Last Thursday, Americans celebrated Juneteenth, but south of the Equator, Latin America's largest nation was in a cinephile mood. It was Brazilian Cinema Day, marking 127 years since Affonso Segreto shot what is considered the earliest cinematic depiction of Brazil in film history. A century and change after cameras first glimpsed the Guanabara Bay, the country's having a moment on the world stage. In the space of a few months, we saw such titles as I'm Still Here, The Blue Trail, and The Secret Agent win big at the Oscars, Berlinale, and Cannes. However, within Brazilian borders, other success stories have flourished, largely overlooked by international onlookers. Consider Vitória with Fernanda Montenegro delivering a staggering star turn at 95, and today's subject, the word-of-mouth box office phenomenon that is Homem com H.

You are probably already familiar with Letterboxd, the popular entertainment website and Auckland-based film-focused social platform for diehard movie buffs. The international platform is renowned for its user ratings and movie-centric global lists, such as ‘Top 50 Movies’ lists and the ‘One Million’ watched lists, etc.

Recently, the documentary film Ocean with David Attenborough has not only cracked Letterboxd’s top 50 (which includes documentaries and festival films) but also secured the number one spot on the coveted list. A new biographical musical drama, Homem com H, is now available for streaming on Netflix, bringing the story of one of Brazil’s most influential and provocative artists, Ney Matogrosso, to a global audience. The film, directed and written by Esmir Filho, chronicles the life of the iconic singer, whose career defied political repression and redefined notions of gender and performance in Latin America. The movie arrives on the platform following a successful domestic theatrical run in Brazil, where it attracted more than 620,000 viewers, grossed over R$ 13 million, and became one of the highest-rated films of the year on the review site Letterboxd. While the film’s official title is a direct reference to one of Matogrosso’s most famous songs, it is being released internationally as Latin Blood – The Ballad of Ney Matogrosso. While there is no official award for best title at the Sundance Film Festival (perhaps there should be), “Don’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl!” would surely be in the running. But if the name doesn’t grab you, certainly the evocative trailer, as it comes loaded with an array of gorgeous images all set to the sounds of composer Carlos Gomes, should.

Directed by Felipe Bragança, and starring Eduardo Macedo, Cauã Reymond, Adeli Gonzales, Zahy Guajajara, Claudia Assunção, and Ney Matogrosso, the movie is a love story set against the backdrop of war, and all told with a fairy-tale touch.
