Jennifer Hudson’s Iconic Rise Through ‘Dreamgirls’
Jennifer Hudson
Image Source: Paramount Pictures The audiences were enthralled when Dreamgirls opened on Broadway when Jennifer Hudson only 14 weeks old. The musical, which won six Tony Awards, tells the story of a girl group that achieves celebrity and deals with the ups and downs of that kind of life. The Best Actress award went to Jennifer Holliday for her role in this musical, a performance from which her rendition of And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going emerged as the piece de resistance for this show. Years later, that song became a favorite for a young Jennifer Hudson, though she never realized it was originally from Dreamgirls. Fast forward to 2006, when Hudson auditioned for the film adaptation of the same musical, the connection hit her. She admitted at the time of the movie’s release that she was “surprised to find” she’d be singing the same songs she grew up loving.

Fans Aren't Happy That Carrie Underwood Is Performing At Trump's Inauguration
Image
American Idol winner, singer, and now judge, Carrie Underwood, will be performing at fellow reality TV star President-Elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, and her fans are highly unimpressed.

Trump was inaugurated for the first time on January 20, 2017, and famously struggled to book talent as he prepared to take the White House for the first time.

Just one week before his 2017 inauguration, The Guardian reported that country singer Toby Keith – who has since passed away – had been successfully booked.

To that point in time, Trump's first-term transition team had only managed to book "a teenage singer ... who launched a successful career after appearing on the reality TV competition America’s Got Talent":

"Donald Trump seemed to have been struggling to lure any major names to his inauguration – which he insisted [in January 2017] would be 'elegant' and 'very special' – until [January 13, 2017], when he announced an appearance by the leading country artist Toby Keith.

Can ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ claim a trio of acting wins at the 2024 Tony Awards?
Image
The actors from the current revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Merrily We Roll Along” have skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s combined odds for the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The prediction center displays commanding leads for Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe to win their respective categories. This is an understandable result considering this revival is the hottest ticket in town and this trio of performers has been ever-present in the media. But how often does a trio of actors from the same production pull off three separate acting victories at the Tony Awards?

It’s quite common for a musical to grab two acting trophies, but three awards is much rarer. To date, only 15 musical productions have earned three acting wins. The first time this feat occurred was at the 1956 ceremony, which was ironically the first time the Tony Awards ever announced a slate of nominees (previously...

Breaking Baz: Mohawk Lady Steals Tequila At Critics Choice Awards While Team ‘Barbie’ Stays Classy; Harrison Ford Embraces Ryan Gosling & Sheryl Lee Ralph Reunites With Robert De Niro
Image
The Critics Choice Award for chutzpah goes to … the lady swathed in gold lamé, sporting a Mohawk fade hairstyle who, without so much as a by-your-leave, crashed past me and scooped up a bottle of Milagro Silver tequila that was part of the centerpiece on tables at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

“Can I,” she asks, grabbing the booze.

Wasn’t my liquor.

The thing that made me jump up in my seat was that Mohawk Lady already had bottles under her arm.

Quick as a flash, she repeated the same move at neighboring tables.

By now she had a haul of five or six bottles. Crash! One of them fell to the ground, so she swiped a replacement.

Stirred the former crime reporter in me. Who was Mohawk Lady?

She’s an online critic, someone at another table tells me.

Later on I ask her directly but she mumbles,...

Maurice Hines, the Broadway dancer, choreographer and actor who famously showcased his skills alongside his late younger brother, Gregory Hines, in a Nicholas Brothers-like act featured in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club, has died. He was 80.

Hines died Friday of natural causes at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, his cousin and rep, Richard Nurse, told The Hollywood Reporter. He lived there for a couple of years.

The elegant, Harlem-born Hines received a Tony Award nomination in 1986 for best actor in a musical for Uptown … It’s Hot and starred again on Broadway in 2006’s Hot Feet. He conceived, directed and choreographed both productions.

In his THR review of the 2019 documentary Maurice Hines: Bring Them Back, Frank Scheck wrote that the Hines brothers had a falling out and didn’t talk for 10 years “for reasons that Maurice refuses to discuss to this day. He provides no explanation in the film,...

Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong in Schmigadoon! (2021)
Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Famous As Hell
Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong in Schmigadoon! (2021)
Brace yourself for a broken record.

How can this show keep getting better and better when it's so good already? On Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 5, the hits start right off the bat, and they just keep coming.

Everyone on screen and behind the scenes is a master of their craft. It's that simple, folks!

Tituss Burgess gives us a sinister Sweeney-esque recap of where we're at with our various plotlines, and even though he's fantastic here, it can't compare to his big number that comes a little later in the episode.

Melissa has truly come into her own, and Cecily Strong is there right along with her.

Dropping the Funny Girl costume (and schtick), Strong goes full-on torch singer with "My Turn Now," an homage to the magnificent "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret.

Vocally, she's never sounded better, which a strong belt and confident mixed voice that soars. No wonder the audience loves her!

Drag Is A Force For Good, Shows Upcoming Documentary ‘The Little Pageant That Could’ From World Of Wonder & Gatekeeper Productions
Image
Exclusive: A ban on drag performances in public places has been enacted in Tennessee, and more than a dozen other states may follow suit, a movement predicated on the fear that children who might glimpse such a show would be scarred by it. But an upcoming documentary defies that demonization by portraying drag performers as a force for good in their community.

Emmy-winning media company World of Wonder and Gatekeeper Productions today announced they have wrapped production on The Little Pageant That Could, a feature documentary that chronicles the journey of L.A.’s Best in Drag Show to support the Alliance for Housing and Healing.

“The event, which started as a spur-of-the-moment spoof of Miss America thrown by a few twenty-something friends in a tiny West Hollywood apartment in 1990, grew to become L.A.’s longest-running drag benefit including appearances by A-list actors,...

Singing Jennifer Holliday’s Song Was A Dream(Girls) Come True For Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson
When Jennifer Hudson was just 14 weeks old, the musical Dreamgirls debuted on the Broadway stage, where it won six Tony Awards, including a Best Actress trophy for the show’s breakout star, Jennifer Holliday. Holliday also earned a Grammy Award and a No. 1 R&b hit with the musical’s show-stopping number, And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going. That was a song young Jennifer Hudson grew up listening to and loving, though she never realized it came from Dreamgirls. So, when she auditioned for the Dreamgirls movie, Hudson told us she was surprised to find she’d be singing Holliday’s songs. (Click on the media bar below to hear Jennifer Hudson) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Jeninfer_Hudson_Dreamgirls_.mp3

Most Shocking Masked Singer Reveals In 2022
Image
In 2022, The Masked Singer seasons 7 and 8 had some of the biggest celebrities in the history of the show, and a few of them were especially shocking. Although both seasons had some extraordinarily talented singers, there were a few that the panelists were unable to guess. Due to a different format, the season 7 contestants had a better chance of staying on the show longer than in season 8, but, even with the extra performances and clues, there were a few contestants who truly shocked the panel and viewers.

The Masked Singer season 7 featured some very big stars, including Penn & Teller (Hydra), Jennifer Holliday (Teddy Bear), Kirstie Alley (Baby Mammoth), Shaggy (Space Bunny), En Vogue (Queen Cobras), Cheyenne Jackson (Prince), and winner Teyana Taylor (Firefly). However, every one of those contestants was guessed by at least one member of the panel. The same is true of The Masked Singer season 8 contestants William Shatner...

Billy Porter Broke Barriers on Stage and on TV. Now, He’s Shifting His Focus to His ‘Original Dream’
Image
Billy Porter is three decades into a career he was repeatedly told would never happen.

A Black, queer artist with a booming voice and indelible screen and stage presence, Porter has ascended to extraordinary heights by defying those expectations.

“It’s been a wild, unexpected, glorious ride to get to this place of knowing and living what was possible then to what is possible now,” he tells Variety. “Who I am now was an impossibility then.”

Now a Grammy, Tony and Emmy-winning legend, the 53- year-old will be honored on Dec. 1 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The “Kinky Boots” and “Pose” star was surprised by news of the honor, even if his collaborators aren’t.

“It’s only right for his name to be etched in history for people to stop, stare and remember how much weight he has and how lasting his impact is,” says Michaela Jaé Rodriguez,...

Jennifer Hudson Recounts "Fanning Out" Over Duet With Sheryl Lee Ralph: "I Wanted to Make Her Proud"
Image

Jennifer Hudson has been blessed with some extraordinary mentors in life. Like many of us, the first was her mom, who always told her: "Jennifer, all you can do is the best you can do." That guidance served Hudson well through the years, especially when she landed her Oscar-winning role of Effie in 2006's "Dreamgirls." "I remember when I was getting ready to shoot 'Dreamgirls' and record the 'And I Am Telling You' song, and I'm like, 'What is left for me to do to this song?'" Hudson tells Popsugar. "My mom said, 'All you can do is the best you can do.' And something as simple as that. It's been something to carry me throughout my life when I get in tough situations and can't figure out things."

As the Egot-winning artist embarks on her latest role as host to her own daytime talk show,...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: Who is Harp?
Image
“The Masked Singer” season 8 kicked off on September 21 with an episode packed with performances by four of the 22 contestants. The stand-out among this quartet was the celebrity disguised as the Harp. How appropriate that she was designed as this most heavenly of musical instruments as her voice sounded angelic while she sang a soaring cover of the Pink hit “Perfect.”

We’ve been rewatching her first performance, which dropped in advance of the premiere, and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Harp”?

See Everything to know about ‘The Masked Singer’ Season 8

The Harp has a distinctive voice that we heard so clearly in the intro to the song when she sang a capella. That crystal clear sound was sustained throughout the tune as she hit one high note after another. It was no surprise that the four judges — Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy,...

First Time Emmy Winner Sheryl Lee Ralph Has A Legendary Broadway Background
Image
After Sheryl Lee Ralph was announced as the Emmy Award winner for her role as Barbara Howard on "Abbott Elementary," she took to the stage and immediately began singing her face off — belting out the song "Endangered Species" by Dianne Reeves. As she held out a perfect note, completely enrapturing the audience, cheers erupted from the Emmy attendees, and probably everyone watching at home from their couches too. Thanks to the success and popularity of "Abbott Elementary," a world of people are learning about Ralph's undeniable talent for the very first time, but make no mistake, Ralph is not a newcomer.

"I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like, this is what striving looks like, and don't you ever, ever give up on you," she said in her acceptance speech. It's a fitting statement from a woman who landed her breakthrough role as Deena Jones...

‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals First Season 8 Costume, the Dragon ‘Bride’ (Exclusive)
Image
After last season’s controversial decision to include a disgraced politician who is the target of a criminal investigation involving the attempts in 2020 to overthrow the democratically-elected President of the United States, “The Masked Singer” returns next month with a new crop of contestants — and Variety has a first look at one of the costumes.

“Bride,” the dragon-esque character as seen above, reps the first character to be introduced so far for the Season 8 of “Masked Singer.” Bride was created by costume designer Tim Chappel, who has also designed creations for the Australian version of the series.

Fox has so far not revealed any other characters. But the show is having some fun with speculation on social media (and on the Fox-owned TMZ website) that NFL superstar Tom Brady may appear on the new season, since he’s been missing from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp.

The show, which returns Wednesday,...

8 Of The Most Amazing, Breakout Musical Performances on Broadway Ever
Image
(For nearly 30 years, Susan Haskins-Doloff was co-host and executive producer of the classic PBS TV show “Theater Talk,” featuring fascinating and witty interviews with the leading stars and other creators of Broadway’s greatest shows.)

Anyone who has ever seen “The Music Man” knows act 1 ends with the citizens of River City, Iowa anticipating and then celebrating in song the arrival of the Wells Fargo wagon, which is bringing to town musical instruments for the kids that Professor Harold Hill has conned their parents into buying. After the townspeople have sung two verses expressing their excitement, Winthrop Paroo, the younger brother of the show’s heroine, Marian Paroo, steps forward and sings a third verse of the song. The audience knows that Winthrop has a lisp which has made him hesitant to talk, but here he is so joyful, that he is sufficiently unselfconscious to express himself in song. As...

Ben Winchell Looks for Meaning in Life in 'The Road to Galena' Trailer
The Road to Galena (2022)
"Time passes and suddenly you realize, 'this is it.'" Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled The Road to Galena, which will be out to watch starting this July. The film is another of these "what if you had everything, but you still felt something was missing?" kind of existential dramas. Power lawyer Cole Baird has all the trappings of success, but behind the façade, he’s crippled by a career he never wanted and a dream left behind. He now has a choice to make: continue a life of emptiness or follow the path to happiness back to his small, rural hometown. "A touching story of one man's quiet desperation giving way to fulfillment; a story that motivates us to travel our own roads toward a more meaningful life." The film stars Ben Winchell as Cole, Will Brittain, Jay O. Sanders, Jill Hennessy,...

Jenny McCarthy ‘dead serious’ about shaving her head if Ringmaster loses ‘The Masked Singer’
Image
Earlier this season on “The Masked Singer,” Jenny McCarthy was so wowed by one of Ringmaster’s performances that she told the circus kitty, “If you don’t win, I’m coming back with a shaved head next season.” Surely she was joking, right? The celebrity panelist isn’t really thinking about getting rid of her trademark blonde locks? Well, during the May 11 “Road to the Finals” episode of “Tms,” Jenny revealed she wasn’t exaggerating. “I was dead serious when I said I would shave my head because her level of talent is absolutely insane,” she reiterated. “It’s like one of the greatest voices I’ve ever heard, let alone on ‘Masked Singer.'”

‘The Masked Singer’ cancels Rudy Giuliani by deleting him from recap episode

Rudy who?

The “Road to the Finals” episode of “The Masked Singer,” which aired May 11 on Fox, showed clips, interviews and behind-the-scenes moments from Season 7, but one celebrity was noticeably missing: Rudy Giuliani. To be clear, every other unmasked contestant from this “Good, Bad and Ugly” cycle was prominently featured in the recap episode (see the list below). Obviously, the former New York City Mayor and personal attorney to Donald Trump was the most controversial figure to ever appear on the reality TV singing show. But after going through all the trouble of casting him and letting him perform on the big stage, we’re admittedly surprised to now see “The Masked Singer” cancel Rudy Giuliani.
