Doctor Who's former showrunner, Steven Moffat, has revealed the qualities he believes the Sixteenth Doctor needs to succeed, no matter how Billie Piper's return to the show plays out. Moffat served as showrunner for the iconic British sci-fi series between 2010 and 2017 and had a hand in casting two popular Doctors: Matt Smith's Eleventh and Peter Capaldi's Twelfth.
Though Moffat's predecessor, Russell T. Davies, has taken over Doctor Who again for the BBC and Disney's second new modern era, Moffat still had plenty to say about the mystery surrounding the Sixteenth Doctor. When Moffat was asked what qualities he's looking for in the next Doctor, the writer and producer told RadioTimes.

It has been a rough time being a Doctor Who fan, but for those diehard supporters who have stuck with the sci-fi show through thick and thin…and even thinner…it looks like the fate of the series has now been put beyond doubt. It also looks like the continuation of the series does not hang on the whim of Disney wanting to continue investing in The Doctor and his travels in the Tardis.
Doctor Who managed just fine without a Disney deal until 2024, and it looks like it will do so once again if the House of Mouse decides not to pump more money into the show. While there...

It's been so long since the sequel to World War Z was announced that the movie has become an urban legend. However, an important new development might finally take the movie out of its 12-year-old development hell. In light of the new Paramount-Skydance merger, some projects received a new priority, and it looks like the Brad Pitt (F1) blockbuster is about to see the light of day.
What makes it seem like World War Z 2 is now a reality is the fact that Paramount-Skydance is moving several other titles around in order to fast-track their production. These titles include the threequel to Top Gun and the follow-up to the Star Trek franchise. According to a new report, the company's executives have a plan to release 15 movies a year, which means that several titles are bound to be revisited soon. Co-film Chief Josh Greenstein name-dropped World War Z, so, at the very least,...

John Bishop is one of the lesser-known Doctor Whocompanions, but he played Dan Lewis alongside Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor from the episode "The Halloween Apocalypse" to "The Power of the Doctor." Bishop commented on whether he'd return to the long-running sci-fi series.
Bishop talked about Doctor Who on his podcast The Bishop Exchange. When asked if he was likely to make a return, he responded, “[I have] no more intentions to be in Doctor Who but that’s not my final line on it. That depends on what happens, because all the companions leave Doctor Who with a chance that they can come back when the Doctor has been through whatever travels that they’re going through."
The last time audiences saw Dan, he was part of a "companion support group" where companions of the Doctor, both past and present, got together to discuss their experiences. Other members of the group...

Brad Pitt is on top of the world right now thanks to his latest blockbuster, F1, dominating the box office. However, 12 years ago, he starred in another major box office hit that has also found success on global streaming charts. Pitt stars alongside Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) in World War Z, the 2013 zombie horror film following a former Un employee (Pitt) who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a rapidly evolving zombie pandemic. World War Z is streaming on Paramount+ globally, where it’s still one of the most popular movies on the streamer in more than 10 countries. World War Z earned 67% scores from critics and 72% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film grossed a whopping $540 million at the box office, helping it turn a profit from a hefty $190 million budget.
World War Z is, unfortunately, not streaming anywhere in the United States at the time of writing.

At a time when the future of Doctor Who remains so uncertain, it is easy to look back through time at the timey-wimey genius to have come before. In the modern era, the likes of Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whittaker, and, most recently, Ncuti Gatwa, have held the key to the Tardis and endeared themselves to millions of fans. However, Doctor Who would be nothing without its companions, with one of the most underrated in the modern era hinting at how a return could be on the cards.
During a recent episode of the podcast Making a Scene, Russell T. Davies was in conversation with comedian David Walliams and former companion Matt Lucas, who played Nardole on the series, and suggested any potential return was doomed to fail, saying, "You're kind of doomed. I worry about Nardole being left there because the Cybermen are on their way.

As they are in America, crime shows are a staple in the British television industry, indeed some of the best British TV shows of all time are crime series. But more than just espionage-oriented programming or shows that take the perspective of the criminals themselves, the United Kingdom has an extensive tradition of finely crafted detective stories. From Agatha Christie movies to modern police procedurals, there is no shortage of detective-centric British mysteries in film and television. Be it period piece whodunits to political conspiracies, there are plenty of excellent shows centered on detective figures.
To clarify, though there are many superb British crime shows, this list consists of detective-driven series. This can be police procedurals or less professionally affiliated sleuths like the iconic Sherlock Holmes. The focus here are mystery shows involving a clear level of investigation and deductive reasoning to solve the crimes at hand. Here are the...

Viewers of Doctor Who Season 10 were very taken with Matt Lucas's Nardole. But could he ever come back to the show? That's a question that was put to showrunner Russell T. Davies recently.
Davies appeared on the podcast Making a Scene (via Radio Times) with Lucas and his Little Britain castmate David Walliams. While there, Davies brought up Nardole's fate - after traveling with the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) he remained on a spaceship protecting a group of innocent people from the horrifying Cybermen. Davies told Lucas, "You're kind of doomed. I worry about Nardole being left [on the spaceship] because the Cybermen are on their way."
Lucas revealed that not only did he want to come back to the show, he had actually already pitched a plan for returning. He told Davies, "You have the power. I won't give it away but I did give you an idea for Nardole, didn't I?...

Black Gold: It made the Clampett family rich and took them from the Ozarks to Beverly Hills in "The Beverly Hillbillies," and it's still making people billionaires today. Oil was first extracted for use in China well over 2,000 years ago, but it boomed in the 20th century thanks to the arrival of the automobile, electric lighting, and increasing demand for consumer goods made from plastic. Despite concerns about climate change and innovations in clean and renewable energy, oil and gas production is still one of the biggest industries in the world, with the United States producing around 13 million barrels of crude oil per day. Yet, despite being a driving factor behind today's society, there are still relatively few movies and TV shows about it. One of the most recent to explore this vast topic is Taylor Sheridan's acclaimed "Landman," the absorbing new show that explores the politics and...

EastEnders star Danny Dyer’s vision for a working-class Doctor Who could actually be a good thing for the franchise. The show is on a hiatus at the moment, after Ncuti Gatwa exited the franchise after two seasons as the Fifteenth Doctor. His tenure was filled with controversies, with people trolling his identity to fans criticizing the writing.
Dyer, who is best known for playing Mick Carter in EastEnders till 2022, mentioned that if he were ever to play the part of the Doctor, he would make him more working-class to set him apart from other actors. He said that he would not be a ‘posh’ Doctor (via Digital Spy).

Doctor Who had several fan favorite companions, but it could have made its most controversial companion character more accepted if they had given her a spinoff show of her own. Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald was introduced in the seventh series of the revived show and was created by Steven Moffat, making her a companion of both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi’s Doctor.
While fans often praise Coleman’s performance, the character of Clara is controversial as she was not just a proxy for the audience and had a completely different arc from the other companion characters like Amy Pond and Rose. Clara’s story ended in Doctor Who’s ninth series, but there is a good window for a spinoff show featuring the character, which would have made her more endearing to fans.

"Doctor Who" has famously set up a perfect system to keep going as long as the ratings allow. Thanks to the regeneration ability of the Doctor, the series can simply kill and resurrect the main character whenever the actor departs the role for one reason or another. This has turned out to be an excellent, periodic way to shake up the status quo, as new actors (and showrunners) bring their own spin on the long-living role while keeping the show's most familiar traits intact.
Sometimes, an actor occupies the role for quite a long time. For instance, Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor from 1974 to 1984, appeared in no less than 178 episodes, and three other classic "Doctor Who" era actors also have three-digit episode counts under their belt. Other times, a Doctor's tenure is so short that it seems the fans barely got to know this version of the character.

Jodie Whittaker is well known as the first woman to play the Doctor in the long-running British sci-fi series Doctor Who, making her debut in 2017. But what many don’t realize is that she almost wasn’t the first female to take on the role.
In fact, the idea of a female Doctor was floated more than 30 years before Whittaker’s casting, with several well-known women considered for the part back in the 1980s.
When Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor, it marked a historic moment for the show, which had been running for over 50 years without a female lead. She stepped in after Peter Capaldi’s departure, with Steven Moffat also leaving as showrunner. Whittaker’s casting broke new ground by being the first on-screen female incarnation of the Doctor, but interestingly, this change had almost happened decades earlier.

Peter Capaldi joined Doctor Who as the Twelfth Doctor in 2014, but his first episode got several complaints due to one particular scene. The series 8 premiere, ‘Deep Breath’, saw Capaldi emerge as the new Doctor after Matt Smith and investigate a conspiracy with Clara. Written by Steven Moffat, the show generally got positive reviews.
However, several reported to the Office of Communications about one scene, which saw a kiss between the lizard-esque Madame Vastra and her human on-screen wife Jenny Flint. Among the seven million viewers, six reportedly complained about the kiss, with them accusing the show of promoting a ‘gay agenda’ (via The Independent).
It just seems (executive producer Steven Moffat) is on some weird, lizard-lesbian p*rv trip.
While the episode received generally good reviews, this aspect will forever mar Peter Capaldi’s impressive debut. However, such controversies are nothing new to Doctor Who.

James Gunn has made some big movies, like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. But in a recent interview with French outlet Konbini, he didn’t talk about superheroes. Instead, he talked about a small bear in a blue coat.
During the interview, Gunn stopped at a display for Paddington in Peru and admitted he hadn’t seen it yet. But he didn’t hold back when talking about the previous film in the series. “Paddington 2 is a classic film,” he said. “It’s one of the greatest movies ever made. People think I’m being ironic when I say that, but I’m telling the truth.”
That’s a strong take, but he’s far from the only one who feels that way.
Paddington 2, which came out in 2017, is a live-action and animated comedy directed by Paul King. He also co-wrote it with Simon Farnaby.

Matt Smith came to the defense of Doctor Who after the last two seasons starring Ncuti Gatwa received a ton of hate. Gatwa’s casting got severe criticism, with many reportedly even making racist and queerphobic comments. The actor exited the role after two seasons, with the future of the show now uncertain.
Smith defended the show and its direction years after he left the role back in 2012 and was replaced by Peter Capaldi. Talking about the backlash faced by Gatwa and returning showrunner Russell T. Davies on the new seasons with Disney+, Smith said (via The Times),
Those debates reduce it to a place that it doesn’t need to be in. People that attack Doctor Who blow my mind. It’s about an alien who is cool and travels around the universe saving civilisations – what’s not to love?

Please find your seat in the Tardis, this next news may hurt a bit. The 2005 series of Doctor Who, which rebooted the long-running science fiction franchise, is leaving its HBO Max home for some non-uk audiences, namely in the US, according to JustWatch. The news comes as uncertainty grows for the future of the Disney+ series after the conclusion of Season 2 back in May. Fans saw Ncuti Gatwa's shocking departure, with the Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, confirming a longstanding leak. Doctor Who will leave HBO Max on July 31.
The 2005 series ran until 2021, with the conclusion of Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor era. The series saw iterations of the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth, and Thirteenth Doctors. They were played by Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Whittaker. David Tennant’s tenure as the Doctor has been widely accepted, and while he seemed to be born to play the role, another actor in Doctor Who was so aptly cast that it seemed to be destined for him. Tony Curran played Vincent Van Gogh in the Doctor Who episode ‘Vincent and the Doctor’, with Matt Smith playing the Doctor.
The highlight of the episode is the treatment of Van Gogh, who was often regarded as a man out of his time, as his art gained fame only after his lifetime, which was plagued by depressive episodes, and an attempted s*icide that eventually led to his death due to the injuries. Doctor Who was one of the few works of art that did not vilify his depression, nor did it try to solve it.

"Dad TV" has recently seen a notable resurgence in streaming, with Prime Video enjoying the majority stake through hits like Reacher, Jack Ryan, Bosch, and The Terminal List. Now, AppleTV+, known primarily for its prestige comedies and dramas, is making a serious play for the genre. The streamer already has some major holdings in the space with acclaimed British thrillers like Slow Horses and Criminal Record, but it's showing more hunger for a bigger slice of the Dad TV market with its upcoming adaptation of the acclaimed Lars Kepler crime novels that will shift focus stateside. The untitled series has just snapped a new cast member in Rory Culkin, who becomes the latest powerhouse to join the series, making it clear just how big AppleTV+ is aiming for with this one.

There is no other show like Doctor Who, which seamlessly blends goofy sci-fi with genuine horror that scares the bejeesus out of its audience. One of the reasons for its appeal is this mixture of genres that can be seen in various episodes. It has been sixty years, and none can do the same in this unique fashion.
From Russell T. Davies to Steven Moffat to Chris Chibnall, three showrunners have taken the reins since the 2005 revival, and all have their own strengths and weaknesses. While Moffat is credited with creating the legendary Weeping Angels, Davies revived the show and was the showrunner for some of its greatest Doctors. Each era has its fans.
While sixty years have produced multiple episodes and fifteen Doctors, here are ten episodes across the seasons that prove why Doctor Who is the best.

Doctor Who had one of its best episodes air on June 30, 2007, eighteen years ago, which Russell T. Davies reportedly wrote only in four days. The series 3 finale ‘Last of the Time Lords’ was written by Davies and was directed by Colin Teague and Graeme Harper, continuing the story of the Master and the Toclafane invasion from the previous episodes.
While the arc is considered to be one of the best in the New Who era, many were also disappointed with it, calling the episode the weakest entry in the trilogy and a dissatisfying finale. Davies still considered it a separate story from the previous two episodes, but it is the obvious conclusion in the story arc.

When Doctor Who first landed on television screens in 1963, fans were introduced to several quite interesting elements. We came across a strange man with a time machine, a police box, and a knack for adventure. But still, something was missing, or rather, deliberately left out.
For six years, the BBC show never called him a Time Lord, never even mentioned Gallifrey, and never explained where he really came from. He was simply the Doctor, and that was enough for a while. But why did the creators keep this hidden for so long? Let’s dive deeper to know more.

For a show that’s been zipping through time and space since 1963, Doctor Who has seen more faces than a regenerating chameleon on a caffeine high. With its shape-shifting Time Lord, quirky companions, and monsters that range from delightfully cheesy to genuinely terrifying, the series has built a cult-like following across generations.

Peter Capaldi reportedly played two characters in the Doctor Who universe before he was cast as the Twelfth Doctor. Revived by Steven Moffat, the sci-fi show Doctor Who went through several actors in the role, with Capaldi taking over from Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. However, before he became the Time Lord, he was in the franchise more than once.
Capaldi reportedly played Lobus Caecilius in the fourth series of the revival, with David Tennant as the Doctor. The show also addressed how the Twelfth Doctor had Lobus’ likeness. Capaldi also played another role in the Doctor Who franchise, in the spinoff series Torchwood. He played an antagonistic character in the show.

The revived "Doctor Who" has mostly cast young (or young-ish) actors for its lead role as the Doctor. The benefit of this approach is that the young actor feels fresh to the audience; for instance, Matt Smith was almost completely unknown before being cast as the 11th Doctor, so fans didn't have any baggage from his previous roles affecting their judgment of him.
But fans having a pre-existing relationship with the new actor playing the Doctor isn't necessarily a bad thing. When Peter Capaldi was cast as the 12th Doctor, he was already known for a dozen other memorable roles, a couple of which even happened within the "Doctor Who" universe. On top of that, he had already played a doctor in "World War Z," specifically one who works for the World Health Organization. That's correct: Before Capaldi starred in "Doctor Who," he portrayed a doctor for W.H.O.

Do you remember when you were a kid and argued on the playground that your dad was better and stronger than another kid's dad? Of course, nowadays, these juvenile bouts of whose dad is stronger likely happen across social media or a multiplayer video game. This innate desire to be the best and to be on the best team is a common reference point we humans tend to revisit from childhood into adulthood.
Given the MCU recent theatrical release of the Thunderbolts*, I had that urge again to compare who (i.e. which team) is better and stronger: The Thunderbolts or The Sucicide Squad?
The members of Thunderbolts are comprised of a kaleidoscope of quasi-criminals and anti-heroes who were coerced in as much as they were manipulated (by a morally compromised S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent – Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) to work together for a common clandestine goal.

The zombie horror genre has always been popular, but some films did it better than others. Ahead of a new zombie film, the addition in the 28 Days Laterfranchise, 28 Years Later, set to premiere on June 20, the highest-grossing zombie film of all time is making a splash on streaming.
In 2013, Brad Pitt starred in World War Z, which is now having a resurgence on streaming. The film recently headed to a new streaming home, its studio Paramount Pictures' streaming platform, Paramount+. However, it didn't make an imminent impact on the streaming platform, but World War Z reached the Top 10 globally on Netflix,Tudum reports.
World War Z has had a long, complicated relationship with Netflix. The zombie film left the streaming service in October 2024, but it's still available internationally. For the week between June 9 and 15, World War Z debuted in the charts again in seventh place. It received 3.8 million views and 7.4 million hours viewed.

One of Doctor Who's titular Time Lord's main mantras is to, above all, be kind. This is an aspect of the character that the lead actor needs to hold with them beyond the camera, often gracing the stages of charity functions and helping grant the wishes of fans. Now, two of the show's best-loved lead actors, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi, are returning to the sci-fi franchise to do just that alongside fellow alumni.

Over the past 60 years, the Doctor’s companions have cycled in and out, making them both memorable and fleeting. Since her departure from the show, actor Sophie Aldred, who played Ace, has taken to writing Doctor Who books about her character, and her new Doctor Who project is the most exciting yet.

Doctor Who is about to get a whole new vibe, animated, bold, and brilliantly unexpected. And guess who’s helping kickstart this wild new chapter? None other than Billie Piper. Rose Tyler is back in the mix, and her voice is leading the charge in the Season 15 finale that’s flipping the switch on Doctor Who’s future.
With animation now officially part of the canon, the show’s opening the Tardis doors to infinite storytelling possibilities, no regeneration limits, no budget constraints, just pure Time Lord chaos. And if this finale’s any indication, the future of Doctor Who might be drawn, but it’s far from predictable.

It's been 12 years since Matt Smith last played the Doctor in the BBC seriesDoctor Who. According to former writer Steven Moffat, while the actor has been involved in huge projects like House of the Dragon, Smith has expressed interest in returning to the Doctor Who set.
RadioTimes reported that Moffat appeared in Doctor Who: Unleashed, where he shared his recent WhatsApp conversation with the former actor he has worked with since 2010. He revealed that after Smith learned it had been 15 years since his first appearance, the actor replied that he wished he was on the Doctor Who set. This is when the former showrunner "begged" him to return.
"Today, as I sit here, is the 15th anniversary of when the 11th Doctor fell to Earth and ate fish custard. I WhatsApp'd Matt this morning saying it was 15 years, and he said, 'I wish I was on that set now'.

In a rather surprising turn of events, the season finale of Doctor Who ended with Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor regenerating. This regeneration means that Gatwa is among the actors who's played the Doctor for the shortest amount of time in the modern era, in front of only Christopher Eccleston, who played the Doctor for a single season back in 2005.
Fans had expected Gatwa's Doctor to stick around for at least one more season. From David Tennant's Tenth Doctor to Matt Smith Eleventh to Peter Capaldi's Twelvth to Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth, it's become customary in the 'New Who' era for Doctors to stick around for three seasons at a time before regenerating.
But for Gatwa, ending his journey as the Doctor after only two seasons didn't come as a shock. “It was always the plan to do this amount of seasons,” he said in a behind-the-scenes video.

Doctor Who is not the same anymore. This is a fact that fans can collectively agree on. With the viewership being concerningly low and fans getting more and more dissatisfied with the story progression, one cannot help but wonder what the root cause of this is.
While many would like to pin this on Ncuti Gatwa and call it a day, the problem goes much deeper than that. The show has fundamentally changed in the past few years, and the blame might lie with the writers.
Recently, a fan went into great detail about why they think the series isn’t fun anymore, and they seemed to have hit all of the right points.

The following includes spoilers for Doctor Who Season 2 Finale.
Doctor Who Season 15's finale brought a shocking twist. The series had brought Ncuti Gatwa back as the Fifteenth Doctor, with a new companion, Belinda Chandra, played by Vara Sethu.
After a new season that premiered with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score but mixed responses from the audience, the show reached its season finale. Season 2, Episode 8, "The Reality War," aired on May 15, and it featured the most unexpected finale: after two seasons as the Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa is leaving Doctor Who. In the finale, the Doctor sacrifices his life to restore his daughter Poppy into the normal timeline.
The season finale has also revealed who will take over from Gatwa. This time, the regeneration doesn't lead to a brand-new actor but into a very familiar face. The upcoming Sixteenth Doctor will be played by Billie Piper. She previously played David Tennant's Doctor's companion,...

Ncuti Gatwa's time as the Fifteenth Doctor has come to a shocking end in the Doctor Who season 15 finale, regenerating into a very familiar face. There have long been rumors that Gatwa was due to step out after Doctor Who season 15, and it seems they were correct. The season finale, "The Reality War," ends with the Doctor sacrificing his life to restore his daughter Poppy into the timeline.
The experience leads to a shock regeneration, with the Doctor transformed into a very familiar face. Billie Piper - best known for playing former companion Rose Tyler - is now the Sixteenth Doctor. It's not the first time the Doctor has taken on a face we've seen before; that most famously happened with Peter Capaldi. But this is undoubtedly the most spectacular, because Piper is already so closely associated with Doctor Who.

"Doctor Who" isn't just a television show: It's a cultural institution, one with so many moving pieces it needs its own beginner's guide. The long-running science-fiction program has been on the air since the early 1960s, and although it's gone through various permutations since then, the central premise has always been the same: The Doctor, played by different actors as a result of his species' ability to regenerate, travels throughout time and space in the Tardis, often with companions who help him through various adventures and battles with all sorts of foes.

Charlie Brooker's "Black Mirror" has been darkly interrogating our relationship with media and technology since 2011, and since we're more into our screens than ever, it stands to reason that this show, which is essentially "The Twilight Zone" for our times, is more disturbingly relevant than ever.
A veteran gamer who got his start as a reviewer for the magazine PC Zone, Brooker takes the video game medium seriously. He's far from a scold as far as gaming is concerned, but he does have piercing insight into the ways in which people can become unhealthily obsessed with these virtual environments. We can grow irritated when a game throws a particularly difficult mission or seemingly unbeatable boss level in front of us, yet we get so attached to avatars or characters that it feels like a death in the family when/if they expire.
It's possible that no film or television...
