Netflix’s comic book adaptation “The Umbrella Academy” returns for a third season while marking a notable milestone for transgender representation onscreen.

After lead star Elliot Page came out as trans in 2020, the Netflix series includes Page’s character also coming out as Viktor Hargreeves, who uses he/him pronouns. Page announced the news for his character in March, teasing a first look image for the third season. Netflix confirmed the introduction of Viktor, writing, “Welcome to the family, Viktor — we’re so happy you’re here.”

Season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy,” streaming June 22, picks up after the group put a stop to 1963’s doomsday. The Umbrella Academy members return home to the present but soon realize that the timeline split has drastic consequences. In Season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy,” the gifted Hargreeves siblings have found a new foe in the rival Sparrow Academy, which took their place during a time traveling mission to save the world. Netflix dropped the official trailer Thursday, giving fans a look at the insanity to come, including countless fight sequences, mysterious powers and a kugelblitz — a black hole formed from radiation that threatens to swallow the entire universe.

“When we jumped here, we created a time paradox. Our little paradox brought forth a kugelblitz,” Aidan Gallagher’s Number Five says in the trailer.

“What the hell is a kugelblitz?,” Elliot Page’s Viktor Hargeeves asks. “Essentially, we’re screwed,” Number Five responds.

This season, fans will also see changes in Page’s character, who was re-named Viktor from Vanya after Page came out as transgender in 2020. In March, Page announced that his character will also come out as trans on the new season.

Netflix has released first look images for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 3, offering a glimpse at the new timeline (and fight for the future) awaiting the oddball heroes in the new season.

After shutting down a 1963 apocalypse in Season 2, the Hargreeves, aka the Umbrella Academy, return home to the present day for a quick breather and short-lived relief over saving the timeline. But it doesn’t take long to realize they’ve changed the timeline more than they expected, and along with the realization that things are not completely Ok, comes the Sparrow Academy: a chilly, clever and fashionable group that clashes with the Umbrellas as soon as they enter the story. An unknown violent force causes damage (possibly thanks to them), bringing the Umbrellas to enlist Dad’s new family to help them correct something they may have caused while trying to fix the Universe’s timeline.

Elliot Page’s character Vanya Hargreeves will come out as transgender in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, and will be known as Viktor Hargreeves, Page revealed Tuesday on Twitter.

The third season of “The Umbrella Academy” will premiere on June 22, showrunner Steve Blackman announced at SXSW on Sunday. Netflix also dropped first-look images of the cast and a Season 3 teaser, which shows the Umbrella Academy face-to-face with their new counterparts, the Sparrow Academy.

After going back in time to 1963 and saving the world at the end of Season 2, the new season will pick up where the Hargreeves siblings left off. In an altered timeline, Reginald created the Sparrow Academy, a stylish and smart group of superheroes that mirrors the Umbrella Academy. After a violent confrontation, the two groups must learn to team up and defeat a new entity that threatens to destroy everything. The logline from Netflix asks, “Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?”

“The Umbrella Academy” will return this summer.

Showrunner Steve Blackman announced at SXSW on Sunday that the fan-favorite series will be back this summer, with “The Umbrella Academy” Season 3 set to premiere on Netflix on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. That’s nearly two years after the show’s second season premiered in 2020 to fan acclaim and left viewers in shock with a whopper of a cliffhanger ending.

In addition to announcing the Season 3 premiere date, Netflix has also released a short teaser video (which you can watch below) and an official synopsis for the third season of the comic book adaptation.
