How Cobra Kai's Creators Wanted Hilary Swank's Julie Pierce To Return
Image
"Cobra Kai" did the two things every legacy sequel needs to do — it effectively rebooted the franchise with a fresh new cast that grew to be as memorable and likable as the original, fitting both the archetypes of the original cast while being new and unique characters. Miguel Díaz (Xolo Maridueña) and Robbie Keane (Tanner Buchanan) started off as sort of reverse Daniel and Johnny, but they ended up becoming so much more in the course of the show.

And yet, the show also managed to be a rather incredible continuation of the original "Karate Kid" trilogy. Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) became a much more nuanced character, a flawed individual with insecurities and who grows over time, while Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) turned from a simplistic antagonist, a teen bully, into a complex three-dimensional character who made mistakes and tries to be better slowly. Indeed, "Cobra Kai" shone when it came to reintroducing villains,...

VFX and Animation Studio Cinesite Raises $215 Million On the Heels of Technicolor Collapse
Image
The Cinesite group, a global visual effects and animation studio collectives, has raised $215 million through a series of transactions “to support its continued operations, technological innovation and strategic expansion” during a turbulent time for the VFX industry that in recent weeks saw the collapse of VFX giant Mpc and its parent company Technicolor.

NatWest Corporate Bank led the financing of the Cinesite investment, alongside the studio’s existing banks Barclays and Santander. Shareholder Gryphion was also cited in the announcement.

Established in 1991 and headquartered in London, Cinesite maintains studios in London, Montreal, and Vancouver. The Cinesite Group also includes Image Engine, Trixter, Imaginarium Studios, L’Atelier Animation, FX3X, Assemblage Entertainment, and Squeeze Animation.

The VFX industry has struggled in recent years and last month saw the sudden collapse of Technicolor, which was the parent for VFX giant Mpc, commercial VFX studio The Mill and Mirkros Animation. Just this week, UK-headquartered VFX...

Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 Finally Delivers The Karate Kid Reference It's Been Missing
Image
The past 15 years or so have been dominated by legacy sequels, movies that bring back beloved franchises with stories that land somewhere between a reboot, a sequel, and a remake. Out of the bunch, "Cobra Kai" is one of the best ones. From the moment the first season premiered on the defunct YouTube Red platform, "Cobra Kai" has managed to excel at being not only a continuation of Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka) story on top of a reboot following a new generation of kids but also a rather good pseudo-remake of the original "Karate Kid" movies.

After all, the story of Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) heavily echoed that of Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) in the first film, but with a twist. Like Daniel, Miguel is a new kid in town who learns karate to defend himself from bullies and gain self-confidence, enters a tournament, and uses a crane kick to...

Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 Kills Off Two Major Karate Kid Characters In One Fell Swoop
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Cobra Kai" Season 6 Part 3.

Have you ever wondered why karate seems to be the be-all and end-all for most "Cobra Kai" characters -- even ones who don't seem all that interested in spending their lives as a competitive athlete? The show's final block of episodes examines this question on many fronts, as some characters embrace the martial art as a proper calling and others set out to explore other avenues of life. However, no two characters' arcs depict the fallout of an obsessive karate life better than those of John Kreese (Martin Kove) and Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), two villains who have been part of the franchise since the original "The Karate Kid" trilogy.

Kreese and Silver are the franchise's greatest antagonists by a wide margin, but their different teaching methods and clashes over Cobra Kai's direction send them on a collision course not...

'It Wasn't Just Random Stuff': Skeleton Crew's Easter Eggs Hidden Within Giant Crab Monster Revealed
Image
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew's newest extraterrestrial antagonist carried many references on its back, literally.

In a new behind-the-scenes video on X, Tippett Studio's Art Director and Fabrication Supervisor Mark Dubeau broke down the process of creating the giant trash crab Tet'niss that Wim and Kb encounter on the planet Lanupa. As he recalled, Lucasfilm vice president Doug Chiang "basically said to me like, 'Okay, it's a giant kind of crab monster, it puts stuff on its back.' I really wanted to make sure that when we were putting the junk on it, it wasn't just random stuff. I actually tried to use as many little bits from model kits that were used on the original films." These included miniature models of R2-D2, C-3Po, and K-2So, additionally revealing that the crab was brought to life using stop-motion reminiscent of Phil Tippett's work on the original Star Wars trilogy.

The Trash Monster in 'Skeleton Crew' Includes Incredible 'Star Wars' Easter Eggs
Image
Episode 6 of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is now streaming on Disney+ and sees the introduction of a new trash monster dubbed Tet’niss. A practical model of the crab-like creature created by Og Star Wars associates Tippett Studios contains several Easter eggs from the previous movies that fans will find very interesting.

Skeleton Crew co-creators Jon Watts and Chris Ford tapped Tippett Studios to fashion the practical models in the new series. The effects house was founded by Star Wars legend Phil Tippett and responsible for creating the iconic Rancor in Return of the Jedi and the At-at walkers in The Empire Strikes Back. A return to practical models — a fitting aesthetic for the retro Skeleton Crew — has fans excited.

Among the new monsters is Tet’niss, a clever moniker for a creature that builds its shell with sharp and rusty refuse. But calling its components trash is a tongue-in-cheek...

Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 2 Sneakily Killed Off A Karate Kid Character
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Cobra Kai" season 6 part 2.

"Cobra Kai" season 6 part 2 confirms that Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) is the "Karate Kid" franchise's biggest villain. After avoiding jail time for his previous misdemeanors, Silver's out to get revenge against Miyagi-Do and John Kreese (Martin Kove) for their role in his downfall -- and he's brought back some blasts from the past. Still, don't expect Snake (Jonathan Avildsen), one of Silver's henchmen in "The Karate Kid Part III," to participate in his reign of terror. The season 6 episode "Blood In Blood Out" quietly confirms that Snake's dead, and Silver ought to learn a lesson from his passing.

The episode in question features a flashback scene with Silver and his attorney. Fearing that his client will continue to go down a dark path, the legal representative says, "I just don't want to see you go on a downward spiral...

The Latest Karate Kid Cameo Makes It So Much Weirder That Cobra Kai Hasn't Brought Back Hilary Swank's Julie Pierce
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Cobra Kai season 6, part 2!Hilary Swank made her franchise debut in 1994's The Next Karate Kid as Julie Pierce, and despite spending the movie as the title character, she has yet to join her fellow Karate Kid alums in Cobra Kai. Instead, an incredibly minor star from the original trilogy has managed to pull off a franchise comeback before Swank. As such, Julie is still the biggest Karate Kid character yet to appear in Netflix's legacy spinoff show, and another cameo perhaps makes it even less likely to happen when Cobra Kai season 6 concludes on February 13, 2025.

Of all the Karate Kid movies, Swank's lone installment is the most maligned. It bombed at the box office and currently has an embarrassing rating of just 7% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the questionable quality of the other Karate Kid movies hasn't prevented other legacy actors from coming back to reprise their roles.

Cobra Kai Confirms The Death Of A Missing Karate Kid Character
Image
Cobra Kai season 6 has quietly confirmed that a long-missing character from The Karate Kid movies won't be making an appearance in the series. Snake, a character Daniel Larusso encountered in The Karate Kid Part III, seemingly died sometime before the events of the show's final season. In the 1989 movie, Snake was played by Jonathan Avildsen.

Since season 4, the series has been pulling heavily from the third of the five Karate Kid movies. It made the film's villain, Terry Silver, a cornerstone of its fourth and fifth seasons. It also gave a guest appearance to the movie's main female character, Jessica Andrews, in season 5. Meanwhile, Mike Barnes - Daniel's nemesis in The Karate Kid Part III - has now been in three episodes, including the Cobra Kai season 5 finale. The show's connections to the movie extended further in Cobra Kai season 6 part 2, which added one more returning character - and ruled out another.

Who Is De Guzman? Cobra Kai's Mystery Karate Kid Fighter Explained
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Cobra Kai season 6 part 2

Referred to as "Mr. De Guzman," in Cobra Kai, a mysterious, tattooed martial artist was introduced as an old adversary of Daniel Larusso's. Among the many surprises in Cobra Kai season 6 part 2 was the re-emergence of Terry Silver as the benefactor of the Iron Dragons and Sensei Wolf. As it turns out, Sensei Wolf is not the only ally Terry Silver had procured ahead of the Sekai Taikai tournament. Apparently, the character who fought Daniel outside the cages was a henchman hired by Silver. And what's more, he's actually a returning character from The Karate Kid movies.

Played by William Christopher Ford, De Guzman joined a growing list of legacy Karate Kid characters to have their stories continued in the Netflix sequel series. His role also highlights the deepening influence that The Karate Kid III in particular has had on the series. Much like Mike Barnes,...

‘Cobra Kai’ Spoilers: Here’s How That ‘Karate Kid III’ Cameo & Silver’s Shocking Return Came to Be
Image
At the end of Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1, it looked like there was just one major antagonist left for our heroes to deal with — assuming they could put their own differences aside to survive the Sekai Taikai, that is — with things finally coming to a head with John Kreese (Martin Kove). In Part 2, though, we quickly learn just how wrong that is. In Episode 8, “Snakes on a Plane,” Daniel learns that the “thug” who was sent to kidnap him wasn’t just a minion of Sensei Wolf (Lewis Tan) — he’s also a henchman of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), who returns in a familiar scene: a steaming hottub, just like fans will remember him lounging in Karate Kid III. And that henchman has a familiar story as well. He’s Dennis de Guzman (portrayed by William Christopher Ford), one of Silver’s bullies who attacked Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) at Mr.

‘Star Wars’ Series ‘Skeleton Crew,’ Shonda Rhimes’ White House Drama ‘The Residence,’ & Robert Downey Jr’s ‘The Sympathizer’ Adaptation Awarded Big CA Tax Credits
Image
There’s going to be some serious California financial meat on the bones of Star War series Skeleton Crew.

Hauling in a near-record 20.9 million in Golden State tax incentives, the Disney+ series starring Jude Law was among seven shows awarded lucrative credits today. As you can see in the list below, the 2023-premiering Skeleton Crew was joined by high-profile including Shonda Rhimes’ White House drama The Residence for Netflix, Robert Downey Jr’s adaption of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Sympathizer for HBO.

Along with the millions handed out in the latest round of the nearly decade-long revitalized incentive program, there are two relocating series. Both HBO’s about-to-premiere Rap Sh!t from Issa Rae and Peacock/Universal TV’s Killing It were given tax credits in anticipation of moves from Florida and Louisiana, respectively. Rap Sh!t has yet to be greenlighted for Season 2, but successful...

Cobra Kai Season 4 Ending Explained
Martin Kove
This article contains Cobra Kai spoilers

Cobra Kai has mastered the season finale cliffhanger just like Daniel-san mastered ‘wax on, wax off.’ It started with its first season finale. That ended with the startling appearance of Sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove), which took the series to a whole new level. The season 2 finale literally tossed us off that cliff with Miguel’s (Xolo Maridueña) spine-breaking fall. And in the finale of season 3, Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) are forced to unite for the ultimate showdown against Cobra Kai in the arena that started it all, the All Valley Karate Tournament.

Keeping up the pace, the ending of season 4 delivers several rapid-fire twists and spinning kicks, setting the stage for the inevitable season 5. As expected, season 4 culminated at the nefarious All Valley Karate Tournament. The competition was packed with so many changes of heart: Daniel and Johnny reconciling after their turbulent failure to cooperate,...

Cobra Kai Season 4: What to Expect
Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Mary Mouser, Peyton List, Jacob Bertrand, Tanner Buchanan, Gianni DeCenzo, and Xolo Maridueña in Cobra Kai (2018)
This article contains Cobra Kai season 3 spoilers.

“Hey. Long time,” Kreese (Martin Kove) says at the end of Cobra Kai season 3 when he calls someone mysteriously, as if to ask a favor. Now just who could it be?

The most likely candidate is Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), Kreese’s war buddy and the main villain from The Karate Kid Part III. Season 3 of Cobra Kai explored Kreese’s backstory, adding credence to this postulation. We see Young Kreese’s (Barrett Carnahan) traumatic experience as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, and how he saved his friend that he nicknamed Twig (Nick Marini). It’s implied that Twig is Silver. In The Karate Kid Part III, Silver was a rich CEO of DynaTox Industries, an unscrupulous nuclear waste disposal company. He helped to fund the Cobra Kai schools and was a major sponsor of the All-Valley Karate Tournament. Since the...
