For years, there have been cries for a thorough, big-budget biopic centered on music's most famous quartet: The Beatles. Now, not only are we getting one, but we're getting four, with director Sam Mendes bringing the personal and professional lives of John, Paul, George, and Ringo to the big screen in a cinematic event truly like no other. As the director told a packed audience at the CinemaCon market event earlier this year, "We need big cinematic events to get people out of the house."
Currently, Harris Dickinson is set to appear as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and, finally, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, with the trio of Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Adolescence's Jack Thorne penning each script. However, it seems as if the trio have had help piecing together the story from one of the two remaining members of the Fab Four.

With theaters preparing for a British Invasion ahead of the upcoming Beatles cinematic event in 2028, Ringo Starr is making sure the movies get it right.
After flying to London in April to meet with director Sam Mendes, the Beatles drummer revealed he had issues with how his first marriage to Maureen Starkey Tigrett was depicted in the script for the upcoming four-part biopic about the legendary British rock band, which is penned by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan and Jack Thorne.
“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,” Starr explained to The New York Times. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.'”
Starr is now pleased with his depiction in the script, but he remains skeptical of how Mendes will shoot four films at a time.

The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr recalls sharing some notes with Sam Mendes for his biopic on the musician.
According to a new interview with the New York Times, Starr and Mendes spent “two days” going over the script “line by line” and Starr “offered extensive notes” in order to make the film more accurate to his personal life and experiences.
“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen [his first wife] and I,” Starr told the publication. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.’”
However, after they went over revisions, Starr felt content with the script. “He’ll do what he’s doing,” he said, before adding, “and I’ll send him peace and love.”
There are four biopics on each Beatles member being made by Sony. Barry Keoghan is portraying Starr.

It's hard to imagine anyone but Christopher Nolan turning a three-hour-long biopic about the inventor of the nuclear bomb into a bona fide blockbuster. In a filmography categorized by spectacle and bombast, with a trilogy of era-defining superhero movies and a string of original blockbusters that are ranked among the best films of the 21st century, Nolan brought a singular focus to the project that few other directors could match with unique and personal touches that reflect his fascinations as a director.
In particular is his dedication to shooting with practical effects, replicating the atomic bomb's deadly plume not with CGI but with analog methods like miniatures, variable frame rates, and practical explosions to turn a massive on-set explosion into something truly apocalyptic. Combined with a script that broke the cliches of traditional biopics, a stellar combination of color and black & white IMAX photography, and the confidence to shoot an...

Don’t worry, Beatles fan: Ringo Starr is involved in that upcoming four-part Beatles biopic. The iconic drummer recently told The New York Times that he met with director Sam Mendes to go through one of the scripts line-by-line. The duo collaborated together for two days in April 2025.
While Starr did not cite which out of the assumed four scripts he reviewed, Jez Butterworth (“Ford v Ferrari”), Peter Straughan (“Conclave”) and Jack Thorne (“Adolescence”) are all announced as writing the screenplays.
Starr said he gave “extensive notes” to director Mendes while fact-checking the scripts. The scenes in particular that depicted Starr’s family and his first wife, Maureen Starkey Tigrett (whose casting has not yet been announced), were among the sequences that Starr urged to have reworked.

Sensitivity Warning: This article explores the evolving conversations around representation in Hollywood, including historically harmful practices of casting today. Its purpose is to reflect on where we’ve been- and where we’re going. The Question The most recent use of blackface in an American film I can think of is in ‘Tropic Thunder,’ where it’s deployed in a genius twist of satire: a white, Australian method actor (played by Robert Downey Jr.) undergoes a pigment-altering surgery to play an African-American man. To this day, the comedy catches major flack- arguably more flack than the character receives within the world of the movie- essentially being derided for what some argue is the fundamental reprehensibility of blackface, even when used as a device to mock the offensive practice itself. Alternatively, blackface has been employed metatextually, for the sake of misunderstanding- a fundamental comedic device that dates back to the Greeks.

When you're the guy who’s convincingly played both Walt Disney and Fred Rogers, the idea of seeing you as a cold-blooded mob enforcer doesn’t exactly compute. But Tom Hanks has made a career out of challenging expectations — and one of his boldest, most quietly devastating swings is finally heading to free streaming. Road to Perdition, the underrated gangster drama that gave Hanks one of his most haunting roles, is coming to Pluto TV on July 1.
Released in 2002 and directed by Sam Mendes, Road to Perdition gave the Oscar-winning actor a rare chance to tap into his darker side — and audiences didn’t quite know what to make of it. Despite critical acclaim and six Oscar nominations, including a posthumous nod for Paul Newman, the film somehow drifted out of mainstream conversation. But not for Hanks. He will be only the third CEO in the history of the storied company launched in 1968 to manage The Beatles’ intellectual property canon, administering the legendary band’s recorded music catalog along with film, theatrical and book publishing rights and piloting award-winning projects over the years. The firm is currently collaborating on one of the most ambitious Beatles venture yet with Sony Pictures Entertainment and filmmaker Sam Mendes — four separate theatrical films, one on each of the member of the band. Before The Hurt Locker made stars out of its leading men, Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner, Jarhead saw two Hollywood bona fides in Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx in a riveting war drama of their own. Soon, folks can give the under-celebrated movie a watch when it's streaming on Paramount+.
Released in 2005, Jarhead not only paired the two in-demand actors fresh off Jamie Foxx's Oscar-winning performance in Ray and Jake Gyllenhaal's blockbuster turn in The Day After Tomorrow, but put them under the direction of Sam Mendes. Mendes, who would go on to direct the seminal James Bond film seven years later in Skyfall, exercises his chops in Jarhead, delivering a gritty deviation from his greatest preceding, Oscar-winning success, American Beauty. The collective results are an atmospheric, harrowing look into the psyche of Gulf War-Era soldiers, absolutely worth shooting up to the top of everyone's What to Stream in July charts and watch-lists.

A Quadruple Feature On February 20, 2024, Sony Pictures released the news that they were undertaking what may very well be revolutionary in the world of cinema in this, the Information Age. Sir Sam Mendes Cbe made his name in the theatre originally, with a signature darker aesthetic on beloved classic musicals with his 1993 revival of 'Cabaret', 1994 revival of 'Oliver!', and 2003 revival of 'Gypsy'. It was the former two productions that first intrigued Steven Spielberg with Mendes, and why Spielberg- whose company DreamWorks had bought Alan Ball’s script for 'American Beauty'- hired Sam Mendes to direct the film, winning Mendes the Best Directing Oscar for this, his film debut, springboarding a career of consistently brilliant films. It’s this kind of record that has apparently imbued Sony with the confidence to back this historic project. The Sony press release reads as follows: “As conceived by Mendes,...

Steven Spielberg once applied for the job — and didn’t get it. Same with Christopher Nolan. And Quentin Tarantino. And Peter Jackson.
Over the decades, James Bond has left behind a smoldering trail of blown-up villain lairs and wrecked Aston Martins — but also a hefty pile of heartbroken A-list directors. Ever since Terence Young shot the first 007 feature, 1962’s Dr. No, the franchise has been one of cinema’s most coveted behind-the-camera gigs. Alfonso Cuarón, Joe Wright, Matthew Vaughn, Guy Ritchie — at one time or another, they all dreamed of directing a Bond movie. And they all, for one reason or another, never got the chance.
All of which is to say: congratulations, Denis Villeneuve! You’ve just landed the hardest-to-get directing job in Hollywood. The 58-year-old French-Canadian auteur will be helming the 26th Bond film — the first since longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson sold the...

With one noteworthy exception (which didn’t work out too well in my opinion), no movie in the James Bond series has ever been directed by a marquee-name, rock-star filmmaker. And when you think about it, that’s quite a startling statement. Because…why not? Quentin Tarantino? Christopher Nolan? Who on earth would want to see a Bond film directed by one of those losers?
The directors of the Bond films have mostly been veteran craftsmen (like Terence Young or Guy Hamilton), or journeymen (like John Glen), and a few have had a prestige aura (like Michael Apted or Lee Tamahori). But it was only when Sam Mendes was tapped to direct “Skyfall” that one felt the series was suddenly aiming higher than it had been. Superhero movies have taken over Hollywood in the last 20 years, but one of them just got named the best of the bunch. According to a new ranking by The New York Times, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie of the 21st century.
Over 500 people in the film industry took part in this poll, including actors, directors, and critics. They were asked to pick the best movies released since the start of the year 2000. Each person had their own idea of what makes a movie “the best,” but in the end, The Dark Knight made the biggest impression.
It landed at number 28 on the list of 100, making it the highest-ranked superhero film. The only other superhero movie that made it onto the list was Black Panther, which showed up much lower at number 96.

Superhero movies have taken over the cinema in the 21st century, but only one of them has been crowned the greatest of them all in a major new ranking. According to The New York Times, The Dark Knight is the top superhero film of this century.
The New York Times asked over 500 people in the film industry—including directors, actors, and critics, to vote for the best movies made since January 1, 2000. Everyone had their own idea of what “best” meant, and out of all the superhero movies released, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight came out on top. It landed at number 28 on the list of 100, way ahead of Black Panther, the only other superhero film on the list, which placed at number 96.
For Nolan, it was a big moment too. He had five movies make the top 100, but The Dark Knight ranked the highest. In their write-up, The New York Times said,...

In the 2021 film “No Time to Die,” Daniel Craig repeats one of the James Bond franchise’s most enduring lines to Léa Seydoux: “We have all the time in the world.”
Well, not quite.
Now that Amazon has tapped Denis Villeneuve as the franchise’s next director, the pace is about to accelerate significantly on the 26th outing of James Bond. Even still, Amazon is looking at a 2028 release date for Bond 26. Anything sooner would be impossible to pull off, given the film’s scale, sources say.
Amazon declined to comment for this story.
French-Canadian helmer Villeneuve beat out four European directors — Edward Berger, Edgar Wright, Paul King and Jonathan Nolan — for the coveted job. Now, Amazon will move fast to attach a writer, and then an actor who will slip into Agent 007’s shoes.

The next James Bond movie has found its director, and it is none other than Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker behind Dune. In June 2025, Amazon MGM confirmed that Villeneuve had been tapped to helm the next installment featuring the iconic Agent 007, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman serving as producers.
Villeneuve’s recent track record makes him an exciting choice, but it also means that the door remains open for Christopher Nolan, who was deemed a fan favorite in the race for the director’s chair. While we are excited about Villeneuve’s take on the iconic British superspy, Nolan could also direct a future installment, and here’s why.

Just like actors, many directors have come and gone during 007's time on the big screen. When Daniel Craig played James Bond, the likes of Marc Forster, Sam Mendes, and Martin Campbell all lent their directorial talents to the franchise. Danny Boyle is another director who was once attached to helm a James Bond movie. But, unlike the above names, Boyle's idea for a 007 film was ultimately rejected, causing the director to depart the project. With 28 Years Later now in theaters, fans can't help but wonder what Boyle's James Bond movie would have looked like. With Bond set to enter a new era under Amazon, and with a new actor taking on the license to kill, Boyle has revealed his biggest regret about his canceled project.

Harry Potter Stars Who Shined In Billion-Dollar Movies (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The Harry Potter saga may have ended on screen, but its stars continue to shine brightly across Hollywood. While the Wizarding World gave birth to a generation of globally recognized British actors, it also served as a launching pad for several careers that flourished in entirely different franchises.
What’s especially fascinating is how a few key members of the Harry Potter ensemble didn’t just move on, they joined projects that went on to earn over a billion dollars at the global box office. Their performances, often in very different roles from their magical counterparts, proved their versatility and star power across genres like spy thrillers, musicals, and comic-book spectacles. Whether they were voicing strange creatures, leading musical romances, or fighting crime in Gotham City, these actors made a successful leap beyond Hogwarts.

Revisiting Tom Hanks’ Dark Role In Road To Perdition(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Tom Hanks has established a reputation for portraying likable, decent men who strive to act morally. He’s the type of actor who, just by being on screen, adds a certain warmth to films like Saving Private Ryan and Forrest Gump. However, Hanks abruptly departed from his typical roles in 2002. He ventured into far darker territory in Road to Perdition, and it was one of his most subtly impactful performances to date.
What Is Tom Hanks’ Road To Perdition About?
Road to Perdition, directed by Sam Mendes and based on the graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner, takes place in the grim midst of the Great Depression. The film centers around Michael Sullivan, an Illinois hitman raised and employed by the Irish mobster John Rooney.

The English-language cast is headlined by Marisa Abela and Harris Dickinson, joined by Glenn Close, Bill Nighy, Jessie Buckley, Will Poulter and Toheeb Jimoh, a lineup that underscores Audible’s ambition to match screen casting standards.

Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has thoughts about the casting process for the upcoming 007 reboot. It has been four years since the release of No Time to Die, Daniel Craig's final film as James Bond, which ended a fifteen-year saga that began back in 2006 with Casino Royale. Attempts to relaunch the James Bond franchise have been on and off for years, and earlier this year, the Broccoli family made the controversial decision to give creative control of the franchise to Amazon MGM.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Brosnan was asked who he would pick to take on the role of 007 in a future James Bond movie. The 72-year-old actor previously played the iconic spy in four films, starting with 1995's Goldeneye and concluding in 2002 with Die Another Day. "I have no picks. I shall leave it open to the powers that be," said Brosnan. When asked about his MobLand co-star Tom Hardy,...

Damien Chazelle’s untitled prison movie looks to be adding Dave Bautista to its line-up. More on the story this way.
Plenty of professional wrestlers have attempted to cross the divide between the world of bodyslams (and body oil) to Hollywood acting. Hulk Hogan had a right old go at it in the 1980s and 90s, but could never really leverage all of that star power into a defining project that truly announced his arrival in Hollywood.
Dwayne Johnson has certainly bridged the gap financially, becoming Hollywood’s highest-paid star at times, but his recent career swerve into more serious fare illustrates that even The Rock has begun to realise that replicating his in-ring persona from the 1990s can only get him so far in Hollywood.

Paul Mescal made headlines in 2024 for his performance in Gladiator II, and less than a year later, he’s back with another period drama. Mescal stars alongside Josh O’Connor in The History of Sound, the period drama that follows two young men who set out to record the lives of their fellow American countrymen during World War I. The History of Sound recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and enough early reviews for the film have come in that it’s been given a score on Rotten Tomatoes. The History of Sound currently sits at a 67% from critics on the aggregate site, which is below the 70% earned by Gladiator 2 on Rotten Tomatoes. The History of Sound’s Tomatometer rating comes from 21 reviews at the time of writing, so it is subject to change.

Mission: Impossible Or James Bond: Which Film Had The Biggest Explosion? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
When it comes to massively mounted, slickly choreographed, and (literally) explosive action sequences, both Mission: Impossible and James Bond films have proved their mettle in the past. But one of these films has created a unique world record for the biggest explosion in a movie. Was it a Mission: Impossible film starring Tom Cruise, or a James Bond flick featuring Daniel Craig?
The Film With The Biggest Explosion Record
The record for the biggest explosion in a film is held by Daniel Craig’s Spectre, the 24th film in the James Bond series. According to a report by Cbr, in an action sequence in the movie, when James Bond and Madeleine Swann (played by Léa Seydoux) escape the base of Blofeld, they blow up the entire compound. This took a whopping 8,418 litres of kerosene, making it...

But one of these films has created a unique world record for the biggest explosion in a movie. Was it a Mission: Impossible film starring Tom Cruise, or a James Bond flick featuring Daniel Craig?

Always makes me laugh when stars go to parties and then sequester themselves in roped-off VIP enclaves policed by grim-faced bouncers and eagle-eyed personal publicists. There was this odd sight of Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney leaning in from the outside to converse with Emma Stone seated inside the private zone at the afterparty for the Cannes Film Festival competition film Eddington directed by Ari Aster.
Guiney could’ve been invited in or Stone could’ve stepped out. I respect and admire actors of all ranks, and I understand their significance in our culture. Or they might have to have a conversation about which they weren’t given talking points ahead of time.
Anthony Hopkins always says — or he used to, anyway — that thespians can...

Exclusive: In the words of John Rambo: “Nothing is over!”
Action vets Millennium Media, known for the Has Fallen, Hitman’s Bodyguard and Expendables franchises, are launching John Rambo at the Cannes market, a prequel to 1982 action classic First Blood.
Rare Exports, Big Game and Sisu director Jalmari Helander is set to direct from a screenplay by writing duo Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam). The aim is to start principal photography in October in Thailand.
The film’s plot is under wraps, but it will be the origin story of a young John Rambo during the Vietnam War, with casting in early stages. We understand Sylvester Stallone is aware of the project but is not currently involved. We hear the door is open from producers should a fitting role arise.
One of the most iconic action heroes in U.S. cinema, the character was originally created by...

"The Franchise," an HBO comedy series about a superhero film franchise helmed by creator Jon Brown and executive producers Armando Iannucci and Sam Mendes, was canceled in January of 2025, just a few months after its October 2024 premiere. So what happened here?
According to a Deadline report announcing the show's cancellation, the show just didn't click with viewers, leading to its removal from the premium network's slate. "We're so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the tremendously talented team behind 'The Franchise,' especially Sam Mendes, Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and this hilarious ensemble of actors," a spokesperson for HBO told the outlet at the time about the show's cancellation. "While we won't be moving forward with another season, we look forward to collaborating with all of them in the future."
Later on, HBO's comedy head Amy Gravitt spoke to Deadline in March and said that she...
