC boasted more than 4,000 hours of new programming. Bell Media confirmed an additional 210 hours of English and French-language original content, bolstering its original library to more than 1,000 hours. Corus Entertainment announced 25 new and returning series across its brands.

Even Rogers Sports & Media, which has historically commissioned fewer hours of originals than its competitors, confirmed original programming for the Omni channel and the return of “Canada’s Got Talent” and “Hudson & Rex” while announcing the upcoming “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent.”

According to Canadian producers however, getting a TV series off the ground in Canada is harder than ever.

Exclusive: Pier 21 Films, the Canadian production company behind series including Run The Burbs, which is airing on The CW in the U.S., has new bosses.

Vanessa Steinmetz and Nicole Butler have been named co-CEOs of the company as founder Laszlo Barna transitions to chair of the company.

The news was announced while the Canadian TV industry was gathered at the Banff Media Festival.

The company is also behind Late Bloomer, starring Jasmeet Raina and Indigenous comedy Don’t Even from showrunner Amber-Sekowan Daniels both for Canada’s Crave.

The duo now leads all creative and business activities for the company. Steinmetz, a former SVP of Production Finance at eOne, where she worked on series including The Rookie and Sharp Objects, oversees financing and business operations and Butler, former COO with Pier 21, leads development and production activities.

Canadian streaming service Crave has partnered with Pier 21 Films on eight-part series “Late Bloomer,” created by and starring Jasmeet Singh Raina, also known as Jus Reign.

The series is inspired by Raina’s life as a Punjabi Sikh millennial and online celebrity. The show follows burgeoning content creator Jasmeet Dutta as he tries to balance his ambitions for success with his commitment to his family, community and culture. Production is underway in Toronto and Hamilton.

As Jus Reign, Raina is a global social media star and was one of Much Digital Studios’ first content creators in 2015. Raina became known for his deadpan comedic style and commentary on race and pop culture and is part of a group of storytellers who charted the way for increased South Asian representation in mainstream media.

Gavin Crawford and Sharjil Rasool have joined the second season of Run the Burbs, the lighthearted CBC comedy whose sophomore season will be showrun and executive produced by The Office writer Anthony Q. Farrell.

Dakota Ray Hebert and Ann Pornel will guest star in the Pier 21 Films series created by Andrew Phung and Scott Townend as the Pham family universe expands. The second season cast will include regulars Phung as Andrew Pham, Rakhee Morzaria as Camille Pham, and Zoriah Wong and Roman Pesino as Khia and Leo Pham.

Other first season cast returning includes Ali Hassan, Julie Nolke, Jonathan Langdon, Chris Locke, Samantha Wan and Aurora Browne (Baroness von Sketch Show). The second season will debut on CBC and CBC Gem in winter 2023 as production gets underway on 13 new half-hour episodes.
