Ross Kemp has revealed that he sometimes regrets leaving EastEnders.

The actor played Grant Mitchell in the BBC soap for nine years, briefly returning in 2005 and 2006, but has since focused on hard-hitting documentaries such as Ross Kemp on Gangs and Extreme World.

In an interview with The Mirror, Kemp said: "I'm still happy doing what I do, but the older you get the less you want to be taking risks. There have been a few moments where I've thought, 'Why did I ever leave EastEnders?'

"I'm already pushing my body to the limit. I'm not going to be able to do this in a few years' time. So maybe the comfy chair is beckoning.

"I've decided I want to be that boring old man who sits in the corner. At least I'll have some good stories to tell."

When audiences associate the festive holiday of Christmas with TV soaps, it is unlikely they will recall any particularly happy moments. Or very few if they do. It seems a little strange that during a holiday all about togetherness and unity, we can’t help but be enthralled by the bleak happenings unfolding right in front of us on our TV screens year after year. Ross Kemp has compared filming 'EastEnders' to working in war-torn Afghanistan. Letitia Dean - who plays his character Grant Mitchell's former wife Sharon Rickman - is returning to the show for a third time and Ross says people shouldn't underestimate how difficult working on the BBC One soap is. One of the joys of William Wellman's pre-Code output, and one of the pleasure of the pre-Code era per se, is how apparent flaws sometimes just add flavor. The filmmakers of that era were mostly not aiming for perfection anyway, but concentrated on grinding 'em out like sausages, trying to preserve a decent overall quality, injecting some special spicy tang of their own devising whenever possible, but moving onto the next one as soon as they could.

The Star Witness (1931) is bizarre, exciting, funny/unfunny, brutal, and generally off-kilter in a way that makes for engaging viewing. If its qualities were transposed to a modern studio picture, we might find it in some way "unsatisfying," but it can certainly hold up its end of a double bill, as it is doing on Saturday, Feb 25 at the Wellman retrospective at New York's Film Forum.

Yes, 1935 was the year after the Production Code came in. But these are the Daft Days, between Christmas and New Year, when nothing really matters. Besides, this is a film worth writing about, it has a seasonal hook, is full of early thirties atmosphere, social concerns, and a little suggestiveness, and anyway, it's a remarkable fact about pre-Code cinema that virtually none of them take any interest in Christmas.

They do, however, take a good bit of interest in the winter, since winter is something that has to be prepared for if it's to be survived. Ross Kemp has ruled out a return to EastEnders in the foreseeable future, emphasising his enjoyment of television production. Alfie Moon has been named the best-loved EastEnders character of all time in a new poll. The loveable rogue, played by actor Shane Richie, topped a survey organised by takeaway website JustEat to mark the BBC soap's 25th anniversary. Visitors to the site were asked to vote for the Walford character they would most like to share a takeaway with. While the results showed that Alfie is the most popular character, his screen wife Kat (Jessie Wallace) took second place and Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) secured third.
