The Best Horror Movies Streaming This Month Are Christmas Horror Movies (December 2024)
Image
It's the holiday season, which can mean only one thing: it's time to watch Christmas horror movies! Christmas horror is nothing new. In the Victorian era, folks would gather by the fireside around Christmas time to tell each other ghost stories (this is how we got "A Christmas Carol"). Over the years, the horror genre has embraced this idea by unleashing horror films set on or around Christmas. Some of these films are quite bad and seem to recycle the same boring idea ("What if a guy dressed as Santa Claus killed people?!") over and over again. But there are others that make the yuletide bright. Hell, even some of the killer Santa stories work. As the weird year that was 2024 comes to a close, and the horrifying uncertainty of 2025 lurks right around the corner, let's chug some mulled wine, deck the halls, and watch the following Christmas-centric horror movies.

11 Cat & Mouse Horror Films You Should Watch
Image
It’s the official season of the macabre and the weird , folks. Therefore, people are scrambling to assemble their watch lists for Halloween because some people like to stay in. And sure, I think watching Halloween (1978) every year as a tradition is a great way to spend the holiday. I also think that trying something new is great too, and that means a specific set of recommendations. What exactly? Cat and mouse horror movies.

Cat and mouse is one of those heart pounding subgenres in horror. Watching people be relentlessly pursued and have to hide from a threat is terrifying. And that’s more specifically if it’s executed properly. Adding one of the following films to your watchlist might make for a bloody good time. So kick back and get ready because these cat and mouse horror films are stressful (in the best way).

Also, have a safe and...

‘Inside: Limited Edition’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Béatrice Dalle, Alysson Paradis, Jean-Baptiste Tabourin, Nathalie Roussel, François-Régis Marchasson | Written and Directed by Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury

I remember always enjoying Inside, and first saw it not long after its initial release. It was brutal, gory and set on Christmas Eve. Therefore, a ‘Christmas’ movie that, for a while, got watched every holiday period. But, with my ever-expanded collection of Christmas movies, and not enough time to watch them, it had been several years since I had seen the film. So, Second Sight’s Limited Edition Blu-ray release has come at just the right time!

If someone asked me if home invasion horror movies were a particular favourite of mine, my initial reaction would be no. But two of my favourite movies are Inside and The Strangers. Two movies that do lots of different things with that subgenre but that are equally as effective. Inside is the one...

Heard also claimed that Depp hit her with a cell phone and pulled her hair last Saturday night - submitting a recent photo of herself with what appears to be a bruise on her right eye as evidence. The Definitive Foreign Language Horror Films: 40-31
Horror is really the only genre that has entries that, while “good,” may not necessarily mean “recommended.” So, how does that affect what is “definitive?” A recent conversation brought up the nightmare of a movie A Serbian Film (great review here from Justine) which, by all accounts, is a horror film. But, while everyone in film circles knows about the film (many have even seen it), I can’t imagine anyone actually recommending it. It’s made impact, sure. But at what cost? The best horror films aren’t simply there to scare and disgust viewers. They’re there to serve as metaphors for other issues, however big or small. But the best ones are those that do it in a way that, while still may scare and disgust you, will also make you think and reevaluate your situation.

We could go on forever with the list of honorable mentions in this category. Films like The Desperate Hours, Kidnapped and High Tension (Haute Tension) come immediately to mind. As do Panic Room, You're Next, The Purge, The Aggression Scale and Funny Games. Hell, even Macaulay Culkin got terrorized by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci in Home Alone. Some on the list are traditional assaults and some are more unique, but we think we've got it narrowed down to...

‘Inside’ – bloody, gory, chock full of suspense – the perfect Holiday treat
Inside (À l’intérieur)

Directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury

Written by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury

2007, France

Inside (À l’intérieur) takes the home invasion genre about as far as it can go with an exceedingly simple premise. Four months after the death of her husband, Sarah (Alysson Paradis), who is nine months pregnant, is tormented by a strange woman (Beatrice Dalle) lurking outside her house on Christmas Eve. After a few unsuccessful attempts at trying to talk her way in, the mysterious woman invades Sarah’s home with the intent on killing her. The twist here however, is the intruder first plans to perform an botched C-section with a giant pair of scissors so she can take Sarah’s baby for herself.

This movie is not recommended for women on the brink of motherhood. Inside is one of the most vicious and cringe inducing horror thrillers ever made.

31 Days of Horror: 100 Greatest Horror Films: Top 100
Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Come Back Tonight To See My List Of The 200 Best!

Feature: Heather’s Favorite Modern Home Invasion Movies
Growing up on films like When a Stranger Calls, Black Christmas, The Last House on the Left (which I saw waaaay too young) and even to a degree, Dial M for Murder, I’ve always found home invasion stories to be highly effective.

After all, what’s more terrifying than the idea of someone breaking into your home or sanctuary, the one place you should feel the safest? Nothing hits harder than that idea, which is why these types of horror movies have always resonated with me over the years. It’s time to lock the doors, check the windows, and take a look back at my five favorite modern home invasion movies since 2000.

The Aggression Scale- Even though it only came out last year, that doesn’t mean that Steven C. Miller’s truly badass Home Alone meets Rambo mash-up, The Aggression Scale, isn’t worthy of a spot.

Okay, so not all the moms on this list are psychotic killers; some are heroes, and some fall somewhere in between. But they're all great for their own reasons. As usual, we'll start out with some honorable mentions, and we certainly have some remarkable moms to speak about. We'll start with Estelle Collingwood (played by Cynthia Carr) in the original Last House on the Left. Only a mother's love could drive a person to bite a guy's Johnson off as an act of revenge! Another great justice-seeking mother was Kate (played by Vera Farmiga) in Orphan.

'Inside' an Extreme Horror Movie
Many people claim to love horror movies. A lot of them enjoy the idea of being scared, while others dig on scary monsters and of course there are the gore fans.

We'd say that the 2007 French film 'Inside' (review here) surpasses many of those "safe" boundaries for horror movie enjoyment. Every so often a brutal film such as 'Inside' comes along and really reaches deep into the soul of its viewer and yanks at some rather dark psychological issues.

If you've seen the film you already know what we're talking about. For those who haven't and really want to dip your toe into the brutal extreme horror film genre, you'll definitely want to check this flick out. But don't say we didn't warn you, because it's not for the faint of heart.

'Inside' Synopsis:

Inside (À l'intérieur) is a 2007 French horror film directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, starring Alysson Paradis and Béatrice Dalle.

Le Greenboy French Super-Normal Bio-Hero Concept Trailer
Here's a fun little concept trailer for a French super-hero film based on a character created called Le Greenboy. The film was written, directed & produced by French filmmaker Jerome Genevray. The trailer was made on very little money, but they hope to turn it into a full length feature film. The movie stars Alysson Paradis who is the sister of the wife of Johnny Depp, Diane Dassigny and Aurélien Jégou as Le GreenBoy.

The story follows La GreenBoy, a super-normal-bio-hero who is on a mission in Paris struggling to keep the city clean of peoples trash. His mortal enemy is DirtyGirl, who is involved with the oil industry.

The production quality is really good, but the quality of the story has yet to be seen. I can definitely see the potential. Check out the concept trailer below and let us know what you think!

Thanks to Jerome Genevray for the heads up on his film!

Unhinged|| Movie Review: À L’ INTÉRIEUR (Inside)
I like French films. I do. But I hate French horror. It is oftentimes too contrived with plots that attempt political commentary but never succeed in making an actual point. Frontier(s) has weird Nazi overtones that are never quite developed and an irritating mimicking quality (see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). High Tension is one of only two movies that made me yell “Bullshit!” aloud in the theater. (Seriously, have you seen that ending?) And then, of course, Them was just average. And for me, “just average” is simply not enough.

It was because of this recent French horror history that I wasn’t all too interested in Inside. I thought, “Meh, who cares?” Then I read a little bit about it online. It was being talked about like it was the most terrifying thing to hit the streets since The Shining (yes, I still find that scary). So I put it in my queue,...

The M/C Decade List: #50 - #41: Forgotten fantasy, fractured time, and Will Ferrell
For a full description of the purpose and the parameters of this list, read the introduction. All lists must start somewhere, and after sorting through almost 1000 titles, I ended up with 260 serious finalists.  Those finalists were weighed, considered, and finally boiled down to only 50 titles, with no ties and no cheating.  And the first title on that list is... #50 / "À l'intérieur" aka "Inside" Yep.  I'm starting the countdown with an unapologetic horror film, one of the most upsetting I've seen in my 30-or-so years as a bloodthirsty horror fan.  A pregnant woman (Alysson Paradis) and her...

Gene therapy leads to bad headaches in The Way Beyond
Somehow, I missed this film when it played this past August in Montreal. It sounds like an Outer Limits episode and plays like a fantastic looking arthouse scifi film via the trailer.

Synopsis:

Jonathan Vogel (Guillaume Depardieu) would like to turn back the clock and undo the accident that led to his disability and destroyed his life. When he learns that Stivlas Karr (Carlo Brandt), a well-known professor and geneticist, has developed a gene therapy for regenerating the human body, he makes an appointment with him for some clinical tests. But the therapy doesnt go according to Professor Karrs plan and leads to unexpected results. Jonathan, whose life is now in danger, has become aware that there is only one person who can help him: Alice (Alysson Paradis), the professors daughter.

Trailer with English subs after the break.

After a few years’ absence, the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards are back in their original format, giving you the chance to vote for the best genre films, filmmakers and actors from the past year. There was such a bumper crop of good stuff released in 2008 that narrowing down the nominees to five in certain categories was truly tough; a couple of movies (most notably Splinter) will wait till next year when they’ve gotten more DVD exposure.

Inside (DVD Review)
Four months prior to Christmas, Sarah (Alysson Paradis) and Matthieu Scar Angelo (Jean-Baptiste Tabourin) fall victim to a horrific car accident. Matthiew doesn’t make it, but Sarah and her still unborn child survive. Fast forward to Christmas Eve and Sarah rests at home, anticipating the birth of her child, which is scheduled for the following (Christmas) day. Still extremely distraught, Sarah’s psyche is in shambles. Plagued by terribly vivid nightmares, Sarah’s troubles escalate when a strange woman (Beatrice Dalle) suddenly knocks on her door. Mental instabilities quickly become the least of Sarah’s problems this Christmas Eve, as this stranger is anything but friendly, and she want’s Sarah’s baby... badly. An unsettling battle unfolds as Sarah tries desperately to keep her attacker at bay. There’s nothing pleasant (and believe me, I mean that as a huge compliment) about this film. Writer/Director Alexandre Bustillo paint’s a grisly,...

Inside DVD Movie Review
Title: Inside (2007) Starring Alysson Paradis and Beatrice Dalle Produced by La Fabrique de Films, Br Films and Canal+ Written by Alexandre Bustillo Directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury Score: Technical: 100, Story: 90, Acting: 95, Overall Score: 95 I always look forward to see upcoming horror movies. Inside was no exception. However, I quickly realized that Inside wasn’t like normal horror films and as the film went on I was proven right. It has officially happened…I found a movie that repulsed me to no end. Sarah (Alysson Paradis) and her husband, Matthieu (Jean-Baptiste Tabourin), get into a horrific car accident in the beginning of the film, leaving Matthieu dead and Sarah (and her unborn baby) seriously injured. Four months later, mom and baby are in [...]...

Inside
Béatrice Dalle and Alysson Paradis in Inside (2007)
Dimension Films

As is the case with certain amusement park rides, pregnant women are well advised to avoid Inside, the latest example of over-the-top French cinematic horror.

This claustrophobic shocker co-directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (both surely destined for Hollywood careers) would certainly do well here with the "Saw" crowd were it not for those pesky subtitles. Recently showcased at Lincoln Center's Film Comment Selects series, Inside is set to be released this year on DVD.

Running a compact 83 minutes, the simple story line centers on Sarah (Alysson Paradis), a pregnant young woman spending Christmas Eve alone with her cat before going to the hospital the next day for a cesarean section. Having lost her husband in a car crash several months earlier -- the film helpfully shows us repeated images of the fetus being bounced around the walls of her womb -- Sarah turns down the offers of company from her mother and solicitous boss.

That turns out to be a mistake, as her home is soon invaded by a mysterious figure (Beatrice Dalle) identified in the credits only as "the woman," who is determined to perform a premature and rather cruder version of the operation in order to get the baby for herself. A lengthy cat-and-mouse game follows, with the intruder -- armed with such weapons as a nasty pair of scissors and knitting needles -- proceeding to terrify Sarah even while dispatching several visitors, including a pair of hapless cops, who attempt to intervene.

The filmmakers pile on the gore in relentless fashion, no doubt exhausting the French supply of whatever substance passes for blood these days. It would all be laughable if it wasn't also so damn effective, with the expert photography and editing providing a nonstop barrage of visceral shocks.

Sadistically tapping into elemental female fears, Inside is strictly for those who like their horror on the extreme side.

Weinsteins make their 'Inside' move
Alexandre Bustillo
The Weinstein Co. were first out of the gate in Berlin, acquiring French thriller "Inside" from Celluloid Dreams in the first major domestic acquisition of this year's European Film Market.

The Weinstein Co. picked up rights for all English-speaking territories for "Inside", directed by first-timers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury.

The feature, which stars Beatrice Dalle, Alysson Paradis and Nathalie Roussel is the story of a pregnant woman who loses her boyfriend in a car crash. She is then haunted by a mysterious, and violent, woman.

The Weinstein's grabbed "Inside" Saturday night in Berlin.

Weinstein Co. acquisitions executives Maeva Gatineau and Michelle Krumm negotiated the deal with Hengameh Panahi and Charlotte Mickie of Celluloid Dreams.

"We are thrilled to be in business again with Celluloid and such a talented team of filmmakers," Krumm said.

Maury and Bustillo said the Weinsteins were ideal for the film because they are "true believers in the genre and we are real fans of the horror films they have produced -- we couldn't be in better company."

Celluloid is coming off a red-hot Sundance, where the company inked some of that festival's biggest deals, selling comedy "Son of Rambow" to Paramount Vantage for $7 million and step-dancing picture "How She Move" to Vantage and MTV Films for $3 million.
