Sequels are practically as old as cinema, with the very first thought to be The Fall of a Nation (1916), a cheapie knockoff/follow-up to the incredibly racist The Birth of a Nation from a year earlier. Ever since Hollywood has been keen to cash-in on sequels and ongoing sagas. Before the term “movie franchise” was even a glint in a studio executive’s eye, MGM was churning out high-quality Thin Man movies at MGM throughout the 1930s and ‘40s while Universal was introducing us to both Dracula’s Daughter (1936) and Son of Frankenstein (1939). One must wonder why the studio never got those two crazy kids together.

And yet, while sequels have been around forever, they’ve generally been seen as lesser-than until recently. By their nature, sequels are derivative, and there have been many filmmakers who were all too happy to embrace sameness while filling their working hours before and after lunch.

Gayson’s Twitter account posted the news, writing that she was “an amazing lady who left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She will be very much missed.”

Gayson played Sylvia Trench in the 1962 “James Bond” franchise starter “Dr. No,” starring Sean Connery as Bond. She first asked Bond for his name at a card table, resulting in the iconic, “Bond. James Bond.” She reprised her role as Trench in “From Russia With Love.”

Last night Cinema Retro attended the world premiere of Everything Or Nothing: The Untold Story of OO7 in London. Bond alumni were out in force as many faces from in front and behind the camera attended the Leicester Square screening. The film was followed by a fascinating Q&A with Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli, Steven Saltzman and Hilary Saltzman. They spoke affectionately about growing up together on the set of the early Bond movies, as well as the challenges faced by their fathers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman in bringing and keeping James Bond on the screen. They were joined by director Stevan Riley who discussed the daunting task of navigating a story through 60 years of Bond heritage.

The James Bond franchise turns 50 this year and with the 23rd Bond film Skyfall set to open on 26th October in the UK and on 9th November in North America, what better a time to reflect on 22 films and 50 years of Bond history?

It is for good reason that James Bond is considered a British treasure – almost escaping the boundaries of fiction to exist in a near-regal status to the extent that he was included in the Opening Ceremony for this year’s London Olympics alongside the Queen herself. Over those 22 films, the character has gone through various physical changes, moving away from the self-conscious camp of former versions to the grittier, darker Bond that we currently have with Daniel Craig.

But one thing has always remained – that unquantifiable cool factor that makes Bond one of the most enduring and recognisable figures from the glorious and colourful history of cinema.

London, September 22: Three of Bond's love interests from the 60's and 70's got together at Stoke Park, Bucks, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first 007 movie.

The former Bond girls, Tania Mallet, Eunice Gayson and Britt Ekland made their appearance at the event, where scenes from both 'Goldfinger' and 'Tomorrow Never Dies' were filmed.

James Bond star Sir Roger Moore set the digital timer on a golden briefcase - containing the first copy of the Bond 50 Blu-ray collection - which is now travelling the length of Great Britain.

To mark the golden anniversary of James Bond on film, an Aston Martin Dbs featured in 2008's Quantum of Solace is taking the briefcase on a seven-day, 900-mile journey.

Moore said at the launch: "I'm delighted to launch this Aston Martin on its tour of Great Britain with its special golden cased cargo, marking 50 years of 007 movies and the release of all 22 films on Blu-ray"

The Bond 50 Blu-ray collection is available from September 24, 2012.

The case is also being carried by other 007 icons including Bond girls Britt Ekland, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallet and Eunice Gayson, classic villain Richard Kiel (the metal-mouthed Jaws), costume designer Lindy Hemming, stunt co-ordinator Paul Weston and director John Glen.

Some of the biggest stars from the James Bond films are to take part in a golden anniversary celebration of the series.

Former Bond Sir Roger Moore, Richard "Jaws" Kiel and Britt Eckland, who played Mary Goodnight in The Man with the Golden Gun, will carry a gold case containing the first box set of all 22 Bond films on Blu-ray as it travels the length of Britain in 007's Aston Martin Dbs.

The silver sports car was one of the originals featured in the last Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

The case will tour memorable locations in the UK from Monday until 24 September, retracing the spy's steps from the highlands of Wester Ross and Argyll (The World Is Not Enough and From Russia with Love) to the Eden Project in Cornwall (Die Another Day...

Producers behind the popular 007 series have declared 5 October Global James Bond Day to mark 50 years since the release of Sir Sean Connery's first turn as the superspy in 1962's Dr. No.

A number of events have been planned to mark the occasion, including exhibitions across the world and a live concert in Los Angeles, and now it has emerged some of the franchise's stars will embark on a tour across the U.K.

The 50th anniversary of the James Bond film series got off the grid yesterday (Sun 15th) with the official launch of 'Bond in Motion: 50 Vehicles, 50 Years', an exhibition of OO7-related vehicles at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu in Hampshire. To commemorate this historic turning point in the Bond franchise, Eon Productions (the Bond film-makers) and the motor museum (celebrating its 40th anniversary this year), have put together the largest official collection of famous James Bond vehicles the world has ever seen.

Sunday also saw Eon kick-start the 50th anniversary with many special features in British newspapers and magazine supplements including The Mail on Sunday and The Sunday Mirror.

As James Bond prepares for his 23rd official outing in Skyfall and to mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time I have been tasked to take a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.

Ian Fleming died just one month before the release of the third James Bond film, Goldfinger in August 1964. Even though both Dr. No and From Russia With Love had been successful and well received it was not until Goldfinger that James Bond truly became a worldwide phenomenon and it is a tragedy that Fleming never lived to see the full impact his creation had on popular culture.

Following the huge success of the first James Bond film Dr. No, producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were keen to start production on a follow-up. With United Artists offering the pair $2 million, double the budget of Dr. No, to quickly get a sequel in the works Broccoli and Saltzman were left to decide which of Fleming’s novels to adapt next.

In an interview with Life magazine the then Us President John F. Kennedy had mentioned the Bond novel From Russia With Love in a list of his top ten favourite books.

Last night at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, BAFTA paid tribute to the production designer Sir Ken Adam, who turned 90 last year. Sponsored by the Albert R. Broccoli and Dana Broccoli Foundation, guests enjoyed a champagne reception followed by the event which was hosted by Matthew Sweet who introduced the many guests who took to the stage and honoured the great designer. Among them; Christiane Kubrick, Michael G. Wilson, Nicholas Meyer, Anouk Aimee, Peter Lamont, Sir Christopher Frayling, and Lewis Gilbert to name but a few. Actress Eunice Gayson read out a very funny letter on behalf of Sir Roger Moore, who was unable to attend, and current-day production designers praised Sir Ken Adam for inspiring them to enter the film business.
