An aircraft mechanic takes part in a ruby theft for debt repaying to keep his small factory, but his glide goes wrong on its way home and falls down in a zoo. Little girl Chloe finds him in mistake for an angel. He wants to find the ruby and keeps the children safe from harm, so he pretends to be an angel and lives with Chloe for days. They catch the criminals and return the ruby to police. The mechanic cures Chloe's friend with his own blood, and falls in love with her mother ultimately.

Alice and writer Will Franklyn find themselves pursued by antique dealer Marie Cecile,leader of a secret society indulging in criminal activities,and her assassin ally Paul,both of whom want the books for their own ends. In 1209 the Cathars are overcome and Trencavel is killed along with several others. Oriane,planning to hand the books over to D'Evreaux,offers to marry him but Alais manages to escape and eventually locates holy man Hariff to learn more about the books before being forced to flee again. In the present Audric,an historian writing about the Cathars, produces the ring that everybody is after and tells Alice that she is a descendant of Alais. He also explains that the Holy Grail,far from being the Christian relic and goblet generally assumed,has the power to prolong life for hundreds of years. They go to the caves with the ring and a showdown which ties up all the loose ends.

In modern Carcassonne archaeologist Alice Tanner is drawn to entering a cave where she finds mysterious symbols and a ring with a labyrinth inscribed upon it. Putting the ring on her finger she faints but when she comes to,has a vision of the place some eight hundred years earlier when Alais Pelletier de Ma,a member of the Cathar religious sect,lived there. In the present Alice is questioned by the police about the ring but in 1209 Simon de Montfort and Guy D'Evreau are advancing on Carcassonne with an army,ordered by the pope to wipe out the Cathars as heretics. Alais's father is the guardian of a book which holds the secrets of the Holy Grail and,for safe-keeping, gives her the ring with the labyrinth on it as it is a symbol of the Grail. However she is betrayed by her jealous sister Oriane and,as Alice continues to hear voices from the past,the army prepares to attack.

Concurrently, Michael struggles to maintain his secret as the town prepares for a sacred ritual to demonstrate their unwavering faith.

Alex goes into the asylum to retrieve a key, while Michael makes a sacrifice.

His welcome in New Delphi running thin, Alex takes a dangerous step in his hunt for Gabriel as he, Noma and Riesen uncover the truth behind Julian's origin. Claire and Gates got toe-toe with a tenacious assassin as David attempts an alliance with the revolting V1's. Following a turbulent reunion, Michael and Gabriel strike a deal to extract Alex from New Delphi, his fate far from determined.

Claire desperately navigates the fallout of Civil War as Gates Foley travels behind enemy lines to kill a broadcast that threatens peace in Vega. Finally, David procures his role in the rebellion following correspondence with an unsuspecting ally.

With the threat of the New Delphi army hot on their trail, Alex finds unexpected shelter in which to nurse a wounded Noma. Meanwhile, Michael & Gabriel attempt to escape their mutual captivity while revisiting a past that haunts them both. Lastly, Claire calls for a dangerous parlay as David puts a plan in motion to secure his legacy in Vega.

Meanwhile, a military standoff ends in disaster, forcing Claire to make a harrowing decision as Lady of the City. Finally, an unexpected face wanders the broken streets of Vega, claiming to be The Chosen One.

As Alex, Noma and Michael hit an unexpected roadblock in their trek home, Claire makes a judgment call that threatens the security of a war-torn Vega. Meanwhile, Julian changes tactics in an attempt to break Gabriel while Arika and Gates wrestle with the cost of survival.
