Global anime streamer Crunchyroll is exploring the idea of shorter anime projects to suit the preferences of younger generations for short-form content, such as that seen on TikTok, according to a new interview.

Nikkei Xtrend interviewed Crunchyroll COO Gita Rebbapragada and President Rahul Purini about the latest trends concerning the anime industry. When the pair were asked how they believe anime will evolve in the future, Purini replied, "Most anime are 21-24 minutes long. Meanwhile, younger generations are used to watching short 2-4 minute videos one after the other (on TikTok etc.). We need to think about how to tell anime stories differently than we traditionally have done. The anime ecosystem itself needs to continue to evolve."

A new interview with veteran animator Shinsaku Kozuma has revealed that Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki once segregated animators in the workspace based on blood type.

In an interview with animation blog Full Frontal, Kozuma recounted his long career, from working on Yu Yu Hakusho to multiple Final Fantasy titles, and even the latest season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Among his many anecdotes was a time he worked at Studio Ghibli with Hayao Miyazaki, revealing that in addition to levying high fines for lateness, the acclaimed director believed the superstition that blood types determined personalities. Shinkai detailed his sadness and sympathy with Itou's victims after the producer was arrested on suspicion of violating the Child Prostitution Act this week. Anime producer Kazumasa Narita has defended Hideaki Anno, the creator of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, against allegations of abusive and violent behavior.

Narita spoke to ITMedia News about his experiences working on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (Shin Eva), in which he remarked on accusations that Anno was irrational, controlling on set, and did things like flipping tables over in anger. The Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association, or Nafca, recently published its findings from a survey of over 300 animators working in the industry in Japan, and the results on their annual pay and working conditions have proven distressing.

Nafca revealed that 40% of the 311 animators surveyed made a yearly income of under 2.4 million yen -- less than US$16,000. This rose to 50% for animators in their 20s and 30s. In addition, 68.7% of respondents worked eight hours a day or more, with over a quarter working over 10 hours or more. Nafca noted little reduction in working hours even for animators aged 50 and over, posing serious health risks. Additionally, with older animators unable to take any time off to train the younger generation, this has contributed to the skill gap that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 chief animation director Terumi Nishii, a key Nafca supporter, has been calling for the industry to correct.
