Chad Stahelski's Highlander reboot has found its villain, with Dave Bautista in final talks to play the immortal barbarian known as The Kurgan, who was memorably brought to life by Clancy Brown in the '80s movie.
The Kurgan, or Victor Kruger as he goes by in modern times, is one of the world's oldest immortals, emerging as the nemesis of Connor MacLeod (Henry Cavill) after "killing" him on the battlefield in 1536. Bautista was actually circling this role back in 2015, for an earlier take on the property that was set to be helmed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.
Russell Crowe is also on board as MacLeod's mentor and fellow immortal warrior, Ramirez, who was played by Sean Connery in the 1986 original. Industry actress Marisa Abela will play the female lead.

The Highlander reboot appears to have its villain, as word gets out that Dave Bautista could play Kurgan in Chad Stahelski’s new film.
Almost 30 years on from the 1986 original, Highlander is getting a remake courtesy of John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Filming is said to be getting underway this autumn, and it sounds as though the production has slotted in a major piece in its casting puzzle: Dave Bautista is said to be in talks to star as the villain according to Deadline.
Assuming the meetings and form signing all go off without a hitch, this means Bautista will play The Kurgan – the towering, bloodthirsty villain played with wild-eyed relish by Clancy Brown in the first film. He’ll do battle over the centuries with Henry Cavill’s fellow immortal, Connor MacCleod (previously played by Christopher Lambert), while Russell Crowe will replace Sean Connery as the flamboyant mentor, Ramirez.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming Highlander reboot has found its villain in the hulking form of Dave Bautista!
40 years after its release, Highlander remains a wonderful cult favorite movie. It starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a 15th-century Scotsman who’s killed in battle only to become part of a race of Immortals among humanity. They can recover from almost any wound with the ability to die only to return to life with their wounds healed. The one death they can’t return from is decapitation.
These Immortals play “the Game,” a duel where the winner beheads his enemy. That unleashes the "Quickening," a massive energy surge that transfers the loser’s power to the winner. The ultimate goal is the “Prize,” supposedly the power of every Immortal who ever lived. That leads to the franchise’s tag line, “There can be only one.

Dave Bautista is bringing the 1980s back, one action franchise at a time. He's now set to star in two major revivals of '80s VHS action classics from Amazon MGM Studios. He's said to be close to signing on for Road House 2, the sequel to the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake of the Patrick Swayze brawler, and will also star in Chad Stahelski's revival of the immortal Highlanderfranchise. Bautista is said to be playing the role of the villainous Kurgan in the latter.
According to reports, Bautista is circling both roles, and is expected to sign both, but has not yet officially put pen to paper. In Road House 2, he'll be joining Gyllenhaal, who starred as UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton in the Doug Liman-directed remake in 2024. Guy Ritchie was originally set to helm the sequel, but dropped out last month; Ilya Naishuller has stepped in to steer the film.

After years of swords clashing in development limbo, the Highlander reboot is finally gearing up to swing into production—and Henry Cavill just confirmed he’s sharpening his blade. The former Man of Steel star told The Hollywood Reporter that his “big summer plans” are entirely focused on Highlander, the long-gestating fantasy action reboot being helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Cavill is set to lead the Amazon Studios epic as the immortal warrior at the heart of the franchise—and he couldn’t be more thrilled.
“Highlander! That is taking all of my focus. It’s a project that I’m extremely excited about. This character is going to be a lot of fun to play, and I’m loving working with Chad Stahelski. He is a very talented man.”
Fans had already speculated that Cavill’s newly rugged, long-haired look might be for the role—and now it’s official.

With Henry Cavill officially sharpening his sword for Chad Stahelski’s long-awaited Highlander reboot, there’s never been a better time to revisit one of the franchise’s wildest entries – Highlander: Endgame, now streaming for free on Pluto TV. Originally released in 2000, Endgame is both a sequel and a crossover, bridging the cult-classic film series that began with 1986’s Highlander and the long-running TV show starring Adrian Paul. The movie brings together Christopher Lambert’s Connor MacLeod and Adrian Paul’s Duncan MacLeod for a battle that’s one part sword-slinging fantasy epic and one part melancholic family drama. It’s not The Godfather Part II, but it is a critical link in the Highlander mythology – and a fascinating look at how the franchise tried to evolve.
Set in the modern day, Endgame finds Connor living in seclusion after centuries of battling immortals. Duncan, his younger kinsman, is still fighting the good fight.

If you recall '80s and '90s music videos as vividly as I do, you must remember they were big on promoting movies (and their main characters) if the songs were specifically made or used in them. Who could forget Will Smith's banger for "Men in Black" or Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" that helped turn "The Bodyguard" with Kevin Costner into an unlikely hit? Hell, before the internet came around, I often learned about new films by watching MTV and VH1 for hours after school. But those days are long gone; music TV channels aren't really a thing anymore, sadly -- YouTube replaced them once and for all.
Music videos that featured scattered scenes from films throughout basically have disappeared entirely. What stuck around to some extent, however, is beloved and big-time Hollywood actors appearing in silly, heartfelt, and sometimes beautifully heartbreaking music videos...

Henry Cavill just gave fans a transformation that doesn’t involve capes, Krypton, or changing in a phone booth. The Man of Steelstar stepped out at Wimbledon’s final day alongside girlfriend Natalie Viscuso, sporting a look that marks a distinct shift from the clean-cut style fans have grown used to over the years. Dressed in a double-breasted navy blazer, ivory trousers, and a tan fedora, Cavill looked every bit the gentleman — but it was the long, flowing hair that had people talking. The timing was coincidental, but also fitting, as Cavill made the appearance on opening weekend for James Gunn's Superman, but he looked as different as possible from Clark Kent's usual look.

Marisa Abela, one of the stars of acclaimed British drama Industry, has joined Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in Highlander, Amazon MGM’s remake of the 1980s cult classic.
Chad Stahelski is on board to direct the feature, which hails from Amazon MGM’s United Artists banner and is slated to get a theatrical release.
The original Highlander, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Medieval Scottish Highlander who discovers he is an immortal warrior. With the help of a swordsman named Ramirez, played by Sean Connery, the titular Highlander battles other immortals across the centuries, culminating in a modern battle in which, like the classic line of dialogue goes, “there can be only one.” The movie went back and forth from various time periods.

Get ready to test your might. With Mortal Kombat II making its way to theaters this fall, one streamer is about to offer the entire franchise on one convenient streaming platform. HBO Max will offer all three previous Mortal Kombat movies, plus the Mortal Kombat Legends series of animated films, starting on July 1. The franchise is an adaptation of the popular Mortal Kombat series of fighting video games. Introduced in 1992, the series gained notoriety for its bone-crushing violence and then-shocking levels of gore.
In the games, human and non-human fighters square off in the otherworldly martial arts tournament of the same name, finishing each other off with "Fatalities," gruesome kills that would make even Art the Clown queasy. The series' plot revolves around the battle between the forces of good and evil: if the forces of good are defeated at Mortal Kombat, the Earth will be invaded and overrun by the demonic residents of Outworld.

The long-awaited Highlander reboot from John Wick director Chad Stahelski has added another immortal to its ranks. Variety reports that Russell Crowe has signed on to the movie; he'll be playing a seasoned immortal warrior who serves as the mentor to the lead character played by Henry Cavill. If you're keeping track, that means Crowe will be assuming a new version of the mentor character played by Sean Connery in the 1986 film.
The original Highlander movie starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal swordsman hailing from the 16th century Scottish highlands. Through flashbacks, the viewer sees how MacLeod discovered he was an immortal and was subsequently taught by a Spanish swordsman named Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez (Connery). These immortal warriors can only be killed by being decapitated; if another immortal is the one who does the deed, they gain the power of their fallen foe through a transfer of power known as the Quickening.

The upcoming Highlander reboot appears to be embracing the franchise’s quirky casting legacy, especially when it comes to the role of Ramirez, the iconic Spanish immortal.
In the original 1986 film, the part was famously played by Scottish actor Sean Connery, a choice that became both beloved and bemusing among fans.
Now, in a similarly unexpected move, New Zealand-born, Australian Oscar-winner Russell Crowe has been tapped to portray Ramirez in the new reboot [per Deadline], which stars Henry Cavill and is directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick).
Ramirez was later retconned to be Egyptian rather than Spanish, so it will be interesting to see what approach the remake takes.
Production is set to begin in September, and with Crowe now officially on board, additional casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks as momentum builds around this long-anticipated revival of the fantasy action franchise.

In Highlander, there can only be one. Still, adding actors to the cast of Henry Cavill’s upcoming reboot sounds like a good idea. According to Collider, Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is officially joining the cast. The forthcoming reboot of Highlander features Cavill in the lead role, with John Wick mastermind Chad Stahelski directing, and cameras beginning to roll this Autumn.
Previously, Stahelski told Collider that his Highlander project is more than a reboot. It’s a chapter in the franchise meant to broaden the saga to untapped and unknown parts.
Stahelski has also teased the timeline for the movie. “We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how it goes,” he said. “There’s big opportunity for action. There’s a chance to play a character that not a lot of people get to play.

There can be only one — but there is room for Russell Crowe. Collider can exclusively reveal that the Oscar-winning Gladiator star has officially joined the cast of Highlander, the long-awaited reboot from John Wickmastermind Chad Stahelski. Crowe will star in a key role opposite Henry Cavill, who was previously announced as the film’s sword-swinging immortal lead. The project has been in various stages of development for nearly a decade, but with Stahelski locked in to direct and production scheduled to begin this fall, as we revealed earlier this week, Highlander is finally moving forward — and with an expanded scope.
In a past conversation with Collider, Stahelski teased that this Highlander isn’t just a remake of the 1986 cult classic, but a broader evolution of the saga.

Henry Cavilljust gave fans a very different kind of transformation — and no, it doesn’t involve a cape or Krypton, or changing in a telephone box. In a surprise appearance at the Taormina Film Festival on Wednesday, as reported by InStyle, the actor debuted chin-length curls on the red carpet, marking a major shift from the clean-cut style most audiences associate with his roles in Man of Steel. Cavill, looking sharp in a double-breasted tux, walked the carpet alongside girlfriend Natalie Viscuso.

While some fans might be shocked by the new look, longtime Cavill watchers will recognize this isn’t the first time he’s embraced long hair — the last time he sported a similar length was all the way back in 2009 (bar the glorious white wig that he wore in The Witcher). But the timing here is no coincidence. With cameras finally set to...

While Luc Besson has had a long career as a director and producer, going all the way back to 1985’s Subway (starring a young Christopher Lambert), for many of us, his crowning achievement remains The Fifth Element. A respectable hit when it was released in the spring of 1997, its reputation has grown considerably in the years since its release, with it widely regarded as a classic. In it, Bruce Willis plays Korben Dallas, a futurist NYC cabbie, who crosses paths with Milla Jovovich’s Leeloo, the titular Fifth Element, and becomes embroiled in a quest to save the galaxy, with him opposed by Gary Oldman’s Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg.
While packed with show-stopping sequences, the movie is most famous for the extended opera house sequence. In it, Dallas, undercover for the government, attends an opera performance by Diva Plavalaguna, who performs the now iconic “Diva Dance”, with music by Eric Serra.
