Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

It was with a mix of trepidation and intrigue that I hit play on Dustin Ferguson’s Amityville Clownhouse (2020). The film, first released in 2017 under the title Amityville: Evil Never Dies, is a direct sequel to Amityville Toybox (aka Amityville Terror), the very low budget film about a father who kills his entire family after being gifted a toy monkey for his fiftieth birthday.

Toybox was emphatically not a good film, but it did feature a 10 minute coda that was a) the best part of the film, and b) teased a promising new narrative about a team of paranormal investigators.

Dustin Ferguson, director and creator of horror flicks and owner of cult-film status Old Skool Video rental store, has announced that Mark Patton, lauded as the first “male scream queen,” is continuing his return to acting as one of the stars of Ferguson's Amityville: Evil Never Dies.

The new film is a continuation of the “Amityville” horror series created by Ferguson and Mike Johnson. In their 2016 film "The Amityville Legacy,” a cursed antique toy monkey from the original DeFeo Amityville home, creates havoc and possesses a father after being gifted during an annual family reunion.

“Amityville: Evil Never Dies,” takes place one year after the events in "The Amityville Legacy." A young couple, played by Ben Gothier and Michelle Muir-Lewis, purchases the cursed toy monkey from the owner of a local antique shop, played by Patton. Director David Decoteau (or as he’s also been known through the years, Julian Breen, Ellen Cabot, Richard Chasen, Marc Denne, David Doe, Wilma Rubble, Victoria Sloan, H.L. Smokum) is a legend in the B-Movie industry, having invented his own genre of film known as “Boxer Briefs Horror.”
