Exclusive: Rising Spanish-Colombian filmmaker Gala Del Sol has signed with M88 for representation.
Del Sol is coming off the Sundance premiere of Rains Over Babel, her genre-bending debut feature, which she wrote, directed, and produced. Reimagining Dante’s “Inferno” through a queer, tropical-punk lens, the film is set in the mythical City of Maya, a retrofuturistic version of Cali, Colombia, and centers around Babel, a legendary dive bar that serves as a purgatorial meeting point for lost souls. Presiding over this enigmatic establishment is La Flaca, the city’s Grim Reaper, who challenges patrons to gamble years of their lives in hopes of altering their destinies.
After launching at Sundance, Rains Over Babel went on to make its European premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this month.
Previously, Del Sol was a finalist for the Student Academy Awards with her short film Pasajeros en trance, which was her thesis from Chapman University.

Everything may not be what it seems, but some things just never change — including Alex Russo giving her brother a hard time about wizard training. This time, it’s happening in a new behind-the-scenes look at “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.”
Footage from the sequel series — first ordered at the start of this year and revealed its official title back in May — aired on Disney Channel Friday night, during the broadcast premiere of “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” and introduced fans to the new Alex.
Don’t worry, we don’t mean that our girl has been replaced. In fact, Selena Gomez is all over this footage, as she’ll reprise her role in the series premiere and is an executive producer on the series. And no, there isn’t another double of her like in “The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.” We just mean that there’s a new young wizard in town,...

“Introducing the Academy class of 2016,” reads the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences website announcement of its invited new members Wednesday. And while joining that august organization is a singular honor, many say they were surprised to learn of their inclusion — mainly because they hadn’t applied for membership. Traditionally, that’s a laborious process that can take years before you get recommended by peers, vetted by your branch, and finally invited. Every year it’s a shock that someone like, say Tina Fey, IFC’s Arianna Bocco, last year’s Oscar-winner Margaret Sixel (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), or Oscar marketer Lisa Taback, wasn’t already a member.
