While the genre itself is nothing new, biopics seem like an easy way not only to make a lot of money at the box office but to bring home a bunch of trophies during awards season. If you're lucky and/or have the right director at the helm, you can achieve both like with 2023's "Oppenheimer," which grossed close to $1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time and took home Best Picture at that year's Academy Awards.

It feels like Hollywood isn't going to let go of this trend anytime soon, and for notable figures who become the subjects of these movies, it's often a chance to have their accomplishments shared with a vast audience. But even if a biopic is largely complimentary, some people just don't like seeing their dirty laundry aired for the world to see.

Not long after Lionsgate premiered the official trailer for Wish You Were Here, which will see Julia Stiles make her directorial debut, the film just got another exciting new look. Screen Rant has debuted a new image from the upcoming romance drama, which follows a woman searching for a spark that she finds with a new man, only to learn he’s terminally ill. Still, this doesn’t stop her from helping him live out his final days to the fullest. The new image previews the two main characters, currently unnamed but played by Isabelle Fuhrmann and Mena Massoud, gazing into each other’s eyes before Massoud’s character goes into the later stages of his terminal illness. Gabby Konp-Abdy, Jimmie Falls, Kelsey Grammer, Jennifer Grey, Jordan Gavaris, and Antonique Smith will also feature in Wish You Were Here.

Actress Antonique Smith and activist Rev Yearwood have teamed up to launch Climate Revival, a new nonprofit using the power of music and celebrity to mobilize faith communities and people of color to get out the climate vote, both in the 2024 election and beyond.

Everyone wants concerts to come back. Everyone who attended the premiere event for Nat Geo’s “Genius: Aretha” at the makeshift drive-in in the Rose Bowl parking lot Thursday had a more specific wish: that Cynthia Erivo concerts would come back. Never mind that that really hasn’t much of a thing up till now, with Erivo being too busy with acting gigs to tour. The premiere screening was followed by a taped performance by Erivo, filmed last weekend nearby in an empty Greek Theatre, that made it clear the road and audiences along it will be ready whenever she is.

The event will be marked by a pre-show of performances, multi-city drive-in screenings, and a finale of Cynthia Erivo performing Aretha Franklin songs taped at the Greek Theater.

Vance; The World Premiere screening of Genius: Aretha: An exclusive performance of Aretha classics by Cynthia Erivo taped at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

The series will stage its regular network premiere on March 21 on Nat Geo.

After a months-long coronavirus-related delay, National Geographic’s Genius: Aretha resumed production today in Atlanta as planned, and cast and crew were greeted with a welcome back letter from executive producer/showrunner Suzan-Lori Parks.

Genius: Aretha, starring Cynthia Erivo as the legendary singer Aretha Franklin, had filmed 5 1/2 episodes of its eight-episode order when production shut down mid-March amid the escalating coronavirus outbreak. Two weeks later, Nat Geo delayed the premiere of the limited series, originally slated for May 25. There is new date yet.

“We are fortunate to be working on such a beautiful, necessary, and relevant show In these challenging and difficult times,” Parks wrote in the letter, obtained by Deadline. “We’ll get through this together. We’ll lead with respect and compassion. We have been called to serve the Queen of Soul.”

T.I. is set to recur on Genius: Aretha, the next installment of Nat Geo’s popular anthology from Imagine Television and Fox 21 TV Studios that stars Cynthia Erivo as the Queen of Soul.

Antonique Smith and Tina Fears also have joined the project as recurring, while Ethan Henry is set to guest star as Mlk, Jr. Most of the castings happened just before Genius: Aretha, like every other TV series and movies in production, shut down a week and a half ago over the escalating coronavirus-related health crisis.

Additionally, on what would’ve been Aretha Franklin’s 78th birthday today, March 25, Nat Geo released a new image from the show featuring Erivo as the music legend.

Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis, Ryan Kwanten and newcomer Jordan Alexander in her first major leading role, are set as series regulars in Sacred Lies: The Singing Bones, the second season of the anthology series from Blumhouse Television for Facebook Watch. Additionally, Kimiko Glenn, Kristin Bauer, Grammy nominated singer Antonique Smith (Luke Cage), Siobhan Williams, Emily Alyn Lind and Odiseas Georgiadis (Trinkets) will join the series in recurring roles.

Netflix unveiled a brand image spot during Sunday’s Bet Awards telecast that highlights black artists who work for the streaming giant.

The spot dubbed “A Great Day in Hollywood” was inspired by the famed 1958 photograph “A Great Day in Harlem” featuring 57 jazz legends — including Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and Count Basie — on the stairs of New York brownstone snapped by photographer Art Kane.

The Netflix spot from director Lacey Duke features 47 black writers, showrunners, actors, and producers. The plan for the spot and the image campaign stemmed from Netflix’s Strong Black Lead initiative designed to foster an “ongoing, intentional focus to talk authentically with the black audience.” A photo similar to “Great Day in Harlem” was taken earlier this month by photographer Kwaku Alston to commemorate the gathering.

In Yelling to the Sky, Sweetness O'Hara (Zoe Kravitz) has never had it easy. It’s not quite accurate to call Victoria Mahoney’s directorial and screenwriting debut, Yelling to the Sky, a failed effort, but its attempts to relate the rough and tumble adolescence of a young girl’s life in a mixed race Queens household feel overly familiar and not quite fully realized. However, Mahoney’s nascent talents as a director are frequently on display here, though her stylish flourishes would have perhaps been more at home on something that wasn’t a semi-autobiographical treatment of a subject, that, because of its casting and narrative similarities, will be unfavorably compared to 2009’s more compelling and divisive Precious.

During last night's Hollywood party for the Blu-ray and DVD release of X-Men: First Class, I got to speak with young actor Denzel Whitaker on the red carpet. Denzel Whitaker stars in the upcoming thriller Abduction, portraying Gilly, the best friend of Taylor Lautner's main character, Nathan. Here's what he had to say about Abduction on the red carpet.

"Gilly is Taylor Lautner's character's best friend in the film. Taylor's character, Nathan, sort of gets into some trouble, where he sees his picture on a missing persons website. That sort of spawns the whole action throughout the movie. Basically, my character is the one dude he can trust, his best friend, he knows he's not going to turn on him."

I told him that when I first heard about the movie, that I had this thought in my head that he Nathan was kidnapped at birth by who he thinks are his parents.

There's no R&B chord, A-list feature or catchy chorus. On "Nasty," the first single from Nas' 10th solo album, The Good Life, the rapper takes things back to hip-hop basics: hard rhymes over an infectious loop.

The song, which leaked online Monday night, is reminiscent of New York's 1980s infamous park jams and starts out with a DJ asking the rapper's native Queensbridge housing projects, "Are y'all ready to see Nasty Nas?" The question is, of course, rhetorical.

The Abduction Movie Trailer has premiered. John Singleton‘s Abduction (2011) stars Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, and Jason Isaacs. Abduction‘s plot synopsis: “A thriller centered on a young man named Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.” They sure did give away many of the plot points in the first movie trailer for Abduction. They showed key people dying in this first trailer for Abduction but they certainly didn’t go down without a fight. I really hope they explain how all of those “skills” suddenly turn on in Nathan. Seems a little strange. In the Bourne Identity its explained. Let’s hope they do the same in Abduction and that Nathan doesn’t have amnesia. That would be lame if this film turns out to be Jason Bourne in high school.
