One of the Best New Batman Animated Movies Is Finally Headed to Streaming
Image
Even though Batman fans have been extremely patient with the highly anticipated The Batman 2 getting delayed repeatedly, they can't complain about the franchise as a whole. The universe inhabited by Bruce Wayne still generates exciting stories, and one of them is the anime sequel Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League. The movie takes the caped crusader back to the Japanese landscape, and today HBO Max announced that it is debuting on the platform on July 3.

One of the coolest things about Batman Ninja is that it's also a soft Justice League film. The story finds a way to include other superheroes like Aquaman (voiced by Akio Ôtsuka), Green Lantern (AyaneSakura), and The Flash (NobuyukiHiyama), but puts them on the villain side — so it's essentially a Batman adventure with formidable and familiar enemies. The trailer underscores the other characters that we will see in Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, including Commissioner...

Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League Review: Gotham’s Gravity Gamble
Image
Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League picks up mere days after 2018’s Batman Ninja, flinging Gotham into a whirlwind of samurai swagger and street-level mayhem. When Damian Wayne’s phone blares an alert about an incoming “Yakuza Hurricane,” our attention snaps to the sky: an inverted Japan, suspended like a looming fortress above the city, spews jet-packed gangsters into alleyways below.

Junpei Mizusaki and Shinji Takagi co-direct with Kazuki Nakashima’s script guiding every eccentric twist. Their goal seems clear: crank anime-style spectacle to eleven while embracing the absurd. Batman and Robin pilot the Batwing through gravity-defying chases, punctuated by nonstop world-bending exposition that plays as both narrative engine and running joke.

Visually, the film marries traditional cel shading with bursts of 3D flair, pushing each showdown into kaleidoscopic territory. Dialogue hops between blunt humor—“This is so dumb”—and earnest appeals to honor, as when Gotham’s heroes struggle to redeem their twisted counterparts.

Anime's Underrated Spring 2025 Cyberpunk Series Is Inspired by Westworld
Image
Your Forma director Takaharu Ozaki confirms that the sleeper-hit anime was inspired by a fan-favorite science fiction series.

Speaking to Anime News Network, director Ozaki recalled how reading the original Your Forma light novel series brought him right back to his comfort zone in terms of similar sci-fi stories. "When I first started reading Your Forma, I thought of typical cyberpunk stories like Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, and The Matrix—I was thinking of cyberpunk movies from the '80s and '90s," Ozaki said. "As I read on in the novel, other works came to mind. There is a TV series called Westworld, which is all about what it means to be human," he added, before also referencing iconic films such as Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days and 2006's French animated tech-noir thriller - Renaissance.

Image
If you are not a Max subscriber but are immensely curious to check out the new anime from Cowboy Bebop director Shinichirō Watanabe, this is a good day for you. Adult Swim decided to make the first episode of Lazarus available for free on YouTube — and you can also watch it in this article. The story takes place in a not-too-distant future and centers around a utopian society in which all diseases have been cured.

The twist to Lazarus is — and don't worry, this is not a spoiler — that the drug that helped humanity overcome all diseases was manufactured by a doctor called Skinner (voiced by Koichi Yamadera in the original Japanese and by David Matranga in the English dub), a mad scientist that resurfaces years later and announces that everyone who took Hapna will die if he isn't located to provide a cure. This is where the story starts:...

And while the production suffered a large hiatus, we now know that the anime is premiering on April 6, 2025 and to hype us up even more, the opening video for the anime has just been released.

‘Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League’ Review
Image
Features the voices of: Koichi Yamadera, Daisuke Ono, Akira Ishida, Kengo Kawanishi, Yuki Kaji, Romi Park, Akio Otsuka, Ayane Sakura, Rie Kugimiya, Wataru Takagi | Written by Kazuki Nakashima | Directed by Junpei Mizusaki, Shinji Takagi

Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, a sequel to the 2018 cult hit Batman Ninja, is a film that revels in its own absurdity while delivering a heartfelt tribute to both anime conventions and the DC Universe. Directed by Junpei Mizusaki and Shinji Takagi, with a screenplay by Kazuki Nakashima, this animated superhero romp picks up a day after the events of Batman Ninja, plunging Batman and his allies into a multiversal mash-up that’s equal parts thrilling, ridiculously gorgeous and surprisingly poignant. This new film doubles down on the over-the-top nonsense of the original, offering a wild ride that’s as much a love letter to Japanese culture as it is a playful riff on the superhero genre.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods review – classic anime has cosmic charm
Dragonball (1995)
An anniversary edition of the 2013 martial arts animation is light on bombast, funny and mischievous

Here is a 10th-anniversary extended edition, with 20 added minutes, of the 18th theatrical outing for Dragon Ball, which was credited with revitalising the franchise. With original series creator Akira Toriyama apparently taking a stronger hand during production, this 2013 film hit the sweet spot where daffy character comedy powered up Ott anime smackdown, in the process laying the groundwork for the brand’s next phase, Dragon Ball Super.

“Such over-the-top naming. It ends up sounding tawdry,” comments a lackey to intergalactic god of destruction Beerus (Kōichi Yamadera) when the pair hear of a “Super Saiyan God” on the loose. Despite being a nap-centric sphynx cat in harem pants, Beerus is impatient for a worthy foe, so he decides to call in on any nearby Saiyans (a race of super-strong aliens) who might point him in the right direction.

These ‘90s Anime Were Way Too Mature For Kids
Image
The 1990s was a watershed decade for anime, especially in the West. This was the era in which the medium became more mainstream, with programming blocks such as Toonami bringing Japanese hits to American kids. Of course, not all of the anime brought over in the '90s were family-friendly, but this only made some of them more iconic.

There were numerous 1990s anime that truly proved that animation wasn't just for kids, namely for Westerners who had such beliefs. Not meant for children or teens, some of these works were full of content that would make Walt Disney blush. Even though they were intended for older viewers, many kids still snuck a watch with these hardcore anime - and it was worth it.

Ghost in the Shell remains a staple of cyberpunk anime, with the original animated movie adaptation still highly regarded by fans and filmmakers. Now, the director of the first two films is recalling a particularly sick sentiment that went into the second movie.

Speaking about the remastered 4K versions of Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence that are coming to theaters in a new statement via Mantan Web, director Mamoru Oshii noted the development of the second movie. Particularly proud of the film, this feeling came after a traumatic personal event. This all comes as the original film is celebrating its own major milestone, with the sequel having just reached a similar achievement.

Ryûsei Nakao
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga creator Hirhiko Araki has expressed his shock and concern after discovering that his art was flawlessly imitated by AI.

In the second chapter of New Manga Techniques, released on Nov 15, 2024, Araki shared his experience of stumbling upon an AI-generated piece of artwork that was so precise it was almost indistinguishable from his own style.

“Recently, I came across a drawing and thought. ‘This is something I drew, right?’ I was shocked to find out it was actually created by Al. When I draw manga, I add subtle, personal elements that make the work uniquely mine. This AI-generated piece even mimicked details like the way I draw eyelashes, so precisely that it was almost impossible to tell it apart from my work,” he noted.

He noted that if it were based on his more recent works, he would have been able to differentiate it immediately.
