Netflix has acquired the spec script and aims to fast track Out There, a new high concept sci-fi thriller described as in the vein of A Quiet Place and Cloverfield, Deadline reports today.

Out There will mark the veteran editor Stefan Grube.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time, but the sci-fi thriller “revolves around a fractured family who must face the most catastrophic day of their lives.” Which does fall in line with the comparisons to A Quiet Place and Cloverfield. Considering Grube’s work on the suspenseful 10 Cloverfield Lane, we can likely expect that same level of breathless tension here.

Grube’s credits also include Tully, The Front Runner, and Star Wars: Episode IX. As for the spec script that was picked up by Netflix, that hails from Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke and Ian Levy. The Van Dykes previously wrote Don’t Worry Darling, and Levy scripted Pay the Ghost.

The Picture Company partners Alex Heineman & Andrew Rona will produce along with Josie Liang of Space Bandit. Nick Meyer of Sierra Pictures will serve as executive producer.

Grube hails from the world of post-production, having collaborated with directors Dan Trachtenberg, Jason Reitman and JJ Abrams. His editing credits include films such as 10 Cloverfield Lane, Tully, The Front Runner, and Star Wars: Episode IX. He has also crafted some of the better trailers of the past decade.

After weeks of behind the scenes drama that dominated the discourse, director Olivia Wilde‘s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was released into theaters over the weekend, and the 1950s-set movie dominated the box office in the #1 spot. The film, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, pulled in 19.2 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

Internationally, Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling added another 10.8 million to its total, with the film’s worldwide box office total now currently sitting pretty at 30 million.

The reported production budget for Don’t Worry Darling was 35 million, so it’s still got a ways to go before it recoups marketing costs and starts seeing some profits. The general rule of thumb is that a movie has to make 3x its production budget before ultimately becoming profitable, so Warner Bros. no doubt hopes this one eventually reaches 100 million.

The Florence Pugh and Harry Styles-starring psychological thriller premieres opposite Disney’s re-release of “Avatar” (2009), a few months before its sequel “The Way of Water” hits theaters. The David Bowie documentary “Moonage Daydream” expands wide after last week’s successful limited opening of 1.6 million. I never start a review commenting on whatever the so-called Film Twitter Mafia have to say about it, sight unseen. Starting back at CinemaCon in April when its directo/co-star Olivia Wilde was served legal papers onstage regarding her custody hearings with ex Jason Sudeikis, there has been non-stop gossip about her movie Don’t Worry Darling. There has been so much of it, right up to today’s Venice Film Festival press conference (covered by my colleague Nancy Tartaglione) that you almost have to address the elephant in the room. Others can do that, but let us not forget there is also a movie here, one I was able to preview as just that a few weeks ago in Burbank. As a reviewer, to quote Being There’s Chauncey Gardner, “I like to watch,” and that means only what is on the screen.

The first “Don’t Worry Darling” trailer made its debut at CinemaCon earlier this year, showing Pugh and Styles characters at game night, already madly in love with each other. But love may not be enough in this utopia they’ve entered. “Everyone is acting like I’m crazy. But I’m not crazy,” Pugh says. “I don’t trust him, and I don’t want to be here anymore.”

On Monday, Warner Bros. Pictures officially released the first full-length trailer for their upcoming psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling,” directed by Olivia Wilde who previously helmed “Booksmart.”

The film stars Florence Pugh as Alice, a housewife living with her husband Jack (Harry Styles), who’s employed by an enigmatic operation known as the Victory Project — which is expected to change the world as we know it.

Wilde directs from a screenplay penned by her “Booksmart” writer Katie Silberman, based on a story by Carey Van Dyke & Shane Van Dyke (“Chernobyl Diaries”) and Silberman. For Florence Pugh and Harry Styles in the first look at Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” trailer, it’s “always, you and me,” but while it may look romantic and steamy, there are secrets between the two of them that lurk just underneath the pristine surface.

Olivia Wilde’s film is a psychological thriller about a couple that chooses to live in a utopian experimental society, all set in the 1950s, but it slowly appears as though Styles and his bosses may be gaslighting her, asking wives to simply support their husbands in their new community and, above all, not to ask questions.

“Everyone is acting like I’m crazy. But I’m not crazy,” Pugh says in the trailer. “I don’t trust him, and I don’t want to be here anymore.”

Florence Pugh and Harry Styles brought some steam to the already scorching desert at CinemaCon on Tuesday, with Olivia Wilde debuting the first full trailer for her film “Don’t Worry Darling” during Warner Bros.’ presentation.

Wilde’s film is a psychological thriller set during the 1950s in an isolated, utopian community settled in the California desert in the hopes to “change the world.” Pugh plays a housewife to Styles as her husband, whose glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets. Wilde had previously only shown a brief teaser on her Instagram, but the CinemaCon crowd got the full first look before anyone else.

“Always, you and me,” Styles says to Pugh in the trailer, with the two even sharing a sex scene on a dining room table. “All of you wives, we men, we ask a lot, we ask strength, food at home, a house cleaned and discretion, among all else.

“Don’t Worry Darling,” a psychological thriller directed by Olivia Wilde and starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, is scheduled to open in theaters next fall. The film is slated for Sept. 23, 2022.

Don’t Worry Darling will receive a theatrical release. Already scheduled on the weekend of Sept. 23-25, 2022 is United Artists horror movie Dark Harvest and Dreamworks Animation and Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

Production on New Line’s “Don’t Worry Darling,” the second film directed by Olivia Wilde, was temporarily halted on Wednesday after a crew member tested positive for Covid-19, an individual with knowledge of the matter told TheWrap.

The positive result occurred as part of routine testing in compliance with industry rules for safe filming amid the ongoing pandemic that has killed more than 230,000 people.

The identity of the affected crew member has not been disclosed, but the individual and everyone in the production with whom that person came in contact are self-quarantining, and the film will halt production for 14 days. The film will resume production after quarantine ends in compliance with industry protocols.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, among those quarantining are main cast members Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, KiKi Layne, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll,and Wilde, who in addition to directing acts in a supporting role.

“Dunkirk” star Harry Styles has boarded the psychological thriller “Don’t Worry, Darling,” opposite Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Olivia Wilde.

Styles replaces Shia Labeouf, who has departed the project due to a scheduling conflict. Wilde is directing “Don’t Worry, Darling,” which is set in an isolated community in the California desert in the 1950s, from a screenplay by Katie Silberman.

The former One Direction boy band member has been tapped to replace Shia Labeouf in Olivia Wilde’s upcoming film for New Line “Don’t Worry Darling,” according to an individual familiar with the project. Labeouf was forced to exit the project because of a scheduling conflict.

Styles earned praise for his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winning film “Dunkirk” which followed British soldiers during the evacuation of Dunkirk during World War II.

Sony’s “Universe of Marvel Characters” is about to get a little bigger. And if Booksmart is any gauge, a little more delightful too. Multiple outlets report that Wilde has agreed to co-write and direct a new original female-led superhero property at Sony Pictures.

Deadline reports that the secret project is likely a Spider-Woman movie. The news, which Sony Pictures declined to comment on, also places Wilde on board as co-writer alongside writing partner Katie Silberman.

If accurate this is a major win for Sony Pictures and shows how Marvel properties continue to expand in big ways apart from Disney or Marvel Studios proper.
