Christopher Nolan has been criticized for shooting elements of Universal’s all-star epic The Odyssey in Morocco-occupied Western Sahara.

Earlier this month, the British director filmed for four days near the coastal city of Dakhla, which is part of a region that the United Nations has designated as a “non‑self‑governing territory” since 1963.

Western Sahara, which has become a magnet for big-budget shoots like the Prime Video series The Wheel of Time, is not legally part of Morocco, but the U.S. and UK are among Western governments to recently endorse the North African nation’s claim over the land.

The Western Sahara International Film Festival (FiSahara), which takes place in the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria, called on Nolan to urgently halt shooting in the region. Universal has been contacted for comment.

Christopher Nolan's first film since the award-winning Oppenheimer will be a take on Homer's famous work, The Odyssey. The film will, of course, feature a star-studded cast.

The Odyssey brings back several frequent collaborators of the Oscar-winning filmmaker, as well as welcoming some new ones to the mix. One of the new ones is McU's Tom Holland, who is rumored to portray Telemachus, the son of the film's main protagonist, Matt Damon's Odysseus. In a new interview with GQ Magazine, Tom Holland had nothing but praise for The Odyssey, as well as the extraordinary experience he's had on the set working with Nolan.

Filming for The Odyssey began in mid-February this year, and it's still ongoing. However, it looks like Holland ended its scenes. The actor highlighted that the project was "the job of a lifetime," and revealed that he had "the best experience" on a film set.

Nolan's upcoming mythic action epic, The Odyssey, has since greatly expanded its cast with a plethora of stars, including John Wick's John Leguizamo joining the eagerly anticipated film. It is as large an undertaking as any Nolan has ever ventured into in his illustrious career. With huge expectations, some of Hollywood's brightest stars on the call sheet, and most definitely an enormous budget. Leguizamo reveals that Nolan still manages to make the entire production feel like an independent film.

The film explores a pair of detectives tracking a brutal serial killer and is planned as the intro into multiple features set in a crime-ridden world suffering from a hidden vampire epidemic.

Gilliam and O’Hara are both attached for the feature, which is aiming to shoot this year.

Universal has unveiled a first look of Matt Damon playing the lead in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey.

The side-angle shot shows Damon, who worked with Nolan in Oppenheimer, clad in military armor. An X post unveiling the image reiterated the movie’s July 17 2026 release date.

Just before Christmas, it was revealed that Nolan’s latest project would be the adaptation of Homer’s epic poem composed around the 8th century Bce. As one of the foundational poetic texts of Western literature, the story follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca on his dangerous journey home after the Trojan war. The ancient Greek epic illustrates a true hero’s journey as the titular figure faces Polyphemus the Cyclops, Sirens, the nymph Calypso and the witch goddess Circe in the treacherous oceans that separate him from his island home and wife Penelope.

Christopher Nolan, much like many filmmakers, has a series of actors he collaborates with frequently. His upcoming movie, The Odyssey, has a star-studded cast that reunites him with Matt Damon.

Universal Pictures has revealed the first look at Matt Damon as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming telling of The Odyssey.

Set to hit theaters on July 17th, 2026, the film will also reportedly star Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Himesh Patel, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, and Will Yun Lee. Other than Damon as Odysseus, details on other specific roles remain under wraps.

Filming on The Odyssey reportedly began in February, and will include on-site shooting throughout the Aeolian Islands in Sicily, Italy, including on the island of Favignana, which Odysseus and his men are believed to have visited.

The Odyssey marks Nolan’s first film since Oppenheimer, for which he won Best Picture and Best Director at the 2024 Academy Awards.

Diane Warren wrote the song for the film about Richard Montañez, the Frito-Lay janitor who became an executive after inventing Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

Ahead of the ceremony at the Dolby Theater, Longoria talked about the excitement her directorial debut getting some recognition at the Academy Awards.

“I have goosebumps. I can’t believe it. I can because Diane Warren wrote the song, so she’s a genius and Becky G is a genius,” Longoria told Laverne Cox on Live from E! red carpet coverage. “Their performance tonight… You will never be more proud to be a Latino and a Chicano, but Becky’s thought and love that she put into this performance tonight is going to blow everybody away. She has some special guest from Inglewood.”

She continued, “We don’t ever get this platform.
