AMC Theatres CEO explains the new Wednesday ticket slashing price plan
David Corenswet in SUPER/MAN: THE CHRISTOPHER REEVE STORY IS POWERFUL!! MOVIE REVIEW! (2024)
It has been announced recently that, in addition to the usual Tuesday discount ticket prices (that applies to many movie theatre chains), AMC Theatres will be instituting an additional discount day on Wednesdays in which ticket prices will be 50 percent off. AMC offers lower ticket prices during the day, but the new half-priced plan will apply to adult ticket prices in the evening. Premium theatres such as IMAX, Dolby and Prime screens will continue to have a luxury/large screen upcharge, but it will be added on to the 50 percent base pay.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, AMC’s CEO, Adam Aron, would approach this deal with the film studios late last year. Ever since then, the plan has been in discussions before finally announcing the strategy being implemented this summer. Studios have been lobbying for the idea of discount Wednesdays with many exhibitors for years, but Aron is the...

Rachel Zegler's Battle With Disney And A $370 Million Budget: Inside Snow White's Disastrous Opening Weekend
Image
Snow White didn't get off to the best of starts when it opened in theaters this past weekend. The movie fell short of expectations in North America with a $42.2 million haul, and despite estimates pointing to a $100 million global debut, it earned only $86.1 million.

While numbers like that wouldn't usually be considered a decent start for a movie aimed at women and girls, The Hollywood Reporter explains that Snow White's $370 million budget - $270 million went on production and $100 million on marketing - is putting it squarely in "flop" territory.

The budget rocketed as a result of Covid protocols, 2023's strikes, a fire on set, and "creative concerns that required additional work." In other words, the reshoots which took place last year following backlash to various plot leaks and set photos.

The trade expects it to struggle to reach $300 million - $400 million when all is said and done, and it...

Box Office: How ‘Snow White’ Landed in Potential Bomb Territory
Image
The mood was grim Sunday on the Disney lot as Snow White opened behind expectations to just $43 million domestically. Globally, the live-action remake of the iconic 1937 film was expected to clear $100 million, but instead came in at $87.3 million. (Final weekend numbers will arrive later Monday.)

While those hauls wouldn’t normally spell disaster for a female-targeted pic, Snow White has found itself in potential bomb territory because of its hefty production budget of $270 million before another $100 million or so in marketing costs.

Based on initial ticket sales and mixed word-of-mouth, Snow White may have trouble getting to $300 million or $400 million globally, well short of a box-office safety net of $500 million or more, several rival studios execs and box office pundits tell THR. (Consider that 2019’s Dumbo, which debuted to $45 million domestically, topped out at $353 million against a $170 million budget).

Disney supporters would say if anyone is capable of pulling off a fairy-tale ending,...

'Snow White' Box Office Stats Shed Light on If the Controversy Had Any Real Impact
Image
A new report suggests that despite the loud voices on the internet seemingly pulling Snow White into a cultural war, general audiences didn't seem to careas the movie seemed to perform evenly across the country in Red and Blue-leaning cities. For over four years, most of the discourse about Snow White has not been about the actual movie itself but behind the scenes. While the internet certainly makes this a big deal, one must remember that online discourse does not always translate to the real world.

In a report published by Deadline, box office analytics company EntTelligence revealed that despite a seeming conservative-based backlash to Snow White, the movie overperformed in Red County-based cinemas compared to other films, with 40% ticket sales and43.5% admissions. The report did indicate that 60% of ticket sales for Snow White and 56.5% of the film's total attendance (3.1 million admissions) came from theaters in Blue counties. However, it...

‘Snow White’: How Controversial Disney Princess Fared In Blue & Red County Cinemas – Box Office
Image
Exclusive: Heading into the weekend, Disney’s Snow White was being called “Snow Woke” in vitriolic online circles, which begs the question how the movie fared at the box office in the Trumpier areas of a country divided into blue and red states.

The Rachel Zegler-Gal Gadot live action take of the 1937 Disney animated classic bombed at the domestic B.O. with a $43M opening off a $270M production cost (before P&a).

Here’s what we can tell you. Snow White, per box office analytics corp EntTelligence, minted 60% of her ticket sales and drew 56.5% of her total attendance (3.1M admissions) in theaters located in Blue counties.

Now, these figures come with an asterisk. It stands to reason that Snow White‘s business would be driven by Blue counties simply because the majority of theaters in the U.S. reside in such zones at 53% (as determined by the 2024 Presidential...

The agreement calls for the premium format operator to obtain detailed analysis related to capacity and attendance measurement. EntTelligence gathers data on over 3,000 theaters.

Salma Hayek and Channing Tatum in Magic Mike´s Last Dance (2023)
Theaters Turn to Foreign Films, Stunts to Increase Specialty Box Office in the U.S.
Salma Hayek and Channing Tatum in Magic Mike´s Last Dance (2023)
Many are wondering about the state of the specialty film theatrical marketplace and how to save it. Talk to people in the industry and you’ll hear the same issues: too few new films, little market research data and theatrical windows so short that, by the time indies get to many art houses, they’re out on PVOD, cutting into box office. Longtime indie film chain Landmark Theatres has a novel idea for how to improve things: half-naked male dancers!

“We want to celebrate new films when we see an opportunity to give guests something more than just the movie,” says Landmark president Kevin Holloway. And boy, did they ever. On Feb. 9 and 10, Landmark’s Scottsdale Quarter Theatre in Arizona presented the “’Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ Immersive Experience.” For $65 a head, moviegoers got a 75-minute “pre-screening party” at the theater’s bar, a DJ, two alcoholic “Mike-tails,” guns that made...

‘Lightyear’ Box Office: Behind the Pixar Movie’s Family Problem
Image
Click here to read the full article.

In early January of this year, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 set off a loud boom at the domestic box office when opening to 72.1 million in theaters. Paramount insiders estimated that nearly 60 percent of the audience on opening weekend were kids and parents, proving that families were indeed willing to set aside concerns about the ongoing pandemic and return to theaters. Hollywood and theater owners breathed a huge sigh of relief.

But when Pixar and Disney’s Toy Story spinoff Lightyear debuted in cinemas over Father’s Day weekend, only about 38 percent of those turning out were families, helping to explain why the movie launched to 50.6 million, instead of an expected 70 million to 85 million. Worse, it bowed in second place behind holdover Jurassic World: Dominion in a surprise upset, even if it could boast the best opening of the pandemic for an animated film...

Arturo Guillen: An International Vision for a Global Business
Madrid — In 1996, when still at high school, Spain’s Arturo Guillen, having flunked some exams, took a summer job at Entertainment Data Inc.(Edi), which had just set up in Spain, intent on delivering computer-collected box office results to distributors.

Cinema theaters would start relaying results from 10 pm, Guillén recalls. Sometimes the computer froze, so the results were typed out on paper. Guillen would then take an envelope with the final figures around to the studios at 5 am every night, so they had them when they woke up.

“Delays in figures decreases their value and quality,” Guillén told Variety at San Sebastian.

A few cinemas baulked at giving figures. “Once they tried them they saw their value immediately.”

Just a few years later, Guillen was an accepted member of the Spanish film establishment, called on when it came to analyzing film exports or box office at home.

He now teaches...
