Sequels are often the source of major excitement because of the prospect of getting more of an amazing set of characters or an immersive world. However, the same prospect can lead to skepticism, because sequels often have the potential to disappoint viewers by trying to recreate the magic of the original to no avail. The most disappointing movie sequels of the 2010s all have this issue of lacking the depth of the original film, blatantly trying to ride the success of the first movie without being creative or original.

Even trying to be different can have its drawbacks, as demonstrated by the bad movie sequels that missed the point of the original film. The potential of more entertaining stories in a beloved world with an equally beloved group of characters often puts a lot of pressure on a sequel. This is why so many sequels have failed to live up to the hype surrounding them.

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, the “Jason vs. Tina” battle in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, the “all hell breaks loose” sequence from the start of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, the opening sequence of Pitch Black, the “Burn” scene from The Crow (which not only turns 30 this year, but is also getting a new adaptation), the farmhouse raid and ending chase sequences in High Tension, and the climactic moments in the 1989 creature feature comedy Little Monsters, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series...

While it can be difficult for horror sequels to live up to the legacy of the original, many were better than expected in hindsight. Jaws 2 was the perfect example of a great horror movie whose reputation was tarnished by the iconic nature of the original. Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice captured the eerie essence of it's source material and deserved to be reappraised by modern audiences.

Former child actor and Jaws 2 star Marc Gilpin has passed away.

Per People, it's been reported that Gilpin died on Saturday in Dallas following a battle with gliobastoma, a form of brain cancer. He'd first been diagnosed last year, which resulted in loved ones setting up a GoFundMe to help pay for mounting medical expenses. According to the fundraiser description, there were two tumors found in Gilpin's brain, and one could not be physically removed due to its location. After a new growth was found in April, Gilpin began stronger chemotherapy treatments before ultimately losing his battle this past weekend. He was 56 years old.

Fans have been celebrating the 45th anniversary of the release of Jaws 2 (watch it Here), with Universal Pictures marking the anniversary by giving the film a 4K Uhd release last month. But now the anniversary has a sadness to it, as it has been announced that actor Marc Gilpin, who played little Sean Brody in the movie, has passed away at the too-young age of 56, following a long battle with glioblastoma. His passing has been confirmed by his sister Peri Gilpin, an actress best known for playing the character Roz on the sitcom Frasier.

Marc Gilpin was born in Austin, Texas on September 26, 1966. His acting career started soon after, as he landed a role in a nationwide commercial for Exxon when he was just four years old. From there he appeared in an episode of the TV series Thunder and was cast in the title role of the family-friendly sci-fi comedy Where’s Willie?...

Peri Gilpin, known for her role as Roz Doyle in “Frasier,” announced that her older brother had passed on Saturday following a long battle with glioblastoma.

Gilpin played Sean Brody in 1978’s “Jaws 2.” He starred alongside Roy Scheider as Brody, Lorraine Gary as Brody’s wife Ellen and his sister, April Gilpin.

Unlike the original seaside horror movie, “Jaws 2” heavily featured the chief’s two kids, Sean and Mike (Mark Gruner). While another great white shark is loose around Amity Island, Mike takes his little brother on an ill-fated boating trip. Brody is once again forced to face off against a dangerous killer, this time to save his sons.

Marc Gilpin, the child actor who played a son of Roy Scheider’s Police Chief Martin Brody in 1978’s Jaws 2, died Saturday in Dallas of the aggressive brain cancer glioblastoma. He was 56.

His death was announced by his sister, the Frasier actor Peri Gilpin.

Marc Gilpin, born in Austin, Texas, had already appeared in commercials, the Saturday morning NBC series Thunder (1977) and, in 1978, the film Where’s Willy? when, at 11, he was cast in director Jeannot Szwarc’s sequel to Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster Jaws. While Scheider and Lorraine Gary reprised their roles as Brody and wife Ellen, the young actors playing the characters’ two sons in the original film, Chris Rebello and Jay Mello, had outgrown the roles and were replaced by Mark Gruner (as elder son Mike) and Gilpin (as Sean).

Gilpin died Saturday in Dallas after a long battle with glioblastoma, his older sister, Frasier actress Peri Gilpin, announced.

After answering a casting call, Gilpin beat out hundreds of other boys to get hired as Sean Brody in the 1978 sequel to the blockbuster Jaws (1975), directed by Steven Spielberg. He was 11 when the movie reached theaters.

Jaws 2 was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. Lorraine Gary returned as Chief Brody’s wife, but their sons, Michael and Sean, portrayed by Chris Rebello and Jay Mello in the original, were replaced by Mark Gruner and Gilpin in the second film.

A year later, Gilpin guest-starred on NBC’s CHiPs and appeared with his younger sister, April, on ABC’s Fantasy Island. In 1981, he was in the films The Legend of the Long Ranger and Earthbound.

2023 marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Jaws 2 (watch it Here), the most well-regarded of the Jaws sequels – and Universal is celebrating the occasion by giving the film a 4K Uhd release! 2023 marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Jaws 2 (watch it Here), the most well-regarded of the Jaws sequels. So it seems quite appropriate that a cool Jaws 2 discovery had been made this year: The Daily Jaws has found a long-lost scene from the film, and the only known footage of this scene comes from a Brazilian VHS! This leads me to believe that the scene was probably always included in the Brazilian home video release of Jaws 2, but that’s not completely clear from the report on The Daily Jaws.

What we do know is that Jaws 2 begins with a pair of divers being attacked by a shark while checking out the sunken wreckage of the Orca boat from the first movie. Creepy kids, am I right? The horror landscape has been littered with them as far back as The Bad Seed (1956). Every once in awhile TV too would trot out the killer tots in hopes of alluring viewers with no-good imps and smiling, murderous waifs. One such early effort is A Little Game (1971), an ABC Movie of the Week thriller that leans heavily on the psychology behind stepparent-child relations.

Originally broadcast on Saturday, October 30th, A Little Game faced off against the Top Ten rated The Mary Tyler Moore Show on CBS and the NBC Saturday Night at the Movies, but held its own due to the already strong ABC brand. The TV movie at this point was a staple of their network, and A Little Game adds the luster it was accumulating.
