Biopics are really having a moment right now. While the genre itself is nothing new, biopics seem like an easy way not only to make a lot of money at the box office but to bring home a bunch of trophies during awards season. If you're lucky and/or have the right director at the helm, you can achieve both like with 2023's "Oppenheimer," which grossed close to $1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time and took home Best Picture at that year's Academy Awards.
It feels like Hollywood isn't going to let go of this trend anytime soon, and for notable figures who become the subjects of these movies, it's often a chance to have their accomplishments shared with a vast audience. But even if a biopic is largely complimentary, some people just don't like seeing their dirty laundry aired for the world to see.

Actress Antonique Smith and activist Rev Yearwood have teamed up to launch Climate Revival, a new nonprofit using the power of music and celebrity to mobilize faith communities and people of color to get out the climate vote, both in the 2024 election and beyond.
The duo will host special event “Climate Revival: Live” in Washington, D.C., on Friday to kick off the initiative, featuring appearances from Leslie Odom Jr., filmmaker Maya Penn and Rep. Justin J. Pearson.
Smith — who has appeared in Rent on Broadway as well as onscreen in Luke Cage and 2009’s Notorious — will serve as CEO of Climate Revival, and has been a part of the climate movement for the last decade after seeing how her community was being affected. The first series in the franchise to have an African-American and a woman as its marquee player, NatGeo’s Genius: Aretha is, like the title of its opening episode and the Queen of Soul herself, all about “Respect.”
Penned by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks, the pandemic-delayed premiere picks up with the Cynthia Erivo-portrayed Aretha Franklin performing a rousing rendition of “Chain of Fools” at triumphant 1967 show in Chicago before shifting the action to 1954 and the dangerous routes of rural Alabama. With threats and violence in the Jim Crow mists, we meet the pre-superstar Little Re (Shaian Jordan) and her preacher father Cl Franklin (Courtney B. Vance) with a flat tire and two racists breathing down their sweaty necks.

Everyone wants concerts to come back. Everyone who attended the premiere event for Nat Geo’s “Genius: Aretha” at the makeshift drive-in in the Rose Bowl parking lot Thursday had a more specific wish: that Cynthia Erivo concerts would come back. Never mind that that really hasn’t much of a thing up till now, with Erivo being too busy with acting gigs to tour. The premiere screening was followed by a taped performance by Erivo, filmed last weekend nearby in an empty Greek Theatre, that made it clear the road and audiences along it will be ready whenever she is.
The end of Erivo’s 20-minute performance met with considerable honking from a car-bound crowd that couldn’t help but momentarily forego the Rose Bowl setting’s rules about laying off the horn. The mini-concert, first revealed in a “Just for Variety” preview, had Erivo arriving on the Greek...

Netflix unveiled a brand image spot during Sunday’s Bet Awards telecast that highlights black artists who work for the streaming giant.
The spot dubbed “A Great Day in Hollywood” was inspired by the famed 1958 photograph “A Great Day in Harlem” featuring 57 jazz legends — including Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and Count Basie — on the stairs of New York brownstone snapped by photographer Art Kane.
The Netflix spot from director Lacey Duke features 47 black writers, showrunners, actors, and producers. The plan for the spot and the image campaign stemmed from Netflix’s Strong Black Lead initiative designed to foster an “ongoing, intentional focus to talk authentically with the black audience.” A photo similar to “Great Day in Harlem” was taken earlier this month by photographer Kwaku Alston to commemorate the gathering.

Social media reigns supreme! Or at least it does when it comes to the 2015 Grammy nomination announcements. All day long, a constant stream of contenders have been posted to the official Grammy Twitter account. More so than ever this year, the social media savvy singers and bands separated from the pack. While some iconic stars remained strangely mum — not a peep as of this writing from Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, or Beyonce on either Twitter or Instagram — others dove right in. Anyone can write a sincere “Thank you!!!1!” but a few went above and beyond. Whether hashtagging their hearts out, using emojis, or just a fun turn of phrase, these nominees showed off their personalities…which means they’ve already won the award for Social Media Navigation. Shout It Out: Mahoney’s Debut an Uneasy Mix of Style Over Substance
It’s not quite accurate to call Victoria Mahoney’s directorial and screenwriting debut, Yelling to the Sky, a failed effort, but its attempts to relate the rough and tumble adolescence of a young girl’s life in a mixed race Queens household feel overly familiar and not quite fully realized. However, Mahoney’s nascent talents as a director are frequently on display here, though her stylish flourishes would have perhaps been more at home on something that wasn’t a semi-autobiographical treatment of a subject, that, because of its casting and narrative similarities, will be unfavorably compared to 2009’s more compelling and divisive Precious.
Set in an almost indistinguishable time period in Queens, Sweetness O’Hara (Zoe Kravitz) and her older sister, Ola (Antonique Smith) depend on each other, combating other violently inclined teenagers from surrounding neighborhoods,...

During last night's Hollywood party for the Blu-ray and DVD release of X-Men: First Class, I got to speak with young actor Denzel Whitaker on the red carpet. Denzel Whitaker stars in the upcoming thriller Abduction, portraying Gilly, the best friend of Taylor Lautner's main character, Nathan. Here's what he had to say about Abduction on the red carpet.
"Gilly is Taylor Lautner's character's best friend in the film. Taylor's character, Nathan, sort of gets into some trouble, where he sees his picture on a missing persons website. That sort of spawns the whole action throughout the movie. Basically, my character is the one dude he can trust, his best friend, he knows he's not going to turn on him."
I told him that when I first heard about the movie, that I had this thought in my head that he Nathan was kidnapped at birth by who he thinks are his parents.

We couldn't be bigger fans of the movie Young Guns, specifically the character Dirty Steve. So when we get a chance to chat with actor Dermot Mulroney, we jump on it.
Dermot Mulroney stars in the new comedy The Family Tree, which hits theaters this Friday, August 26th. While chatting with the guy, whom we love, about his role as a father going through a midlife crisis, we couldn't help but go back to Dirty Steve and his past exploits. As it turns out, Dermot Mulroney would love to see the character return in a spin-off called Young Guns: The Ghost of Dirty Steve.
"All the kids that were watching Young Guns when they were fourteen or fifteen, right when it came out, and everyone got VCRs? They watched it over and over again. You know what happened to them? They all grew up and got jobs. Now, when we talk,...

The Good Life single looks back to the early days of hip-hop while staying firmly planted in the present.
By Rob Markman
Nas

There's no R&B chord, A-list feature or catchy chorus. On "Nasty," the first single from Nas' 10th solo album, The Good Life, the rapper takes things back to hip-hop basics: hard rhymes over an infectious loop.
The song, which leaked online Monday night, is reminiscent of New York's 1980s infamous park jams and starts out with a DJ asking the rapper's native Queensbridge housing projects, "Are y'all ready to see Nasty Nas?" The question is, of course, rhetorical.
After Nasir pushed rap's envelope in 2008 on his politically charged Untitled album (originally titled N---er), fans have clamored for new solo material. Thankfully, "Nasty" lives up to its name, as the track's opening bars paint a picture of New York's pre-gentrified crack era:...

The Abduction Movie Trailer has premiered. John Singleton‘s Abduction (2011) stars Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, and Jason Isaacs. Abduction‘s plot synopsis: “A thriller centered on a young man named Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.” They sure did give away many of the plot points in the first movie trailer for Abduction. They showed key people dying in this first trailer for Abduction but they certainly didn’t go down without a fight. I really hope they explain how all of those “skills” suddenly turn on in Nathan. Seems a little strange. In the Bourne Identity its explained. Let’s hope they do the same in Abduction and that Nathan doesn’t have amnesia. That would be lame if this film turns out to be Jason Bourne in high school.

Director: Victoria Mahoney Writer: Victoria Mahoney Starring: Zoë Kravitz, Antonique Smith, Jason Clarke, Yolanda Ross Yelling to the Sky is the story of Sweetness (Zoë Kravitz), the adolescent daughter of a Caucasian father, Gordon (Jason Clarke), and Black mother, Lorene (Yolanda Ross). We first meet Sweetness as she is surrounded by a gang of neighborhood bullies led by the intimidatingly rotund Latonya (Gabourey Sidibe); Sweetness' older sister, Ola (Antonique Smith), comes to her rescue and the siblings scurry home. (Presumably the encounter is related to Sweetness' mixed-race parentage.) Things at home are certainly no less dire. Sweetness and Ola's father is a violent alcoholic who disappears for extended periods of time; their mother is a total zombie, incapacitated by depression and God knows what other afflictions. We sense an inner rage boiling within Sweetness, and it is not long before she starts peddling drugs in the stairwell of her high...
