Marvel Studios Was Shocked By Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Negative Reviews
Image
Marvel Studios reportedly expected Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to be a huge hit.

Joanna Robinson, who wrote the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, talked about the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on The Watch podcast with hosts Chris Ryan and Andy Greenwald. After talking to various insiders while writing her book, Robinson revealed that Quantumania's negative reception took the executives at Marvel Studios by surprise. "Quantumania really shook them because they felt like they had something good," she said. "Like they all internally thought everyone's gonna love this." She further claimed that the failure of Quantumania made Marvel executives realize that their opinions on projects no longer align with what audiences think.

World in Action: A Paul Greengrass Retrospective
With Jason Bourne arriving this week, we’re looking back on the career of director Paul Greengrass. As the person who single-handedly popularized the technique of “shaky cam” for the new millennium, Greengrass has seen his signature style emulated in action films as wide-ranging as Quantum of Solace and Taken 2. While so many of these pictures exploit the visual chaos of handheld camerawork to mask lazy fight choreography, Greengrass has always wielded the aesthetic with visionary purpose, whether that purpose be visceral, political, or both.

Indeed, shaky cam may be Greengrass’ most recognizable trademark, but it is the filmmaker’s purposefulness in confronting social and political issues that most fully unites his work past and present. Prior to making feature films, Greengrass worked for ten years at World in Action, a British investigative current events program known for its forceful and unorthodox journalistic style. Leaving a trail of controversy in its wake,...

Strike Back: saluting a top action TV show
facebook

twitter

google+

With plenty of macho fights, practical stunts and shoot-outs, Strike Back was an uncomplicated action TV show par excellence...

Action series Strike Back is destined to never be included in the pantheon of great TV shows. While The Sopranos or Breaking Bad are held in such high regard for their superlative writing, acting and drama, Strike Back will instead be remembered for the kick-ass action, gratuitous nudity and excellent chemistry between the lead actors.

For fans of the show, that’s a good enough legacy.

So what is it about Strike Back – which can best be described as the lovechild of 24 and a Cannon Group action movie – that works so well? In this case it might just the very thing that keeps it off the 'Greatest TV Shows Ever' lists; its simplicity. For the most part the show is a meat-and-potatoes action thriller, containing all the elements...

Left Bank Pictures is currently in development on a feature film that will continue the story of this cult hit.

The Strike Back movie is still in the early stages. London-based Lbp has struck a deal to develop the action-packed adventure alongside European pay TV giant Sky. And the hope is to have Philip Winchester and Sullivan Stapleton return to reprise their roles once the film is green lit. Producers are currently in talks with Cinemax to join as a partner, and to insure U.S. distribution. As of yet, no domestic deal has been struck.

Once everything falls into place, which is expected to happen soon, Strike Back will shoot in South America throughout...

A "Strike Back" Movie Is In Development
Left Bank Pictures is reportedly developing a feature film based on the cult hit Cinemax action series "Strike Back".

Left Bank is said to have a deal to develop the film with European pay TV giant Sky. Stars Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester would likely reprise their roles if the film goes forward, though both are currently committed to American TV series "Blindspot" and "The Player" respectively.

Producers are also in early talks with Cinemax to get them onboard too, and if approved the movie would shoot in South America next year and potentially be the launchpad to an ongoing film franchise.

Based on Sas soldier Chris Ryan's novel, the story follows a secretive branch of the British Defense Intelligence service who take on high risk missions around the globe.

Strike Back final season on hold as star Sullivan Stapleton is injured
Strike Back star Sullivan Stapleton has reportedly been injured in Thailand.

Filming on the action-drama's latest season will go on a forced hiatus to allow Stapleton to recover, Deadline reports.

The Australian actor plays Us operative Damien Scott on Strike Back, which will halt shooting for six months.

Though details of Stapleton's condition are yet to emerge, it is reported that he was injured off-set and not as a result of filming.

The new season of Strike Back - confirmed to be the show's last - was scheduled to debut on Cinemax in late 2014. However, the production hiatus could now lead to the premiere date being pushed back.

The series - which also stars Philip Winchester and is based on the book by Chris Ryan - is a co-production between Cinemax, Sky and Left Bank Pictures.

‘Strike Back: Origins’ Finale Review
[This is a review of Strike Back: Origins episode 6. There will be Spoilers.]

-

When you stop to consider the open-ended conclusion to Strike Back: Origins, it’s plain to see that the series had wrapped its first season with an eye toward the future of wrongly disgraced soldier John Porter and the various classified, disavowable exploits of Section 20. As we all now know, those plans did come to fruition, but not in the way fans of Origins (a.k.a. Chris Ryan’s Strike Back) had likely thought was coming.

But what’s interesting about Origins and where it fits into the overall story of Cinemax’s Scott and Stonebridge-led Strike Back is how the whole thing plays ...

Strike Back Episode 3, Kill Zone: Recap and Review
Jamie Bamber, Robson Green, Daniel MacPherson, Sullivan Stapleton, Philip Winchester, Michelle Lukes, Warren Brown, Alin Sumarwata, and Varada Sethu in Strike Back (2010)
Action series Strike Back goes to Africa, and David Chute likes it.South Africa plays itself, rather than standing in for India or Afghanistan, in the third episode of the excellent Strike Back. This dense and propulsive counter-terrorism action series (based on a novel by former Sas officer Chris Ryan), a Sky/Cinemax cross-pond co-production based in Johannesburg, location-jumps from inner city shanty towns that could be in Kingston or Mumbai, to red-earth desert landscapes that echo the Spanish scrub of the Sergio Leone westerns, but with a richer color palette. It makes a perfect, picturesque backdrop for the activities of covert operatives who have replaced the quaint old gentlemanly concept of a license to kill with the much more through and goal-oriented notion of the kill ...

Cinemax Ventures into Original Programming with UK Adaptation ‘Strike Back’
HBO offshoot, Cinemax, is finally getting its feet wet in the scripted drama arena with Strike Back, the premium channel’s first foray into original programming that isn’t strictly adults only.

The series is based on the UK program of the same name, which itself is based on the book Strike Back by former Special Forces officer Chris Ryan. The original UK version aired in 2009 as a six-part mini-series staring Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) and Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead) in a story of a former soldier who is called back into action to assist with a Middle East hostage situation just before the Iraq invasion of 2003.

Cinemax plans to take the premise of the original 2009 Strike Back, and expand it into a more globetrotting, action adventure series that will suit the palates of ...

Sky & HBO to co-produce Strike Back
We already knew that Sky’s action thriller Strike Back (based on the novel by ex-sas soldier Chris Ryan, I reviewed its premiere here) is returning for a second series, but The Independent are reporting that HBO will be co-producing with Left Bank Pictures on the new 10-part run.

This deal is unrelated to Sky’s acquisition of HBO’s programming for £150m over five years, but the two broadcasters are evidently getting close. The BBC previously co-produced Rome, Extras and The Special Relationship with HBO, but this is the first production partnership they’ve had with Sky. It also suggests that Strike Back will be broadcast on HBO soon.

Elaine Pyke, Sky’s Head of Drama:

“I really feel that this ambitious co-production highlights the importance of creating compelling original drama for our customers.”

Andy Harries, executive-producer at Left Bank Pictures:

“Strike Back was conceived as a high...
