- Tells the story of newly weds Hamid and Salma. They move into a rental flat next door to the local red light district. The flat had been the former home of a well known mujra and qawali singer, Shamshad. Men still come to the door in the hope of seeing Shamshad and do not seem too put out by seeing Salma despite her protestations. The couple struggle to live within the bounds of their own moral code while the earnings of prostitution seem to be flaunted around them. Hamid gets more and more angry and seemingly unable to reconcile his morality with the immorality of the world and at one point beats his wife and then rapes her making her into a 'whore' of his fantasy. The story here bears resemblance to the later 'Ek Chadar Maili Si' by the same director and seems to explore the complex world of women and sexuality as viewed by Indian men: mother, goddess, whore. This film also explores the ethos of prostitution in its reality and as a metaphor for the outside world.
- Major Ram is one of the soldiers from the Indian army who is involve in the war between India and Pakistan; when he is abducted and held as hostage by the Pakistani army the Indian government are unable to compromise due to the fear of Ram losing his life. So Ram's younger brother, Arjun alias Sunny decides to change his name to Salman and illegally enter Pakistan with the intention of freeing his brother. On the way he meets Ruksar Khan and both fall in love but his aggression to free his brother increases and with the help of his beloved he manages to locate the cell Ram is logged in, successfully freeing him only to find himself and his beloved trapped by Pakistani Jihaadis and soldiers.
- After losing his vision during a storm, Carlos lives with his sister, Maria, off of the Indian coast in a fishing village. One day a mysterious young woman, Lisa, enters their lives, followed by a mysterious man, Tony Fernandes. Maria and Tony fall in love with each other, much to the chagrin of Simon, who loves Maria and wants to marry her. Lisa then warns Maria that she has known Tony, they have had an affair together, and he had betrayed her, however, this warning has no effect on Maria. Then a gypsy palm-reader also cautions Maria that she may be headed for disaster at the hands of a stranger. The question remains: who exactly are Lisa and Tony, and what is the reason behind their presence on this fishing community; and whether or not Maria is being drawn into a web of lies and deceit at the hands of Tony?
- Born and brought up in a small village, Vikram alias Vicky comes to Bombay - the big city - to find his fortune. He wants to get rich soon, and he does get lucky when he lands a job with a politician named Masterji. Masterji starts him off with petty crime, just to ensure his capabilities. Through his hard work and dedication Vicky wins the respect of Masterji and his colleagues. Then Vicky is entrusted with a task of subdueing Masterji's rival, Jaya Shetty, which Vicky does. Then instead of disposing of Jaya, he is asked to make friends with him, so as to benefit Masterji, and he does so. But when he ovehears Masterji and Jaya of inciting communal violence, he decides to sabotage their plans. Angered at this, Masterji orders the death of Vicky at any cost. Vicky has nowhere to turn to, except to live in fear for the rest of his life, as sooner or later Jaya and Masterji's men will track him down.
- Bhrastachar tells the story of a disparate group of characters whose lives overlap- Bhavani, a journalist fighting injustice and corruption; Janki a widow who becomes the mistress of local hoodlum Fatte to save her blind daughter; Inspector Ashutosh, to whom Bhavani entrusts Janki's safety and who maintains that even the police can take no action against Fatte, because politicians need hoodlums to remain in power; Purushottam, Fatte's political godfather who tries to win votes by promising the people a fair and an ideal government and Sattar, who, although himself a Don of the underworld, is not a vicious and depraved person like Purushottam and tries to help Bhavani.
- Inder Sen Johar's much publicized comic look at the forcible sterilization program carried out under the orders of former Indian Prime Minsiter, Indira Gandhi, and her son, Sanjay Gandhi, during the dark days of Emergency. Johar comically portrays this story, which was censored and banned for several years by the Government of India, and stars duplicates of many popular Bollywood stars, including Anitav Bachchan. Songs (which continue to be banned by the Indian Government) are hilarious too: "Kiski chali hai kahe gaye baat ye pyare Jhulelalan, jaan bachao, kher manoa, lagega sub ka number, dhama dham mast kalandhar, aaj hai koi baher to kal woh hoga andhar..."; "Prabhuji de do ik santann...."; "Kya mil gaya Bhagwan, Emergency lagake nasbandi karake hamari chuthi karake, nasbandi karake hamari bansi bajake...".
- Sapna (Mala Sinha) is having fun meeting his employee Rajesh (Biswajit) as Paro, and then, in the city as Sapna; and Rajesh falls for the simplicity of Paro. His heart breaks when he realizes both Sapna and Paro are one, and he leaves his job, and goes to a remote village, where he once again meets Sapna, but this time, as a would be of local contractor, Diwan Sahab. She is taken hostage by Teja (Dilip Kumar) because of a confusion that she hit his sister. His sister, realizing that Teja would kill Sapna, lets her go, but Sapna doesn't reach back to her cottage. Would Rajesh ever be able to tell her he loved her; more importantly, is Sapna alive?
