Five Sitcoms That Were Accused of Being ‘Seinfeld’ Clones
Image
“Everybody’s ripping me off!”

That’s what Jerry shouts in Season Nine of Seinfeld when Elaine cons him into buying her lunch. While it fit perfectly within the context of “The Dealership” episode, it may also have been a bit of meta-commentary. This was the first episode to air after it was announced that the show would be ending, and Seinfeld was so popular at the time that other sitcoms were popping up left and right that seemed custom-designed to try to capture some of Seinfeld’s success.

Play

The most obvious Seinfeld clones were the uninspired — and usually unsuccessful — low-premise sitcoms about friends who sit around and talk. But plenty of genuinely good shows that have since become TV classics have also been accused of ripping off Seinfeld.

Here are five such shows, some of which were successful while others struggled to find an audience of their own…...

'First Blood' Director Ted Kotcheff Dies Aged 94
Image
Ted Kotcheff, the notable Canadian director who directed classics such asFirst Bloodand Weekend at Bernie's, has died at age 94 on April 10. Kotcheff's family confirmed his passing to The Globe and Mail newspaper. Described as a talented, multi-faceted journeyman by the Toronto International Film Festival, Kotcheff used his eye for hits to direct and produce works on television and theater in both Canada and Hollywood. He created a bridge in the gap between productions in both, using his projects as a way to show there's more power in collaboration.

First Blood (1982) gave Sylvester Stallone his first post-Rocky hit, which turned into sequels. Kotcheff didn't bother with the sequels because he thought they seemed to be celebrating the Vietnam War. "They offered me the first sequel, and after I read the script, I said, 'In the first film he doesn't kill anybody. In this film, he kills 75 people. It seemed to be celebrating the Vietnam War,...

Ted Kotcheff, Director of ‘First Blood’ and ‘Weekend at Bernie’s,’ Dies at 94
Image
Ted Kotcheff, the unheralded Canadian moviemaker who moved gracefully among genres to direct such notable films as The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, First Blood and Weekend at Bernie’s, has died. He was 94.

Kotcheff, who went on to spend 13 seasons as an executive producer on the gritty Dick Wolf series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, died Thursday, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974), starring Richard Dreyfuss as a young hustler, is widely considered to be among the finest Canadian films ever made, and Kotcheff also directed a feature very high of the list of the best movies to come out of Australia — the harrowing thriller Wake in Fright (1971).

The Toronto native, who started his admired 60-year career directing for live television, also helmed the social satire Fun With Dick and Jane (1977), starring George Segal and Jane Fonda; the Nick Nolte-Mac Davis dark pro football drama...

Ted Kotcheff, ‘First Blood’ and ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ Director, Dies at 94
Image
Ted Kotcheff, the Canadian filmmaker who introduced moviegoers to Sylvester Stallone’s traumatized Vietnam War veteran John Rambo with “First Blood” and helmed comedies like “Weekend at Bernie’s,” “Fun With Dick and Jane” and “The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz,” died Thursday. He was 94.

His death was confirmed by his family to Canadian publication The Globe and Mail.

After beginning his career in Canadian television and working in the U.K. industry, Kotcheff broke through, first with the Australian thriller “Wake in Fright,” then with his 1974 feature “The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz,” a Canada-produced adaptation of Mordechai Richler’s 1959 coming-of-age novel starring then-rising star Richard Dreyfuss. The film took home the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and earned an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay (for Richler and Lionel Chetwynd), launching Kotcheff’s career in the American film industry. In later years, Kotcheff worked in the Dick Wolf...

Linda Lavin, Busy Broadway Actress and Star of TV’s ‘Alice,’ Dies at 87
Image
Linda Lavin, the Tony-winning actress who spent nine seasons serving up meals with a side order of sass as the waitress Alice Hyatt on the hit CBS sitcom Alice, died Sunday. She was 87.

Lavin died unexpectedly in Los Angeles of complications from recently discovered lung cancer, her rep told The Hollywood Reporter.

Hal Prince gave Lavin her first big break, pulling her out of the chorus and giving her a speaking part on Broadway in 1962, and she worked twice with Neil Simon, earning the first of her six career Tony nominations for playing the sexpot Elaine in 1970’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers and then winning in 1987 for her turn as the strong-willed Kate in Broadway Bound.

A native of Maine, Lavin had recurred as feisty Det. Janice Wentworth on the first two seasons of ABC’s Barney Miller when she was hired in 1976 to topline Alice, created by Robert Getchell.

Spotted: Bold and the Beautiful Alum Jennifer Finnigan Guest Stars with Husband on ABC’s 911
Image
On a recent episode of ABC’s 911, Bold and the Beautiful alum Jennifer Finnigan guest starred with a familiar face—her real-life husband, Jonathan Silverman. They have been together for 20 years and married for roughly 17 years. So, it was a lot of fun to see them play a contentious couple on the hit Ryan Murphy series that moved from Fox to ABC this season.

Divorce 2024 Style

What was fun about this particular guest star appearance was knowing that Finnigan and Silverman were married in real life. In the episode of 911 titled “Confessions,” they were a husband and wife negotiating a tricky divorce. And, of course, it was messy, toxic, and chaotic.

Silverman’s character had hooked up with his attorney. On top of that, every time he sneezed, Finnigan’s character knew he was lying. That was his big tell. Unfortunately, for the husband, that would be his undoing.

Weekend at Bernie's Cast Reunites 35 Years Later and Address Potential Threequel
Image
One of the most memorable dark comedies of all time, Weekend at Bernie's, was released in theaters all the way back in 1989. 35 years later, the three stars of the movie reunited to reflect on their shared experience working on the film.

Per Fandom Spotlite, the stars of Weekend at Bernie's were featured in a panel at Nickel City Comic Con in October. In the cult classic, Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman played two friends pretending their dead boss, Bernie, played by Terry Kiser, is still alive. All three actors shared some memories they have from the production while fielding questions from fans in attendance. At one point, they discussed how Kiser had suffered some painful real-life injuries from playing dead in the film.

The 10 Best Andrew McCarthy Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Andrew McCarthy is an actor who rose to fame in the 1980s as part of the Brat Pack, a group of young actors known for their roles in teen comedies and dramas. Over the years, McCarthy has appeared in a wide range of films, from beloved cult classics to underseen gems. Some of his best include The Joy Luck Club, Pretty In Pink, and St Elmo's Fire.

Though he may not be the big name in Hollywood he once was, Andrew McCarthy's movies showcase his incredible career in acting that includes some true classics. McCarthy is a member of the so-called "Brat Pack", a group of young actors who found popularity in the 1980s, frequently starring in movies together. The group came to define (and perhaps even limit) McCarthy's career, which is something he recently explored in the Hulu documentary Brats (2024). That has ignited more curiosity about McCarthy's overall acting career.

Image
Sitcoms like Boy Meets World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The King of Queens were popular in the 1990s and ran for over 500 episodes and 20 seasons combined. Friends, which aired over 30 years ago, captured the hearts of viewers worldwide and is synonymous with feelings of nostalgia. In a bid to boost ratings for new sitcoms, NBC created "Star-Crossed Thursday" on November 2, 1995, where characters from Friends made appearances on other shows. Chandler appeared on Caroline in the City, while Ross appeared on The Single Guy.

One aspect of the 1990s that will always remain memorable throughout time is the booming popularity of sitcoms on cable networks. Pop culture was just never the same. Shows like Boy Meets World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The King of Queens were just some examples that rocked television networks at the time, soaring in popularity and fandom. Death Becomes Her (1992): Revisiting a Ghoulish Cult Classic
Image
If I had asked you to name a film from the early 1990s that featured groundbreaking visuals effects that changed the landscape of cinema, you probably answer with Jurassic Park. But what if I told you that instead of dinosaurs, an earlier pioneer in visual effects was a satirical black comedy involving Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and a magic potion? Yep, that’s right. That film does indeed exist and is none other than Death Becomes Her. Directed by the legendary Robert Zemeckis and co-written by David Koepp and Martin Donovan. The idea came to Koepp back when he was working on another film, which featured a story about a man’s attempts to kills his wife, who turns out to be a witch and cannot die. And of course, the witch has an axe to grind now that she knows her husband tried to off her. That idea later developed into Death Becomes Her.

Everything We Know About Elizabeth Banks' Girls Just Want To Have Fun Remake
Image
The title "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" has been attached to several pieces of media over the decades. The best-known version is the Cyndi Lauper song, which came close to topping the pop charts when it came out in 1983. Lauper's tune, however, was a feminist remake of a 1979 song by Robert Hazard.

Lauper's single was so popular in the 1980s that it spawned dozens of other professional artists to record or sing their own versions. And in 1985, it also inspired New World Pictures to put out a romantic comedy of the same name that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt. The film did a modest $6.3 million at the box office relative to its cost. It arguably could have done better if Lauper allowed her song to be used in the film — she refused, however, and Hazard's original version was used instead. Despite that, the feature has left enough...

Girls just wanna have fun, no matter what decade it is.

Village Roadshow is producing a modern-day remake of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the cult 1985 romantic comedy dance movie that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt.

One Weekend At Bernie's Scene Had Terry Kiser Gasping For Air
Image
Ted Kotcheff's 1989 comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" was considered outrageous at the time. Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman play a pair of low-level insurance wonks who, in the course of their daily work, find a mysterious "mistake" on the books. It seems that someone has been committing fraud. When they take it to their boss Bernie (Terry Kiser), he invites them to his beach house as thanks for figuring it out. Bernie is, of course, the perpetrator and intends to murder them. Before he can, however, Bernie is killed by a vengeful mob boss (Bernie was sleeping with the mob boss' sister). When the McCarthy and Silverman characters arrive, they find Bernie dead, surmise that foul play is afoot, and figure they have to protect themselves from any further mob violence ... by pretending Bernie is still alive.

The bulk of the movie involves McCarthy and Silverman hoisting around a dead body,...

Only One Scene In Weekend At Bernie's Wasn't A Real Body
Image
What if you died but could somehow manage to still entertain guests at your exclusive beach house party, mark up the price for your Porsche by 20 grand and sell it, and perform in the bedroom like you never have before ... all while evading a hitman? That's the 1989 dark comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" in a nutshell. Terry Kiser stars as the titular character, which means he plays a corpse for most of the film. And almost the entire film uses Kiser playing dead. However, his co-star Andrew McCarthy revealed that there is one scene in which a real body wasn't used. (Side note: we talked to Andrew McCarthy about his memoir and '80s nostalgia in 2022.)

In "Weekend at Bernie's," Larry (McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman), two young professionals looking to climb the corporate ladder at their New York City insurance company, show their boss, Bernie Lomax, that someone within the company has committed insurance fraud.

Andrew McCarthy was one of the most popular actors of the '80s and an esteemed member of the Brat Pack, alongside teen idols like Emilio Estevez and Molly Ringwald. Thanks to two of his most famous Brat Pack movie characters, Blane in "Pretty in Pink" and Kevin in "St Elmo's Fire," McCarthy became synonymous with the sensitive, angsty, nice guy, but he'd challenge that image by starring in the 1989 black comedy "Weekend at Bernie's."

The absurd film revolves around two young salesmen, Larry (McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman), who drag their boss' corpse around so they can continue hanging out at his beach house and avoid getting wacked by mobsters. Actually, it's just a study of all the different ways two selfish yuppies can use and abuse a corpse, which is a far cry from McCarthy's gentle and compassionate brat pack roles, and far less introspective than anything John Hughes ever wrote.

Weekend At Bernie's Almost Seemed 'Too Funny' While It Was Being Filmed
Image
Ridiculously absurd. Cartoonish. Offensive, maybe? Those are just a few words to describe "Weekend at Bernie's," the 1989 dark comedy about two young professionals --Larry (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman) -- who drag their dead boss' corpse around an island to avoid being taken out by a hitman. Even some of the movie's cast members thought the idea was asinine. But it appears their attitudes changed when they started filming the movie, according to Andrew McCarthy's recollections (via The Hollywood Reporter):

"We thought it was funny s*** as we were doing it ... There's the old saying, 'If it's funny to you on set, it ain't going to be funny on screen,' but we found it really f****** funny. We loved Bernie, and we just wanted to do more s*** to him. So a lot of the s*** we just thought of on set. I love 'Bernie's.' I think it's great.

2022 Emmy nominations ballot: See all 48 Best TV Movie contenders from ‘Adventures in Christmasing’ to ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas’
Image
The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 48 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12; last year, only 41 TV movies were submitted.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 27 to cast their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Weekend at Bernie's Cardboard Cutout Spotted at Kansas City Royals Mlb Game
Image
Cinema history's funniest corpse enjoyed watching some baseball this week, as a Weekend at Bernie's cutout was spotted in the crowd of the Royals/Cubs game at Kauffman Stadium. For this year's Mlb season, teams have been playing games with no fans in attendance in the interest of public safety. Because leaving the seats empty is perhaps a bit too boring, teams have been filling them with cardboard cutouts of people to help give the illusion that there are fans watching in the crowd. For the most part, the cutouts are of ordinary fans or baseball players, but the people at Kauffman Stadium chose to get a bit more creative.

As seen on television, a cutout of Bernie Lomax from Weekend at Bernie's was seen in the front row right behind home plate on Thursday evening's game between the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago Cubs. From his sunglasses and...

Yes, You Recognize That Sharp Objects Actor From Your Childhood
Image Source: Getty / Michael Loccisano

Although it's dark and gruesome, it's hard to not become obsessed with HBO's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's mystery thriller Sharp Objects. It flaunts dreamy visual language, chilling nonlinear storytelling, and, of course, an incredibly talented cast. Besides the obvious headliners like Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson, you'll even recognize the talented forces behind minor characters, like Adora's chatty friend Annie.

In the fourth episode of the HBO series, Camille meets up with her mother's friends, who engage in wine-fueled gossip about Wind Gap's recent deaths. In the circle of women, pearl-donning Annie is especially enthusiastic about making speculations, demanding that Camille spill tea about the case. In the conversation, we learn that her love for gossip is as strong as her razor-sharp zingers. There's a moment when Jackie accuses Bob Nash of the murder since she's caught him staring at her chest. Annie,...
