Delivering the news that Ben Marshall is joining the Saturday Night Live cast — with no more Please Don’t Destroy digital shorts as a result — must have been “fucking awkward,” David Spade said this week on the Fly on the Wall podcast.
“It’s just weird,” agreed Dana Carvey. “It’s like the Three Stooges and they take Moe Howard, but Shemp doesn't get anything.”
Another way of looking at it: The idea that Lorne Michaels raids comedy troupes and cherry-picks the best talent isn’t weird at all. After all, it’s something he’s been doing since the very first days of Saturday Night Live. Here are five...

This article contains spoilers for Happy Gilmore 2.
The newly-released Happy Gilmore 2 features the return of several familiar characters, but sadly, a number of cast members from the original movie have passed away in recent years — from Carl Weathers (who played Happy’s mentor Chubbs), to Joe Flaherty (who played Shooter McGavin’s creepy superfan), to Morris the alligator (who played the alligator).
Then there’s Bob Barker. The Price Is Right host famously played himself in Happy Gilmore, brawling with Happy in what was arguably the most memorable scene in the movie. While bringing Barker back for the sequel likely would have been a no-brainer, unfortunately he died in 2023 at the age of 99 (without going over).
Incidentally, anyone interested in seeing a rematch between Barker and Adam Sandler might want to check out this video from Comedy Central’s 2015 Night of Too Many Stars.

Warning: Contains spoilers.
Happy Gilmore 2 is, among other things, a chosen-family reunion. Virtually every living star from the original makes it into the sequel. Even those who’ve died still make their presence felt, either because we meet their descendants (as with characters played by Joe Flaherty and Richard Kiel), or because they’ve been buried in the same cemetery, or both (Carl Weathers). It’s nice that everyone got to hang out again, but dozens of characters, old and new, have to compete so hard for screen time that I didn’t get nearly enough Christopher McDonald.
If you pay even a little attention to screen performers, you probably have an unofficial list of the character actors you’re consistently delighted to see pop up in a show or film. By the time McDonald showed up in Happy Gilmore, he was a firm favorite for me from his...

Plot: Twenty-nine years after winning his first Tour Championship, retired golfer Happy Gilmore returns to the sport to pay for his daughter Vienna’s ballet school.
Review (Warning: contains mild spoilers): When Happy Gilmore hit theaters in 1996, I was a dumb high schooler who had loved the idiocy of Adam Sandler’s Billy Madison and hoped for more of the sophomoric shenanigans that film delivered. Reteaming with Billy Madison co-writer Tim Herlihy, Happy Gilmore was a hilariously stupid sports movie with Sandler’s trademark yelling and bizarre jokes wrapped in an underdog tale. Naming his production company after his first two hit films, Adam Sandler has gone on to make dozens of similar movies interspersed with acclaimed movies like Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems. It’s no surprise that Kyle Newacheck’s much-anticipated sequel to Dennis Dugan’s early Adam Sandler comedy classic “Happy Gilmore” opens on something of a down beat. After all, every good comeback story — a designation by which “Happy Gilmore 2” definitely qualifies — has to find our hero at some sort of crossroads, but damn if the film doesn’t kick off with a pretty audacious bummer. It’s not to be spoiled here, but believe us, Happy (Sandler) really needs a win, and there’s something impressive about Sandler and Tim Herlihy’s script using that as a jumping-off point.
The film’s opening moments zip through the highs and lows of Happy’s life since we last left him, from his continued success in both golf and sponsorship opportunities (that he started stumping for Trojan condoms after having four sons in a row with his wife is a...

It’s about damn time—Happy Gilmore 2 is knocking at our doors, with its release date scheduled for tomorrow, July 25, 2025, on Netflix. And guess what? Fans of the original 1996 comedy are beyond excited. After all, Adam Sandler is returning as the hilarious and hot-headed golfer, Happy Gilmore.
Meanwhile, apart from Sandler’s titular role, the sequel is also bringing back some familiar faces like Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit and Christopher McDonald as the always-annoying Shooter McGavin. And this time, the story will follow an older Happy Gilmore trying to re-earn his respect in golf history.
Now, while the story promises to be full of laughs and nostalgia, we’re sorry to inform you that not everyone from the original movie will be coming back. Some beloved characters won’t return, either because the actors have sadly passed away or have simply stepped away from acting.

Nearly 30 years later, Adam Sandler‘s cult classic Happy Gilmore 2 is hitting the screen again, along with a star-studded cast. Fans have already spotted some popular faces in the trailer, and Eminem is one of them. Yes, Eminem does appear in Happy Gilmore 2. The movie is fast approaching on Netflix on July 25. Adam Sandler has confirmed Eminem’s cameo in an interview on the Dan Patrick Show in December 2024. He said,

On February 16, 1996, Universal Pictures introduced Happy Gilmore to audiences. The Adam Sandler starrer went on to gross $41 million and became a cable TV perennial enroute to its belated Netflix sequel in 2025. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
After his lame, infantile Billy Madison, hopes weren’t exactly high for Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore, which makes the end result all the more satisfying. Sandler’s second effort, about a hot-tempered hockey player who swaps his slap shot for long drives and earns himself a berth on the pro golf tour, is amicable entertainment.
A funny golf flick worthy of comparison with Caddyshack, the Universal release packs a goofy charm and should be on course to hit the boxoffice green as long as potential fans don’t view Sandler’s previous outing as too much of a handicap.

Just tap it in…We’re just one week away from the release of Happy Gilmore 2, bringing everyone’s favorite short-tempered golfer back to the green. While we can expect much of the same style of humor and plenty of callbacks, there had to be a number of alterations, a key one of which centers around Chubbs, played by Carl Weathers, who passed away in 2024 just a few months before Happy Gilmore 2 was confirmed. So what was the plan for Chubbs?
Adam Sandler recently sat down with Collider to discuss how the death of Carl Weathers impacted the development of the Happy Gilmore 2 script. “We had a painful change. Happy Gilmore 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the cult-classic '90s golf comedy, is heading back out onto the green with several stars from the original film (and a few newcomers). However, Adam Sandler, who is reprising his titular role, will be taking a big swing without his mentor this time, as Carl Weathers, the actor who portrayed former pro golfer Derick "Chubbs" Peterson in the first movie, sadly passed away in February 2024, shortly before filming on the Netflix feature commenced in September, resulting in a "painful change" to the script.
Sandler recently opened up about the "massive part" that Weathers was set to play in Happy Gilmore 2 prior to his death, and the rewrites that were required amid those sad circumstances. "We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part," Sandler revealed in an interview with Collider. "I would talk to Carl, and we were excited,...

Good news for fans of Adam Sandler and/or Subway collector’s cups, we’re less than two weeks away from the return of Happy Gilmore. Netflix’s highly-anticipated Happy Gilmore 2 will obviously be bringing back a number of the original’s supporting cast members, including Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller and, to her great surprise, Julie Bowen. But unfortunately, not everyone made it to the year 2025.
Tim Herlihy, who co-scripted both the first movie and the sequel, recently guested on Andy Richter’s podcast The Three Questions, and pointed out that several actors from Og cast aren’t in the movie for the most depressing reason. “Sadly a lot of the cast has passed away,” Herlihy noted, first pointing out that Happy’s one-time bare-knuckle boxing opponent Bob Barker died in 2023 at the age of 99.

When John Candy was a newcomer at Second City in Chicago in 1973, he was paired with another rookie comedian. “I started the same day as John Candy,” said Bill Murray on The Tonight Show last year. Candy and Murray on the same stage? Sounds terrific — but Murray says it was anything but.
“We were both terrible,” he confessed. “We were both lousy, and no one would work with us. So it was just Candy and I looking at each other like, ‘I guess it’s us again, you know?’”
That was the year when the Second City cast was known as the Seven Giant Goyim because every cast member was a Gentile more than six feet tall, according to The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray. The other five giants wanted nothing to do with Murray and Candy, at least according to Murray, leading to their frequent collabs.

Adult animation isn’t something that gets talked about enough. Paving the way for today’s movie were things like Fritz the Cat, Lord of the Rings which is not expressly adult of course, and Wizards. Let us know if we should talk about Wizards in some form by the way. Other movies that firmly tie into a similar vein of Heavy Metal are American Pop from the same year and Fire and Ice from a couple years later. While a bunch of the animated movies listed or even not listed fall under the sex comedy, fantasy, or recreation of modern life, Heavy Metal is something else entirely. It’s an anthology sci-fi, horror, comedy, action, fantasy that has a rocking soundtrack and earns its hard R rating. It was held back from being on video for a while due to licensing issues but has become an endearing cult classic 44 years later.

Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2 sees Adam Sandler's titular character return to the golf course, bringing his unusual brand of shenanigans while proving his game is still in full swing. Though the sequel has lots to live up to, another returning star believes Sandler and the cast have "outdone themselves" with the anticipated follow-up.

Martin Short is one of the most beloved comedians in the world. Who doesn’t love characters like Jiminy Glick, Nathan Thurm and Ed Grimley? You know, other than that one guy.
But despite his comedy icon status, Short’s cinematic efforts haven’t always gone over too well with film critics. For example, Three Amigos was panned when it first came out. And Jiminy Glick in Lalawood was rated about as highly as a fungal infection – even though it features the best ever David Lynch performance by someone who isn’t actually David Lynch.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Short was asked about how it feels to make a movie that “did not necessarily hit in the moment.” Short explained that, while it may be “a drag” to get bad reviews, it’s “only really a drag if you think the film’s not very good. Then you feel (like), ‘Oh,...

Happy Gilmore returns! After almost 30 years, Adam Sandler returns to the green (and wields his unorthodox swing) in a new look at the long-awaited comedy sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Coming to Netflix 2025, the follow-up will find Sandler back as one of his most beloved characters, the ice hockey player-turned-golfer with severe anger issues as he faces off once again with his arch-rival, Christopher McDonald’s Shooter McGavin. You can check out this latest look at Happy Gilmore 2, courtesy of the "Next on Netflix" event, below.
Released way back in 1996, the first Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and the late, great Carl Weathers, and follows an unsuccessful ice hockey player with a red-hot temper, Happy, who discovers a newfound talent for golf. While the first movie was met with a mixed response upon release, it has since garnered a cult following, with many excited to see...

Travis Kelce is not only making another Super Bowl run with the Kansas City Chiefs in hopes of a three-peat but is also racking up his acting credits.
The NFL star is set to make an appearance opposite Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 and recently opened up about what it was like to work with the comedian.
“That was a dream come true,” Kelce said on The Pat McAfee Show. I thought SNL was going to be the peak of my acting and showman or entertainment career … working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain.”
He continued, “They’re so professional and yet so fun to work with. I felt like I was working with like the Andy Reid of the acting world. [Sandler] is every bit as cool off the screen as he is on the screen. That was a dream come true.

It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since Freaks and Geeks aired on NBC. The show featured a fantastic cast, touching, realistic writing, terrific music, and an almost unforgivable short run.
Many of the young cast members went on to have excellent careers despite NBC's pitiful treatment of the show. Stars like James Franco, Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Phillips, John Francis Daly, and Martin Star have all enjoyed robust careers in Hollywood. Shia Labeouf, Rashida Jones, Lizzy Caplan, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Ben Foster, Amy Aquino, Samaire Armstrong, Stephanie Erb, Leslie Mann, Kevin Corrigan, David Krumholtz, Jason Schwartzman, Matt Czuchy, and Mike White are just some of the talent that appeared in the shows all too brief run.
While 18 episodes were made, NBC only aired 15 of them, even banning one of them completely. The network never realized the greatest it had on its hands, and it canceled the...

I remember the day -- March 4, 1994 -- when I learned that John Candy, big of heart and large of funny bone, had died from an apparent heart attack at age 43. I was a movie critic and a film writer in the Life section of USA Today, distracted by the Winter Olympics TV coverage of Nancy Kerrigan’s silver medal comeback. But the minute I heard that one of the warmest and funniest actors around had passed away, I poured myself immediately into writing his appreciation.
As someone who grew up in Buffalo, I was lucky to have early access to “Sctv,” the Canadian sketch-comedy counterpart to “Saturday Night Live,” long before the series was picked up by NBC. I was cued into the genius of Candy and his clowning cohorts Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as they inhabited sundry out-sized characters who...

John Candy was one of the most beloved comedians of the 1980s and 1990s who had plenty of incredibly underrated movies that didnt get enough love. While the late actor died tragically young at age 43, this was not before leaving the world with some of the most iconic comedic performances ever put to the screen in classics like Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck. However, for every legendary Candy performance, there was another hidden gem that, despite being equally hilarious, failed to gain the same lasting legacy as his best-known work.
The best John Candy movies included acclaimed collaborations with comedy greats like Steve Martin, Bill Murray, and Mel Brooks, although lesser-known releases also paired him with the likes of Tom Hanks, Dan Aykroyd, and Richard Pryor. While some underrated movies suffered from lackluster screenplays, Candys vulnerable sincerity and likable comedic charm helped elevate them into solid comedies. There...

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards may be over, but complaining about the Emmy Awards is only just beginning.
It’s not uncommon for awards ceremonies’ In Memoriam segments, which honor deceased members of the industry, to tick off viewers. Such as how this year’s Oscars ceremony controversially lumped together a bunch of illegible names in the final moments of the In Memoriam, and also featured a “distracting” interpretive dance number.
Last night’s Emmys’ In Memoriam paid homage to late TV stars like Bob Newhart, Richard Simmons and Shannen Doherty, but it also omitted some major names. Some were confused as to why Matthew Perry didn’t appear, forgetting that this was actually the second Emmy ceremony of the year. Perry was honored during the delayed 74th Emmys, which aired back in January.
But the Emmys are now taking heat for leaving out some notable figures, including Erica Ash,...

As is tradition, the Primetime Emmy Awards honored a variety of television stars who'd passed away with an "In Memoriam" segment. However, some viewers were quick to call out some notable names that were missing.
The segment featured the rapper Jelly Roll performing a live rendition of "I Am Not Okay." Also featured was a montage that showed the names and images of actors, producers, and other big names who'd been a part of the television industry. Some of those honored included James Earl Jones, who just passed away at the age of 93, along with Chance Perdomo, Donald Sutherland, Carl Weathers, Shannen Doherty, and more.

The In Memoriam segment on Sunday night’s Emmy telecast paid respects to Shannen Doherty, Chance Perdomo, Martin Mull, Richard Lewis and many more TV luminaries lost in the past eight months.
Shelley Duvall and Sctv cast member Joe Flaherty, however, were two notable omissions from the revamped annual fixture of the telecast.
Duvall, though perhaps best known for her film work with major directors including Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick, had a long and substantial TV career and was a two-time Emmy nominee. She created and produced a number of enduring shows, including Faerie Tale Theatre and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories. Duvall died in July at 75.
Flaherty died in April at 82. His absence from the Emmy segment was awkward given that one of his Sctv costars, Eugene Levy, co-hosted the telecast and another, Martin Short, was a nominee and presenter.

Omg, it's finally happened.
Adam Sandler fans are getting a Happy Gilmore 2, nearly 30 years in the making.
The sequel of the 1996 hit comedy is a dual project between Netflix and Happy Madison Productions, Sandler's company.
Sandler hooked a generation of viewers with his crass, blue-collar character infiltrating one of the most white-collar sports.
With his anger management issues and working-class mannerisms, we felt like he was one of us. And we couldn't help but root for him to win.
Happy Gilmore couldn't cut it as a hockey player, but it turned out he was hellah good at golf -- with a custom hockey stick golf club.
And fans loved him, turning golf into a spectator sport that drew all the wrong crowds.
At least, that's how Shooter McGavin -- played by Christopher McDonald -- felt. He tried so hard to earn that gold jacket, only to lose it to a scuzzy amateur golfer wannabe.

The actor is just one of those rare comedic talents giving back-to-back hits, which make the audience laugh their heads off. Throughout his stellar acting career, Sandler has done a ton of films, but his most popular film would be Happy Gilmore.

A sequel to Happy Gilmore is officially coming to Netflix.
The streamer officially announced Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler returning in the starring role during its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday.
Released in 1996, Happy Gilmore starred Sandler as a failed hockey player with a power slapshot and massive temper who tries his hand at golf. Nearly three decades later, it remains one of Sandler’s most beloved comic ventures.
Sandler previously expressed interest in making a Happy Gilmore sequel in a 2021. At the time, he floated the possibility of centering the film around a senior golf tournament, but cautioned that nothing had been written.
However, earlier this year, Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original film, let it slip that Sandler was working on a draft for Happy Gilmore 2. Sandler’s longtime friend and collaborator Drew Barrymore subsequently confirmed (via Sandler himself) that the project was “in process.

There will be no Grateful Dead played in his house; it leads to sex, drugs, and death, obviously. But because it was Mr. Harold Weir, played by the bright, big-hearted Joe Flaherty, we've let it slide for all these years. A prominent Canadian comedian, Joe Flaherty is known for his work on the Canadian comedy series, Sctv, and as the oddball heckler yelling at Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore. His performance as Harold Weir in the cult-classic series, Freaks and Geeks, has become another one of his defining roles, and while the show was a fleeting moment in pop culture and lasted only one season, it's legacy and Flaherty's portrayal of a straight and arrow father trying to understand his teenage children will last forever.
