While there aren't any horror releases by major studios this week, there is, however, one notable film that should make up for the drought we are having. It is a film that should be re-subtitled "Shock and Awe" as that was how our @Foywonder felt after viewing Birdemic: Shock and Terror.

Anyway, this avian midnight movie sensation is directed by James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore, Janae Caster, Colton Osborne, and Adam Sessa plus five seconds of stock footage of Tippi Hedren from a previous film.

This week also brings us Psych: 9 from Ghost House Underground. This film is directed by Andrew Shortell and produced by Gareth Jones; it stars Sara Foster, Cary Elwes, Michael Biehn, and Gabriel Man. Rounding out the list are a wacky concept that has warrior creatures battling it out for our amusement and a fusion ghost story.

After already being released to DVD earlier in 2009, it appears that the critically panned Ghost Month had a successful enough run on DVD that they are going to give this supernaturally charged horror film a Blu-Ray release on Febuary 22, 2011. 

Ghost Month stars Marina Resa, Shirley To, Akiko Shima and Rick Irvin and is from the director of Deathbed - Danny Draven. In it, Danny Draven takes the helm for this supernaturally driven shocker about an unassuming housekeeper drawn into a terrifying world of vengeful apparitions. According to the Chinese calendar, the seventh month of every year marks the time when the restless spirits of the dead break free from the gates of hell to mix among the mortals. During this time, specific rules must be followed to avoid falling prey to the spirits of the damned. When a solitude-seeking housekeeper arrives at the desert home of a superstitious Chinese woman and her devoutly religious aunt,...

Ghost Month is writer/director Danny Draven’s effort to make a subtle, suspenseful American film in the vein of your favorite Asian horror movies. The result, unfortunately, is that the attempted subtlety comes across as tedious and relatively predictable.

Alyssa (Marina Resa) works for a housekeeping agency and has been assigned to the estate of Ms. Wu (Shirley To), who lives far out in the desert. The young maid is trying to clear her head and get away from an abusive ex-boyfriend (Jerod Edington), so the seclusion and strict rules of the household seem to be a perfect fit. She is thrown off immediately, however, by the culture shock she endures while living with Ms. Wu and her Aunt Chen (Akiko Shima). Alyssa has arrived right at the start of “Ghost Month,” a traditional Chinese period where rituals, such as the burning of paper money, must be carried out...

The Asian-influenced American Indie, Ghost Month (previously featured in Fangoria #279) will be arriving on DVD July 21st via Dark World Pictures.

To celebrate the release, filmmaker Danny Draven (Deathbed) dropped Fango a line to let us know that he'll be appearing along with much of his cast and crew at a special signing event at Burbank horror staple, Dark Delicacies.

"In a bid to escape her nutso ex-boyfriend, Jacob, Alyssa (Marina Resa) takes a housekeeping gig at a remote Southwestern home. But her retreat coincides with the Chinese calendar's seventh month, when dead souls allegedly raise hell among the mortal world. Skeptical Alyssa isn't convinced by the warnings of her Chinese employers (Shirley To and Akiko Shima) until she starts having nightmarish visions in this creepy horror extravaganza."
