This fall’s world premiere in Minneapolis of the stage musical Purple Rain will star an up-and-coming musician-songwriter named Kris Kollins in the main role of The Kid, made famous in the 1984 film by rock star Prince.

Kollins’ casting, as well as that of & Juliet star Rachel Webb as Apollonia, was announced today by producer Orin Wolf. Purple Rain will play at the State Theatre in Minneapolis from October 16 – November 16; a Broadway timeline has not been disclosed.

In addition to the castings, Wolf also announced the production’s choreographer (Ebony Williams) and design team: Purple Rain will feature scenic design by Tony Award-winner David Zinn; video & projection design by Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom; costume design by Montana Levi Blanco; lighting design by Yi Zhao; sound design by Palmer Hefferan; and hair and wig design by Cookie Jordan.

Barbra Streisand, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Jack Black will appear on Project Angel Food’s upcoming Lead With Love telethon on Ktla 5.

Project Angel Food provides home delivery meals to critically ill people throughout Los Angeles County. This year’s telethon will focus on neighborhoods impacted by the January wildfires.

“Project Angel Food is there before, during, and after every crisis. Amid growing needs following the fires, inflation, and uncertainty around federal funding, Lead with Love is essential,” Project Angel Food CEO Richard Ayoub said in a statement Monday. “Thousands of volunteers and donors stand with us to ensure no one in Los Angeles faces illness or crisis alone. The musical, which won six Tony Awards, tells the story of a girl group that achieves celebrity and deals with the ups and downs of that kind of life. The Best Actress award went to Jennifer Holliday for her role in this musical, a performance from which her rendition of And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going emerged as the piece de resistance for this show. Years later, that song became a favorite for a young Jennifer Hudson, though she never realized it was originally from Dreamgirls. Fast forward to 2006, when Hudson auditioned for the film adaptation of the same musical, the connection hit her. She admitted at the time of the movie’s release that she was “surprised to find” she’d be singing the same songs she grew up loving.

Jamal Roberts was voted winner at the Season 23 finale by fans of the ABC singing competition. Host Ryan Seacrest said there were 26 million votes cast, which broke a record and was twice as many as for last year’s finale.

Roberts is the first Black man to win the singing competition since Ruben Studdard was crowned champ of Season 2, which aired in 2003.

The final three contestants — pop-country singer Breanna Nix, R&b artist Jamal Roberts, and country star John Foster — went head-to-head-to-head during ABC's three-hour finale on Sunday night. After America voted live coast-to-coast, Jamal was named the winner, John finished as the runner-up, and Breanna came in third place.

Jamal is now the second Black man to win American Idol after Season 2's Ruben Studdard 22 years ago, in 2003. Meanwhile, there have been four Black women to prevail: Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, Candice Glover, and Just Sam.

ABC has announced the lineup of superstar guests for its upcoming Season 23 finale, and the Top 14 are among them. The Final 5 contestants — Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, John Foster, Slater Nalley, and Thunderstorm Artis — will appear alongside the nine most recently eliminated artists: Gabby Samone, Mattie Pruitt, Josh King, Canaan James Hill, Kolbi Jordan, Ché Chesterman, Filo, Amanda Barise, and Desmond Roberts.

The three judges — Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie — will sing a showstopping number together, and "Artist in Residence" Jelly Roll will deliver a performance in addition to his role as the season finale mentor. Just one week before his 2017 inauguration, The Guardian reported that country singer Toby Keith – who has since passed away – had been successfully booked.

To that point in time, Trump's first-term transition team had only managed to book "a teenage singer ... who launched a successful career after appearing on the reality TV competition America’s Got Talent":

Maurice Hines, the Broadway dancer, choreographer and actor who famously showcased his skills alongside his late younger brother, Gregory Hines, in a Nicholas Brothers-like act featured in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club, has died. He was 80.

Hines died Friday of natural causes at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, his cousin and rep, Richard Nurse, told The Hollywood Reporter. He lived there for a couple of years.

The elegant, Harlem-born Hines received a Tony Award nomination in 1986 for best actor in a musical for Uptown … It’s Hot and starred again on Broadway in 2006’s Hot Feet. He conceived, directed and choreographed both productions.

Loretta Devine will step in for her old Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Holliday in the upcoming New York City Center gala presentation of Pal Joey starring Ephraim Sykes.

Holliday had been previously announced for the role of nightclub owner Lucille Wallace but bowed out due to scheduling conflicts. The production runs Nov. 1-5 at City Center, starting with a benefit performance to be followed by a gala dinner at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

Both Devine and Holliday became Broadway stars for their performances in the original production of Dreamgirls in 1981, with Devine playing Lorrell Robinson and Holliday playing Effie Melody White.

The starry gala presentation of Pal Joey will be co-directed by Savion Glover and Tony Goldwyn, with Glover choreographing. The musical is being reconceived, with the character of Joey Evans portraying the character as a Black jazz singer who refuses to compromise on his craft...

Following a season that saw its Broadway transfers Into the Woods and Parade score a slew of Tony Award nominations, the New York City Center has announced what’s coming next for its celebrated Encores! series: Once Upon a Mattress, Jelly’s Last Jam and Titanic.

The 30th annual Encores! season of concert stagings will kick off in January with Sutton Foster playing Princess Winnifred the Woebegone in Once Upon a Mattress (January 24-28) – the role made famous in 1959 by then-up-and-comer Carol Burnett. Directed by Encores! Artistic Director Lear deBessonet with a new concert adaptation by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, the comical update of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea features such musical numbers as “Shy” and “In a Little While” with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer.

Vocally, she's never sounded better, which a strong belt and confident mixed voice that soars. No wonder the audience loves her!

Tonight on “American Idol,” the Top 20 contestants perform live, with overnight voting results revealing 10 Idol hopefuls who will continue. Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will choose two singers to round out the Top 12 competing to be the next American Idol. The Masked Singer has teamed up with McDonald's and finally created plush toys of favorite characters from the reality singing competition show that are available in Happy Meals. The Masked Singer premiered in 2019, with a cast of masked celebrities singing inside lovable costumes. The panelists--Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger--use clues to try to guess who each contestant is. There has been demand for plushies of these cute characters since the show began, and now The Masked Singer and McDonald's are making that wish come true.

Fred White, who played drummer for the Grammy-winning R&b band Earth, Wind & Fire during its 1970s and early-’80s heyday including such classic songs as “September” and “Shining Star,” has died. He was 67. His brother and bandmate Verdine White announced on social media that White was found dead on New Year’s morning.

“Our family is saddened today with the loss of an amazing and talented family member, our beloved brother Frederick Eugene ‘Freddy’ White,” he wrote (see the post below). “He joins our brothers Maurice, Monte and Ronald in heaven and is now with the angels.”

In 2022, The Masked Singer seasons 7 and 8 had some of the biggest celebrities in the history of the show, and a few of them were especially shocking. After last season’s controversial decision to include a disgraced politician who is the target of a criminal investigation involving the attempts in 2020 to overthrow the democratically-elected President of the United States, “The Masked Singer” returns next month with a new crop of contestants — and Variety has a first look at one of the costumes.

“Bride,” the dragon-esque character as seen above, reps the first character to be introduced so far for the Season 8 of “Masked Singer.” Bride was created by costume designer Tim Chappel, who has also designed creations for the Australian version of the series.

Fox has so far not revealed any other characters. But the show is having some fun with speculation on social media (and on the Fox-owned TMZ website) that NFL superstar Tom Brady may appear on the new season, since he’s been missing from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp.

Broadway’s Chicago is getting a new Billy Flynn next month: Erich Bergen.

The Madam Secretary star assumes the role Aug. 1, hitting the stage at the Ambassador Theatre in New York on a run that continues through Sept. 11.

The showing follows a Broadway outing late last year in Waitress, for which he reprised his role as love interest Dr. Jim Pomatter, a part he previously played in 2018 and again in 2019. Bergen has also been seen on screens big and small in Bull, Jersey Boys, Gossip Girl, The Good Fight, Humor Me and more.

Bergen, who also produces major events through his 6W Entertainment, is repped by Buchwald and Industry Entertainment.

To be clear, every other unmasked contestant from this “Good, Bad and Ugly” cycle was prominently featured in the recap episode (see the list below). Obviously, the former New York City Mayor and personal attorney to Donald Trump was the most controversial figure to ever appear on the reality TV singing show.
