Star Trek fans around the globe are still celebrating the 30th anniversary of Voyager, which debuted on January 16, 1995. However, there’s another Voyager anniversary worth making note of, and that’s the 24th anniversary of the show’s finale, “Endgame,” which premiered on May 23, 2001.

It could be said that Patricia Herd had her very own Star Trek convention. The actress and author, who is now 90 years old, was married to two prolific character actors, both of whom appeared on Star Trek. She’s also worked on various films and television shows with other performers in the franchise.

Born as Patricia Ann Crowder, she was married to Joseph Ruskin from 1968 to 1979 and Richard Herd from 1980 to 2020, when he died. Ruskin guest starred as Galt in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Gamesters of Triskelion,” and later recurred as the Klingon, Tumek, in the Deep Space Nine episodes “The House of Quark” and “Looking for par’Mach in All the Wrong Places.” He also appeared as a Cardassian in DS9’s “Improbable Cause,” a Vulcan in the Voyager hour “Gravity,” and a Suliban doctor in “Broken Bow,” which served as the pilot for Enterprise.

Clint Eastwoodis an artist unlike any other. Over the course of his long career, he has contributed to world cinema, inspiring young and established filmmakers as an actor, writer, and director. Even at 94 years old, the filmmaker is going strong with his latest release being last year’s Juror #2 starring Nicholas Hoult. One of the gems from his long filmography is now arriving on Netflix.

The Mule, directed by and starring Eastwood is based on the 2014 article The Sinaloa Cartel's 90-Year-Old Drug Mule by Sam Dolnick. The movie follows him as the real-life figure, Leo Sharp, a World War II veteran in his 80s who became a drug mule for a cartel. The film was a commercial and critical success, garnering $174.8 million worldwide on a budget of $50 million.

Of the hundreds of pieces of entertainment Full Moon founder Charles Band has brought into the world, one of my favorites is the 1984 sci-fi thriller classic Trancers, which also happens to be one of my favorite Christmas movies. Now, Full Moon has revealed that they’ll be releasing a black & white version of Trancers, called Trancers Noir, on the Full Moon Features streaming service this Friday, February 7th!

Shortly before changing the horror genre forever with his role as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Robert Englund appeared in V, a sci-fi series that originally debuted in 1983. 41 years later, Englund reflected on the series with a post shared on social media.

"Happy V day! Original miniseries was released in 83," Englund said in a Facebook post, going on to share how the show wasn't initially envisioned as sci-fi. "The series was originally intended to be a political thriller about a fascist movement in the United States, inspired by Sinclair Lewiss 1935 novel It Cant Happen Here. However, network executives changed the series to science fiction to capitalize on the success of other science fiction hits."

Throughout its seven seasons, Star Trek: Voyager featured several callbacks to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Less than a year after the 1994 series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager promised a return to form for Star Trek television shows after Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's space station setting. Like Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) USS Enterprise-d, Captain Kathryn Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) USS Voyager took viewers on episodic journeys through the final frontier, with stops along the way to explore the strange new worlds of the Delta Quadrant.

To reinforce the idea of Star Trek: Voyager as a worthy successor to Star Trek: The Next Generation, Voyager rarely shied away from making references to the earlier Star Trek show. From familiar concepts to series regulars, Star Trek: Voyager found ways to incorporate characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation, despite being set on the other side of the galaxy.

In the premiere episode of Star Trek: Voyager, "Caretaker", Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) was a prisoner of the United Federation of Planets serving time in a New Zealand penal colony. At the time, Paris was a former Starfleet pilot who became a jaded loner with low self-esteem, and lost trust in the system that had repeatedly failed him. Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) knew Tom Paris as the son of her former commanding officer, Admiral Owen Paris (Richard Herd), and specifically sought Tom out to pilot the USS Voyager's risky Badlands mission in search of Chakotay's (Robert Beltran) Maquis raider.

The Doctor (Robert Picardo) managed to pull off a huge accomplishment in Star Trek: Voyager season 4, and I wish he got more credit for it. As a long-time Star Trek fan, there are things I love about every member of Voyager's cast of characters, but for me, the Doctor stands out above the rest. Robert Picardo and Voyager's creative team managed to create a character that is both hilarious and heartwarming, and some of Voyager's best episodes featured the Doctor as their main character.

The Doctor's arc throughout each of Voyager's seven seasons is also truly inspiring. Beginning the show as a blank slate, he created a life for himself and a place on the crew that was impressive given his initial limitations as an Emergency Medical Hologram. Likewise, the Doctor was involved in some of the show's most important moments, including one huge victory in season 4 that he pulled off almost single-handedly.

Steve Rankin played four characters across the Star Trek universe - Romulan, Cardassian, Klingon, and human militia leader. Rankin's first appearance was as injured Romulan Patahk on Star Trek: The Next Generation, followed by roles on Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. An accomplished actor, Rankin has appeared in numerous TV shows and films and is also a member of the Enterprise Blues Band.

Actor Steve Rankin has portrayed four different characters (and species) in the Star Trek universe. Rankin first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 7, "The Enemy," as an injured Romulan named Patahk. On Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Rankin first popped up as a Cardassian in the series premiere, "Emissary," and later as a Klingon Mercenary named Yeto in DS9 season 2, episode 4, "Invasive Procedures." Lt. Tom Paris is a charismatic and resilient character who bridges the divide between Starfleet and Maquis on the USS Voyager. Despite a checkered past and mistakes, Paris proves his strength of heart through his relationships with friends, romantic partner, and Captain Janeway. Episodes like "Vis à Vis," "The Chute," and "Thirty Days" highlight Paris' dedication, growth, and pursuit of redemption, showcasing his true character.

Even though Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be shortened to just one pre-taped hour on TNT and TBS, the special In Memoriam segment will still be a highlight. Since the 2020 event aired on January 19, it will be over 14 months until the one on April 4. That means even more actors, actresses and members of SAG/AFTRA will hopefully be honored than the 40 people in the tribute last year.

Chadwick Boseman died last August and is a four-time nominee for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. The two individual nominations are for his leading role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and his supporting performance in “Da 5 Bloods.” Those two films also are nominated for the top ensemble category.

Even though he wasn’t known for his TV work, blockbuster film actor Chadwick Boseman was featured in the final slot. NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant was not mentioned, even though the event was being held in the Staples Center.

For Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on ABC, producers will have the always difficult task of assembling a memoriam segment. Even though the event hosted by Jimmy Kimmel will be virtual, it’s a certainty they will include the popular “In Memoriam” on the show.

With over 100 television veterans having died since last year’s mid-September ceremony, those expected to be honored would include such TV legends and TV Academy Hall of Fame members:

This premiered at film festivals last year, and arrives on VOD next month. Miles Barbee stars as William Hoy, who loved baseball despite being deaf and being smaller than most players (at 5'4"). After two years in the Minor Leagues, Hoy signs with the Washington Senators in 1888 and leads the National League with 82 stolen bases in his rookie year. Being deaf, he introduced the hand signals for strike and ball to the game and overcame many obstacles to become one of the greatest players of his time. Herb Stempel, the federal whistleblower who exposed how the NBC game show “Twenty-One” was manipulated for ratings, died last month at the age of 93. His death was confirmed this weekend by Stempel’s stepdaughter to The New York Times.

Stempel’s story was told in the Robert Redford film “Quiz Show,” which starred John Turturro as Stempel and earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Stempel, an Army veteran attending school on the G.I. Bill, applied to be on “Twenty-One” and was handpicked by producer Dan Enright to be the star of the show, portrayed as an American underdog making thousands for his family.

Stempel was given the answers to questions in advance, winning thousands during his run on the show.

Larry Kramer, a legendary playwright, author, screenwriter and activist in the 1980s who helped shift government policy during the AIDS crisis and also penned the acclaimed play “The Normal Heart,” has died of pneumonia, his husband told The New York Times. He was 84.

In addition to his activism, Kramer got his start rewriting scripts for Columbia Pictures and was an Oscar nominee for his screenplay for “Women in Love” from 1969 as directed by Ken Russell. He’s also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his play “The Destiny of Me” from 1992 and has twice won the Obie Award.

Kramer founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis in response to the spread of AIDS in 1981, making it the first organization to support those who had tested positive for HIV. Richard Herd, an instantly recognizable character actor who recurred as Mr. Wilhelm on Seinfeld and appeared in All the President’s Men, The China Syndrome and several Star Trek projects, among many other credits, died Tuesday in Los Angeles of cancer complications. He was 87.

Herd’s death was announced by his wife, actress Patricia Crowder Herd.

Herd is probably best known to TV audiences for his role as Mr. Wilhelm on Seinfeld, George Costanza’s New York Yankees boss who in one memorable episode is recruited by a religious cult (1996’s “The Checks”) and in another (1995’s “The Hot Tub”) is convinced George is cracking under the stress of the Big Leagues. Herd appeared in 11 Seinfeld episodes during it last four seasons, including the finale.

Herd appeared as the leader of the Watergate burglars in 1976’s All the President’s Men and as the duplicitous nuclear power plant boss in 1979’s The China Syndrome.

A representative told TheWrap that Herd died of cancer-related causes at his home in Los Angeles with his family present.

Herd recurred throughout several seasons of the sitcom as Mr. Wilhelm, supervisor to Jason Alexander’s George Costanza during his time as an employee of the New York Yankees. He appeared alongside the show’s caricature of former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who was voiced by Larry David.

Herd’s big-screen credits included “The China Syndrome” (1979) “F.I.S.T.” (1979), “The Onion Field” (1979), “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” (1987) and “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” (1997). He portrayed Supreme Commander John in the 1983 NBC miniseries “V” and its sequel; the Klingon L’Kor on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”; Admiral William Noyce on “seaQuest 2032”; and Admiral Owen Paris on “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Renegades.”

Once upon a time, when there were just three major networks, the schedules would be filled with glossy, interesting, high-concept miniseries, usually aired during the vital November, February, and May sweeps periods when the ratings were used to set advertising rates. This is what gave us great concepts like ABC’s Roots or, in 1983, V.

Metro subways and bus stations were plastered that spring with red-suited people, wearing sunglasses and big smiles, wrapping their arms around ordinary folk and we were assured: “The Visitors are our Friends”. A few weeks later, they were replaced with replicas but now a spray-painted V covered them and we got a hint of the Visitors’ true, reptilian nature.

The V miniseries, wonderfully written and directed by Ken Johnson (he of Incredible Hulk fame) was a taut two-night affair that presented the aliens coming to Earth and befriending us before their true intentions were revealed and a resistance movement began.

While the easiest route to success post Halloween was to copy that particular formula, not everyone followed the slasher template; elements to be sure, but some films chose to borrow from their Italian brethren and dive into the giallo pool. Case in point: Schizoid (1980), an effective thriller that leans much more towards whodunit and shadowed menace.

Given a limited release by Cannon Films stateside in the fall, Schizoid was soon relegated to home video for Klaus Kinski Kinky Kompletists only and no one else, it seems. I saw it as an adolescent and took it as just an okay notch on the burgeoning horror belt; a revisit has shone a stronger light on its surprisingly potent themes of manipulation and toxic masculinity. That, and Klaus, of course.

But no. Based on the evidence of this sorry lot, Starfleet generally just promote whoever happens to be in the vicinity and looks good in the fancy uniform.

Ever wondered what happened after Voyager in the Star Trek universe? A new movie explores just that, except it's not official in any way.

Star Trek: Renegades has been released in its entirety on YouTube today (August 24), following a crowdfunded campaign back in 2013. Is it any good? Take a look for yourself:

Yeah... it's not exactly Into Darkness. The project is essentially fan fiction shot on a shoestring budget with a huge amount of greenscreen. Still, die-hard Star Trek fans will no doubt love seeing some of their favourites back.

Although it is not official Star Trek canon, it does feature several characters and actors from the original universe, including Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov and Tim Russ as Voyager's Tuvok.

Richard Herd returns as Voyager's Owen Paris and Robert Picardo is back as Doctor Lewis Zimmerman.

And, most depressingly, Terminator 2 actor Edward Furlong also appears as a character named 'Fixer'.

It is fair to say that Charles Band makes some interesting movies, most of them B-movies with a cult charm. As fans we love them for this very fact, whether it’s the brave move to just go for the fun instead of high quality drama, or sometimes and often more rarely actually being a surprisingly good movie. 88 Films are releasing one of these on Blu-ray in the form of Trancers, a movie that borrows a lot from Bladerunner but adds a time travelling concept that for its time was quite smart.

This hidden-camera TV show is adapted from Benidorm Bastards, a hit TV series from Belgium. The elderly play pranks on members of the younger set as they take senior stereotypes and turn them on their ear, thanks to a cast of sassy septuagenarians who are hip, sexy and ready to party.

Betty White, "America's favorite comedy sweetheart," sends a fearless band of senior citizens to the streets to pull shocking and (hopefully) hilarious pranks on the younger generation.

Star Trek is pretty much unique when it comes to fan-made movies and episodes that pay homage to the sci-fi series. Left alone by CBS and Paramount (as long as they don’t try to make money from them) fans build elaborate sets and even bring in recognisable Star Trek actors to produce work that is anything but amateur.

The latest hoping to go into production is Star Trek: Renegades, co-written by Jack Trevino and staring Walter Koenig, Tim Russ, Garrett Wang and Robert Picardo among others, names that will be familiar to any Star Trek fan.

Jack Trevino is no stranger to the world of Star Trek. Having written the hugely popular fan-made miniseries Star Trek: Of Gods And Men which stared a number of Star Trek actors including Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols. The series was awarded ‘Best Web Production 2008’ by SyFy Portal which is now Alpha Airlock.

Among them are Walter Koenig (Chekov), Tim Russ (Tuvok), Gary Graham (Enterprise), Richard Herd, Garrett Wang and Initiraymi (all from Voyager). More about the show will be revealed soon. The official announcement includes the following: "Renegades will be a departure from previous Treks – delving into the dark side of the human psyche, pushing our heroes to their limits, forcing them to carry out actions that they never would have as Starfleet officers. The rules have changed, and they realize they might be the last hope to save the Federation. Star Trek: Renegades will be action oriented, filled with suspense and espionage; all while exploring new worlds, encountering both familiar and new alien species, and boldly going where no Trek has gone before.

Walter Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series, is set to receive his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. He is the last cast member of the original crew to receive the honour and he will unveil the star on Hollywood Boulevard on September 10th 2012. It’s being reported that the star will be close to the plaque of friend and co-star George Takei, who played Mr Sulu.

A two-day celebration will coincide with the event. On 8th September there will be a gala event that will also mark the 46th anniversary of Star Trek which first aired in 1966. The following day Koenig will be on the receiving end of a roast at the Beverly Garland Hotel.

Bet today announced its new slate of shows for its 2011 Upfront presentation tonight in New York City. In addition to the Viacom-owned network’s staples - like the Hip Hop Awards and 106 and Park - Bet is adding a handful of web sereis to its roster, many of which were created, written by, and star individuals who Tubefilter readers will find familiar. The shows include: Lenox Avenue - A dramatic web series that tells the story of three male friends in their mid-twenties, who are good dressers and busy navigating the rough terrain of love, relationships and careers. Last week, we reported that work is underway on a feature film based on T.J. Hooker, the 1980s TV show that stars William Shatner, Adrian Zmed, Heather Locklear, James Darren, Richard Herd, and Hugh Farrington. While the original series is a drama, the plan is to make this new movie a comedy.

Movie producer Ryan Heppe told Variety, "The series was the poster child for cop TV shows in the 1980s with great stunts, so we think there's a fun movie to be made from it."

The concept seems tailor made to include actors from the television show in some capacity and Heppe agrees. He told the New York Post, "We absolutely want to try and get the original cast in the movie."

Yet another William Shatner TV series is heading to movie theaters. This time, it's T.J. Hooker, the cop show executive produced by Aaron Spelling during his legendary run on ABC. Shatner didn't get to be in the recent Star Trek reboot, will he be in this movie?

T.J. Hooker revolves around a veteran cop (Shatner) who, after his plainclothes partner is killed in the line of duty, returns to the streets as a patrol sergeant. He's assigned to train academy recruits and is partnered with a young, headstrong rookie named Vince Romano (Adrian Zmed). Others in the series include Heather Locklear, James Darren, Richard Herd, and Hugh Farrington.

The series ran for two seasons on ABC as an hour-long drama before the alphabet network cancelled it. CBS then picked it up for two more seasons but assigned it to the late night "Crime Time After Prime-Time" schedule, running opposite The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
