WGA Awards: Cord Jefferson to Receive Paul Selvin Award
Image
The Writers Guild of America West announced on Tuesday that American Fiction writer-director Cord Jefferson has been named recipient of the 2024 Paul Selvin Award for the Amazon MGM Studios film, for which he won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay earlier this month.

Additionally, American Fiction — based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett — is nominated for the WGA Award for best adapted screenplay.

The comedy, which stars Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright as a frustrated novelist who writes a satirical book under a pen name that exposes the publishing industry’s limited view of Black life, has garnered numerous awards in addition to the Oscar, including the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, a BAFTA award for best adapted screenplay and Film Independent Spirit Awards for best actor (Wright) and adapted screenplay. The film was also named as one of the year’s best by the...

‘American Fiction’ Oscar Winner Cord Jefferson Set For WGA West’s 2024 Paul Selvin Award
Image
This is fact: Oscar-winning American Fiction screenwriter Cord Jefferson will receive the WGA West’s 2024 Paul Selvin Award next month. The first-time feature scribe will be feted during the West Coast ceremony for strike-delayed 77th Writers Guild Awards on April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.

He also is up for the Adapted Screenplay prize at the WGA Awards, having written his script based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure.

Jefferson also directed American Fiction, which stars Jeffrey Wright as Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a frustrated novelist fed up with the literary establishment’s continual ignorance and blind promotion of what they consider “Black” entertainment. He writes an outlandish “Black” book of his own under a pen name, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

‘She Said’ Screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz To Receive WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award
Image
Rebecca Lenkiewicz will be this year’s recipient of the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award in recognition of her adapted screenplay for She Said, the Universal film about the New York Times reporters who broke the story that exposed disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. The guild said Thursday that she will be honored at the WGA Awards’ Los Angeles ceremony March 5 at the Fairmont Century Plaza.

Lenkiewicz is also nominated this year for a WGA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. She Said is based on the investigation by Times reporters Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey and Rebecca Corbett, and the book by Kantor and Twohey that helped propel the #MeToo movement by uncovering the system that had enabled years of sexual assault by some of the most powerful men in Hollywood.

Looming AMPTP Talks Amid Standoff With Agents Weigh Heavily On Writers’ Minds At WGA Awards
Image
There were far more important things than trophies to be concerned about last night at the WGA Awards as scribes on both coasts were consumed with the guild’s upcoming talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, and of course, the possibility of a strike.

In speaking with a number of writers at both the Beverly Hills and NYC ceremony last night, Deadline heard the same demand from scribes: Give us our cut of streaming profits.

“The last big negotiation [in 2007] was just as streaming was on the table,” Jojo Rabbit filmmaker and WGA adapted screenplay winner Taika Waititi told Deadline last night in New York, “It is the platform and it’s where we all make our bread and butter now. So we have to re-negotiate.”

“This is a pivot point. It feels like every negotiation is an important negotiation, but we’re going through a tectonic...

Blu-ray Review: The Beast In Heat (1977)
Hey, well, Nazisploitation. Like a festering cold sore on a sordid decade, these women-and-men-tortured-in-concentration-camps romps flooded the market after the surprise success of Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS (1975), with Italy leading the way in tribute. Now, I’ve thus far only skimmed the surface of a genre I’m none too keen to dive into; that’s where Severin Films comes in, to hold a newbie’s hand and make sure he survives all the grime. The Beast in Heat (1977) certainly has the grime angle covered (and then some) in Severin’s new Blu-ray; softer sensibilities are warned to stay far, far away.

The story hasn’t changed much, just the players: Dr. Ellen Kratsch is in charge of Research and Development for the Gestapo it seems, and her lab is quite full. Sure, she handles the requisite floggings and such, but a true trailblazer as herself also offers female genital electrolysis,...

Tate Taylor To Direct DreamWorks Studios’ The Girl On The Train
Tate Taylor, who directed DreamWorks Studios’ Oscar-winning film, The Help, returns to direct its adaptation of the New York Times bestselling novel, The Girl On The Train.

DreamWorks acquired the rights to Paula Hawkins’ debut thriller in 2014, prior to the novel’s publication, and set Erin Cressida Wilson to adapt for the screen. Marc Platt will produce the film, while Jared LeBoff of Marc Platt Productions will serve as executive producer.

In “The Girl on the Train,” Rachel, who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds.

“With ‘The Help,’ Tate deftly adapted a beloved novel into a compelling film that stayed true to its origin while pleasing fans and moviegoers alike,” said Holly Bario,...

Will Lyman and Sarah Childress in Frontline (1983)
'The Grand Budapest Hotel' edges out 'Boyhood' at 2015 Writers Guild Awards
Will Lyman and Sarah Childress in Frontline (1983)
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) handed out top film honors to the screenplays of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" Saturday night. On the television side, "Louie" and "True Detective" were favorites, winning two prizes each. Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" competed in the original category at the WGA Awards, while the Academy's Writers Branch, in a rare move outside of guild designation, deemed it adapted due to the fact that a scene from the feature script was the basis of a short film that screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. So if "The Imitation Game" is to go on to Oscar glory, it will have to compete with Chazelle's popular film for the first time this season at the Feb. 22 Academy Awards ceremony. Additionally, presumed Best Picture frontrunner "Birdman" was not eligible for WGA (making it still significant competition with "Grand Budapest" in the original category), nor was "The Theory of Everything,...

Director Alex Gibney To Receive WGA's Paul Selvin Award
Alex Gibney
Almost a year after Alex Gibney first premiered his acclaimed and controversial documentary "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" at Sundance, he has been chosen as the Paul Selvin Award recipient by the Writers Guild of America, West. This marks the first time a documentary film has won the honor. “Alex Gibney is one of the foremost documentary filmmakers of this generation," said Wgaw President Christopher Keyser. "His work has been a filmic conscience for our times. In "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks", Mr. Gibney tackles issues arising out of us living, increasingly, in a surveillance state – from the public’s right to know and the press’ right to publish, to the treatment of whistleblowers." The Paul Selvin Award (named after the late WGA counsel) is given to a script that "exemplifies the liberties and civil rights that are essential to writers everywhere," a cause that Selvin fervently promoted throughout his career.

Writers Guild Awards Go to 'Argo,' 'Zero Dark Thirty,' and 'Searching for Sugar Man'
Bradley Cooper, Debbie Lay, and Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings (2012)
The East Coast WGA Awards show got under way at New York's Bb Kings a good hour before the pokey West Coast, and attendees tweeted up a storm. Soon the trades ran with the news that the key film awards had gone to the adapted screenplay for "Argo" and original script for "Zero Dark Thirty." WGA West was still running clips from nominated screenplays like "Silver Linings Playbook" after the winners had been announced ("Argo"'s clip was the WGA joke, natch.) "Lincoln" writer Tony Kushner accepted his Paul Selvin award from Steven Spielberg as "Argo"'s win was revealed in NYC. Lena Dunham had already tweeted her "Girls" win from New York, to her accepting producer in La, Jenni Konner. (Full list of film and television winners is here and below.) At evening's end, Jessica Chastain gave out the adapted screenplay, finally; "Argo" earned the most applause, and won.

Midnight in Paris is perhaps Allen's best-received film since Bullets Over Broadway (1994), and sold more tickets than any other Woody Allen movie since Hannah and Her Sisters 25 years ago.
