The Godfather: Casting Wars That Nearly Changed Coppola’s Crime Classic—How He Fought For Al Pacino & More
Image
The Godfather Casting Battle ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Francis Ford Coppola had a vision for The Godfather, but turning that vision into reality was anything but smooth. According to The Mirror, long before cameras started rolling, the film nearly took shape with a completely different cast. Today, it’s hard to picture anyone other than Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, or Diane Keaton in their roles, but things could have gone very differently.

Al Pacino Was Almost Fired From The Godfather Early In Production

Coppola had to push hard to keep his preferred actors in the film. Even Al Pacino, now iconic as Michael Corleone, was nearly fired after the first week, as the studio wasn’t convinced he could carry the role. Coppola, feeling the pressure himself, sat down with Pacino to review the early footage, and much to his displeasure, it wasn’t landing the way he hoped. Pacino later...

Joe Don Baker at an event for Ein Duke kommt selten allein (2005)
Joe Don Baker, Rugged Star of ‘Walking Tall,’ Dies at 89
Joe Don Baker at an event for Ein Duke kommt selten allein (2005)
Joe Don Baker, the broad-shouldered Texas tough guy who portrayed characters on both sides of the law, most notably Sheriff Buford Pusser in the unexpected box-office hit Walking Tall, died May 7, his family announced. He was 89.

Baker first attracted mainstream attention in 1972 when he starred as the younger, business-minded brother of an aging Arizona rodeo rider (Steve McQueen) in Sam Peckinpah’s Junior Bonner (1972), then portrayed a sadistic mob hitman named Molly in Don Siegel’s Charley Varrick (1973), starring Walter Matthau.

In James Bond films, the 6-foot-3 Baker played a villain, the megalomaniacal arms dealer Brad Whitaker, in The Living Daylights (1987), starring Timothy Dalton as 007, then returned as a good guy, CIA agent Jack Wade, opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 1995 and ’97 movies GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies, respectively.

As former professional wrestler Pusser — based on a real-life sheriff who cleaned up crime in his Tennessee town — Baker survives a series...

‘Dinosaur Valley Girls’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Jeff Rector, William Marshall, Harrison Ray, Denise Ames, Karen Black, Griffin Drew, Elizabeth Landau, Carrie Vanston | Written and Directed by Donald F. Glut

With its catchy title and plentiful doses of both effects as well as T&a, Dinosaur Valley Girls became a staple of both video rental stores and late-night cable programming. Which makes it all the more puzzling that it has only now arrived on Blu-ray.

Tony Markham is an action hero whose career is on the decline in part due to his chain smoking which makes it hard for him to get through his more physical scenes. While touring a museum run by Dr. Benjamin Michaels he finds an amulet that sends him back in time where he encounters dinosaurs and hostile cavemen led by Beeg-Mak who steal his medallion before being rescued by Hea-Thor, the leader of a tribe of horny cavewomen, the dinosaur valley girls of the title.

Joseph Wambaugh, Creator of ‘Police Story’ and ‘Onion Field’ Writer, Dies at 88
Image
Joseph Wambaugh, whose experience as an LAPD officer enabled him to bring a warts-and-all realism to his novels about policing and the movies and TV shows like “Police Story,” died Friday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 88.

The cause was esophageal cancer, a family friend told the New York Times.

Wambaugh’s work in novels such as “The New Centurions,” “The Blue Knight” “The Choirboys” and best seller “The Onion Field” rendered the flat, idealized portrait of the Los Angeles Police Dept. presented in “Dragnet” and “Adam-12” permanently outdated, and yet cops felt they understood him and got the way they talked, and they remained among his biggest fans over the course of his career as a novelist.

A highlight of Wambaugh’s relationship with Hollywood was the Harold Becker-directed feature “The Onion Field” (1979), with Wambaugh penning the screenplay based on his own true-crime novel. The book had faithfully...

10 Scariest Standalone Supernatural Horror Movies, Ranked
Image
Not every horror movie needs a sprawling franchise to leave its mark on audiences. While some of the genre’s most iconic films have given rise to sequels, prequels, and entire cinematic universes, others succeed as powerful standalone stories. These films don’t rely on follow-ups to expand their terror. Instead, they deliver a complete and unforgettable experience, packing their supernatural scares into one self-contained narrative that lingers long after the credits roll.

Standalone supernatural horror movies often benefit from this focus, creating intricate and haunting tales that don’t need to stretch their mythology or recycle familiar tropes. They offer fully realized stories, unique atmospheres, and devastating climaxes that remain effective without the promise -- or threat -- of a sequel. And when one-off horrors really master the art of supernatural dread, they don't let you go.

‘East of Wall’ Review: A Grieving Mother and Daughter Find Peace in the Badlands
Image
From Vittorio di Sica’s “Bicycle Thieves” to the films of the Safdies and Sean Baker, using non-professional actors has long been a tool filmmakers have employed to add a note of authenticity to their work. And yet, with “East of Wall,” writer/director Kate Beecroft elevates this concept to greater heights, crafting a feature docu-fiction debut that is cinematically and narratively rich, but also takes care to reflect the deeper reality at the heart of its story.

The film stars newcomer Tabatha Zimiga as…Tabatha Zimiga. Joined by her real-life daughter Porshia and a cast made up mostly of the young, motley crew that’s found refuge on her South Dakota horse ranch, Tabatha is not exactly the Mother Goose type. She wears heavy makeup, has tattoos that run down her neck, and shaves half her head to replicate the look of warriors. At the auctions where she sells...

It’s Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

The Bizarre Flop That Brought Jack Nicholson And Orson Welles Together
Image
If you've delved into any American film history over the years, you've no doubt come across the sentiment that the 1970s was the best period for American cinema, bar none. Of course, any claim of opinion is up for debate, but the reasons for historians and critics coming to this conclusion are harder to deny, as pound for pound, the various conditions needed for filmmaking were particularly favorable during that decade. To wit: the collapse of the Hays Code and the institution of the Motion Picture Association of America allowed for a heretofore unprecedented level of uncensored content in American movies. The "studio system" and a reliance on stars to open movies were quickly becoming things of the past, and while corporate conglomerates were now in charge of the major studios (something which has led to our current state of multiplex stagnation in 2024), at this early stage, the suits had...

How Paul Schrader “Persuaded” Barry Diller to Replace John Travolta With Richard Gere in ‘American Gigolo’
Image
Paul Schrader, at the age of 78, is getting a bit philosophical, a trifle introspective and, if the truth be told, extremely pessimistic about the future.

The legendary former film critic turned screenwriter-director — his long list of credits includes, as screenwriter, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980) and, as writer-director, American Gigolo (1980), First Reformed (2017) and this year’s Oh, Canada — will arrive in Tuscany this week, as a special guest of the Lucca Film Festival. On Sept. 25, he will teach a master class to university students, and the day after, on Sept. 26, he will receive a lifetime achievement award. There will also be a retrospective of his greatest films.

THR Roma caught up with Schrader in New York, just before he hopped his flight for Italy. Before dishing the dirt, and talking about the trials and tribulations of John Travolta, Schrader went all metaphysical.

Paul, you are coming to Lucca.

Almost There: Lois Smith in "Five Easy Pieces"
Image
by Cláudio Alves

No matter how respected or prolific a thespian may be, the glow of Oscar gold isn't guaranteed. Just ask Lois Smith, a titan of the contemporary American stage with nearly 150 screen credits to her name. The closest she ever came to the Academy's good graces was at the start of the 70s and the New Hollywood craze, when playing Jack Nicholson's pianist sister in Five Easy Pieces. Bob Rafelson's film is something of a classic for those interested in this era of American cinema, but its legend tends to circle around the leading man and, maybe, Karen Black. Still, Smith delivers a performance worth considering and, as the title of this post suggests, she was almost there…...

How the Original Child's Play Ending Was Different From What We Got
Image
Chucky's dark origins were influenced by a variety of killer dolls and '80s consumerism, leading to his iconic status in horror. The original script for Child's Play featured a much darker storyline where Chucky was an extension of Andy's rage. The legacy of Chucky continues to evolve through sequels, spin-offs, and merchandise, cementing him as a horror icon.

Chucky's lore has been cemented across nine movies and one TV series. The original Child's Play tells the story of a serial killer turned evil doll who is always hunting for Andy to return him to his former glory. However, Chucky saw some drastic changes from his first conception to where he was in 1988's Child's Play, with the original script taking a much darker approach. Yes, it can get grimmer than a serial killer inhabiting the body of a child's beloved toy.

We will look at the history of Chucky leading up to his debut,...

Invisible Man Movies Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
The Universal Monsters are one of the fundamental building blocks of the horror genre in Hollywood as we know it, where just about every horror film ever made can be related back to one of their many creep shows. Sometimes this connective tissue is thematic, but often it's an overt homage to the monstrous titular character.

We've spoken before at /Film about the best Invisible Man films you haven't seen, but now is the time to rank the best of the best from the entire multiverse of invisibility films. And I mean the entire multiverse. True-to-form horror, slapstick farce, raunchy sex comedy, and family-friendly romps are all fair game on this list, so allow me to be your guide into the land of invisible people as I rank the top 20 from worst to best.

Capricorn One: The Best Sci-Fi Thriller You Never Saw
Image
As far as conspiracy theories go, very few have had as much of a life as the notion that NASA faked the Apollo moon landing. In some ways, one can understand why people felt this way, as it was one of the most critical events in human history, and the only witness was a TV camera. Back then, people distrusted anything they couldn’t see with their own eyes. In the seventies, conspiracy theories started to get famous, especially as far as the government went, with this the era of Watergate. People no longer trusted authority, and into this fraught environment came Capricorn One, a sci-fi-tinged conspiracy thriller that was one of the most popular films of 1977 but has since been largely forgotten – save for a small cult of devoted fans.

The film is directed by Best Movie You Never Saw favorite Peter Hyams, who also made Outland, 2010, Running Scared,...

Karen Black in Der Tag der Heuschrecke (1975)
Review: John Schlesinger’s The Day of the Locust on Arrow Video Blu-ray
Karen Black in Der Tag der Heuschrecke (1975)
Adapted from Nathanael West’s scabrously funny 1939 novel, The Day of the Locust reunites the creative triumvirate of producer Jerome Hellman, director John Schlesinger, and screenwriter Waldo Salt, who had previously teamed up for Midnight Cowboy. Superficially, the two films would seem to be quite different. One is a contemporary tale shot documentary-style on the mean streets of late-’60s New York. The other is an exquisitely detailed period piece filmed largely on Paramount soundstages in L.A. Midnight Cowboy favors gritty realism, while The Day of the Locust descends into a kind of deranged surrealism. But the films are linked since they both focus on loners and outcasts, salaciously prod the seedy underbelly of their milieus, and expose the unforgiving flipside of the American Dream.

The biggest difference between the two films is that Midnight Cowboy mitigates its ultimately tragic denouement with a certain tenderness between its damaged protagonists.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003) – The Best Scene
Rob Zombie
2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the release of writer/director Rob Zombie’s feature debut House of 1000 Corpses (watch it Here), and today we’re celebrating the film’s anniversary with a video that digs into The Best Scene in the movie! You can check it out in the embed above.

The scene we’ve chosen to feature in this video is the opening sequence that involves Captain Spaulding, brought to life through an iconic performance from Sid Haig, dealing with a pair of dimwitted armed robbers who have come busting into his gas station / murder museum.

House of 1000 Corpses has the following synopsis: Two young couples take a misguided tour onto the back roads of America in search of a local legend known as Dr. Satan. Lost and stranded, they are set upon by a bizarre family of psychotics. Murder, cannibalism and satanic rituals are just a...

The Best Made-For-tv Horror Movie Is a Trilogy of Nightmares
Image
For the most part, TV horror movie is generally not that effective... which is what makes Trilogy of Terror such a standout entry for the genre in this medium. This 1975 film is exactly what it sounds like, an anthology made up of three separate short stories, with each of them coming from a different subgenre of horror. One tells the story of a blackmailed teacher, another of two rival sisters, and the last is the most important and influential, centered on one of the earliest on-screen killer dolls. Trilogy of Terror isn't only unique because of its structure, but also because these three segments star Karen Black in four unrelated roles, with the second story having her play dual sister parts. It might be cheesy and dated in many ways, but Trilogy does its job as a fun enough horror movie, and far exceeds the expectations of a made-for-tv horror movie.

When Playtime Turns Terrifying: 10 Great Creepy Doll Horror Movies
Image
Dolls, with their lifeless eyes and eerily human-like features, have long been a staple in horror cinema. Their uncanny ability to blur the line between the animate and inanimate makes them the perfect vessel for terror. Whether they’re possessed by malevolent spirits or simply designed to be unsettling, these dolls are anything but child’s play. Here’s a list of ten creepy doll horror movies that will make you rethink that old toy collection gathering dust in your attic.

MGM 10. Child’s Play (1988)

The film that introduced the world to Chucky, the killer doll with the soul of a serial murderer. When young Andy receives a “Good Guy” doll for his birthday, little does he know that it’s possessed by the spirit of Charles Lee Ray, a notorious killer. Child’s Play masterfully combines dark humor with genuine scares, making it a standout in the creepy doll subgenre. Its success spawned numerous sequels,...

1 Of Hollywood's Biggest Movie Franchises Has Been Totally Forgotten (Could It Be Revived?)
Image
The Airport franchise was once highly successful but has been forgotten by modern audiences due to changing trends in the movie industry. The original Airport film ignited the '70s disaster movie craze and was a blockbuster with a star-studded cast. Despite mixed reviews, the Airport sequels continued to perform well at the box office, but the franchise eventually lost popularity and has not been revived due to lack of cultural relevance and limited possibilities within the concept.

The Airport franchise was once one of Hollywood's most successful movie franchises, but it has been all but forgotten by modern audiences. Sequels used to be considered a dirty word in the movie business, and even the successful ones tended to do around half the business of the originals. Of course, this sentiment is almost unthinkable in a post-mcu world, where modern Hollywood is almost built around franchises and IP. The 1970s had some noticeable movie series,...

Screambox Hidden Gems – 5 Horror Movies to Stream Tonight Including ‘Auntie Lee’s Meat Pies’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Pool Party Massacre

Summer is well underway, and if you’ve already exhausted all the seasonal classics, Pool Party Massacre can fill the void with a comedic send-up to ’80s slashers like Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp (both also on Screambox). Written and directed by Drew Marvick, the 2017 low-budget indie embraces the era with 80 minutes of over-the-top characters, campy performances, and cheesy practical effects.

The titular party isn’t very festive; it’s more like a small gathering of vapid, Real Housewives rejects that barely tolerate one another while lounging by the pool. One by one, a character excuses themselves — including, in one instance,...

‘House of 1000 Corpses’ 20th Anniversary Blu-ray Review – Rob Zombie’s Debut Still Tastes So Damn Good
Image
Before becoming one of the most divisive filmmakers in horror with the likes of Halloween and The Munsters, Rob Zombie was just a musician trying his hand at the film industry. House of 1000 Corpses came together fairly quickly following a failed attempt to reboot The Crow, but the rock star’s Hollywood career almost never was due to post-production controversy that left his directorial debut on the shelf for three years.

Production on Corpses was completed in 2000 before Universal Studios refused to release it due to its objectionable content. MGM later came on board to distribute it in 2002 until a tongue-in-cheek remark by Zombie caused them to cancel the deal. Finally, Lions Gate signed on and released it in April of 2003, launching Zombie’s film career as well as a franchise that would be followed by 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects and 2019’s 3 from Hell.

Unsure if he’d ever...
