In the classic Dexter, Julie Benz co-starred as Rita, Dexter Morgan's girlfriend (and later wife). After starring in the first four seasons, Benz had her character shockingly killed off, though she later popped back up for a flashback sequence. Dexter is also known to have visions of other deceased characters, so it was certainly possible for Rita to make an appearance somehow in Resurrection. Clyde Phillips’ Dexter: Resurrection has been reanimating many of the franchise’s most prolific serial killers, including the titular Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), alongside cameos from John Lithgow as Arthur “Trinity Killer” Mitchell, and Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado in the Season 1 premiere. And while they have their freshman season already in the can, there are plenty of other names to throw into the hat.

In conversation with Deadline following the announcement of his first Emmy nomination for his work in HBO Max’s The Pitt, Hatosy reflected on some of the most impactful characters he’s played, including serial killer Boyd Fowler from Dexter‘s fifth season. He noted in our story yesterday that when picking characters, he tries to find something to love about them.

“Absolutely. That was a delicious character. So much going on; talk about layers,” Hatosy said about potentially reprising the role on the new Showtime spinoff.

In the opening moments of Dexter: Resurrection (the first two episodes are now streaming on Paramount+ Premium, and will also air Sunday, July 13 at 8/7c on Paramount+ With Showtime), a bed-ridden and barely alive Dexter is visited by three different ghosts from his past — and boy, were these cameos big.

It’s been four years since we last caught up with Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall). In the sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, we met him living in a small, secluded little town in upstate New York. He was going by the name Jim Lindsay, and he was living a quiet life. He owned a store. He kept up with his fitness. He had a girlfriend—the Chief of Police, no less—and he kept his urges in check.

All that came undone as his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), found him. Dexter was forced to confront his past and to try and pass on something to his son. But it didn’t take long for things to go off the rails. His past surfaced. He faced new challenges. And as the show closed, Harrison took aim and shot his father.

Dexter Morgan is back — from the near-dead, no less — and Dexter: Resurrection wastes no time letting us know it’s going to honor the franchise’s legacy while taking things in a new direction.

Whether or not you were a fan of New Blood, this resurrection feels like a return to form. Not because Dexter is suddenly a changed man — he’s still a man at war with himself — but because the show leans into its long history of ghosts, guilt, and gory justice.

Dexter Morgan’s origin story will continue as it’s been announced that Dexter: Original Sin has been renewed for season 2 at Paramount+ with Showtime.

The prequel is set in 1991 and follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness,” reads the official description. “With the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.” A writers room for the new season will begin work soon, with production dates set to be announced later.

Per Deadline, it's been revealed that actor Jimmy Smits has joined Dexter: Resurrection to reprise his role as Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado. In the original Dexter, Smits made his debut as Miguel in the show's third season. Taking a page from Dexter, Miguel ended up becoming a murderous vigilante himself, though he didn't abide by the "Code" that Dexter strongly believes in. By the end of the season, Dexter had killed Miguel, though the character would remain one of the most memorable of the original series' run.

Hall as our beloved vigilante serial killer in Dexter: New Blood, and while he made a brief appearance at the beginning of Original Sin, Dexter: Resurrection will feature his full-time return to the character first made famous in the novels by Jeff Lindsay. As far as prequel series go, Dexter: Original Sin did a fine job of bringing the origin story of Dexter Morgan from Dexter to life. This, most notably, included the building of The Code with his father Harry which shaped Dexter’s vigilante killer mentality for the rest of his life. The series marks the second spin-off in the franchise following Dexter: New Blood, which continued the story years after Dexter left off. As a prequel, Dexter: Original Sin features an entirely new cast of actors playing younger versions of characters from the original, along with new characters. In some cases, there are new actors playing characters seen only in flashbacks in Dexter.
