The AACTA International Awards honour achievements in screen excellence across eleven categories. The Awards add a uniquely Australian voice to the international awards season alongside the Oscars, BAFTAs, Emmy's and Golden Globes.

On the evening of May 24th, 2021 the Sydney film and TV community came together at the Ritz Cinemas for a special preview screening of the new Australian documentary "My Name Is Gulpilil'. Following the screening a number of friends of David's took to the stage to share their experiences of David, from a lifetime spent in his orbit.

The story of the inaugural Samsung AACTA Awards began in August 2011 when the Australian Film Institute (AFI) launched the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) and a new Awards program. Although the former AFI Awards (which began in 1958) were typically held annually in December, the inaugural Samsung AACTA Awards were held in January 2012 to integrate with the international awards season that includes the Oscars and the BAFTAs.
