Sitges 2010: 8th Wonderland Review
Now here is a 2008 French science fiction satire that seems to have eluded the Twitch crowd, and outside of a fairly limited festival run outside of Europe (winning a number of prizes in the 2009 edition of Fantasia), remains surprisingly unseen. Heck, even inside Europe it has not penetrated too far, as it is just finding a Spanish premiere nearly two and a half years after the films Market debut at Cannes. It is ironic that a film about getting media traction fails to get any sort of traction with its own core audience. Do not let the long shelf life fool you though, this is savvy, dense filmmaking that should become a bit of a cult item when it is inevitably discovered years down the road. Any film that can coherently go from the kidnapping and hostage video footage of a turkey (the bird, not the country) to the acknowledgement...

Sci-fi London 2010: Review of 8th Wonderland
Year: 2008

Directors: Nicolas Alberny & Jean Mach

Writers: Nicolas Alberny & Jean Mach

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Ben Austwick

Rating: 5 out of 10

A brave attempt to convey an internet-driven revolution filmed on a shoestring budget, 8th Wonderland is an ambitious film that looks at the effect of technological change on society through the use of some unusual techniques. Unfortunately it falls well short of what it wants to be, hampered by a small budget but also its mercurial subject matter.

8th Wonderland is an internet community that aims to become the first online country, asserting itself on the world stage by organising pranks such as putting condom machines in the Vatican, before moving on to organising demonstrations and strikes. As the media begins to take notice this budding internet state gets more aggressive, its members voting to commit acts of terrorist violence, and the responsibilities of power dawn on its idealistic members.

Release date set for 8th Wonderland
We've been tracking new on Nicolas Alberny's upcoming movie 8th Wonderland for some time, and it good to see the film has finally been giving a release date. It’s quite hard to peg exactly what exactly 8th Wonderland is; Drama, futuristic thriller, science fiction or soon perhaps science fact? With recent events in the UK, where the online world has unexpectedly changed the course of almost certain events through popular action, it could make you wonder…..hmmm what if. 8th Wonderland opens in France April 7th 2010. Synopsis: Millions of people scattered throughout the world are disappointed with the way it evolves & decide to unite to improve things. Through the Internet they create the first virtual nation, 8th Wonderland, a starting point of their resistance. Their common goal: the desire to no longer suffer the television news without being able to react. Every individual has a chance to be heard.

Fantasia Film Festival Unveils 2009 Line-Up
Fantasia [1] is one of the largest (if not the largest) genre film festival in North America. It takes place every summer in Montreal, Canada, and features all kinds of horror, sci-fi, and action films from all over the world, often with an emphasis on Asian cinema. This year is no different, with two of the biggest films being Takashi Miikie's Yatterman and Chan-wook Park's Thirst. Other fairly high profile selections include Michael Dougherty's long-delayed Trick'r'Treat, Uwe Boll's Stoic and Jaume Collet-Serra's Orphan. This year's festival takes place between July 9th and 29th. The full program schedule will be available online by the end of the week. Check out an extensive list of titles playing after the jump. Yatterman (Dir. Takashi Miike) The Eclipse (Dir. David Morley) Possibility of An Island (Dir. Michel Houellebecq) Thirst (Dir. Chan-wook Park) Trick'r'Treat (Dir. Michael Dougherty) Neighbor (Dir. What to see at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival pt.1
Fantasia Festival is North America [1]'s premiere (and largest) genre [2] film [3] festival [4]. It is also my favorite film festival and so I could not wait to share the highlights of this years line up. Here is a sneak peek at what we will be reviewing in the upcoming week of our podcast. Crush And Blush - Canadian Premiere South Korea Dir: Lee Kyoung-mi For her first feature, director Lee Kyoung-mi had some high-calibre assistance. Park Chan-wook produced, co-wrote and appears briefly in the film, as does Bong Joon-ho, director of The Host. This vaudevillian comedy doused in dark humour follows an unpopular woman who deviously schemes to seduce a colleague and keep him away from his mistress. Hong Hyo-jin seems born to play the fascinating and hard-to-follow Me-sook, an unforgettable, engaging and well-developed character. Love Exposure - Canadian Premiere Japan Dir: Sion Sono Prepare to witness miracles because Sion Sono (Suicide Club,...

Fantasia film fest 2009 lineup lookin' lovely!
Ok, so I'm lazy.. I copy and pasted the press release, which is after the break, and we have reviews of quite a few of the films playing, including White Lightnin', Left Bank, Blood River, Cryptic, Deadgirl, The Horsemen, I Sell the Dead.. with Kaifeck Murder coming soon (once I can figure out what to write).

Movies I'm really interested in seeing: French Pa flick Mutants, Smash Cut, Possibility of an Island, Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, and Thirst.

But alas, I won't be there. Instead, a friend of ours will be providing some reviews for the week he is there, so everyone give a big thanks to DirtyRobot! Woop!

Check out the film greatness after the break! Oh, and there's more to come...

The past 12 months have been a treasure trove for sharp, individualistic visions of the unusual. Keep your hands on the bars as we give you a...
