In the 1960s, a black couple flee persecution in the United States and find asylum in Ghana, where they meet Kwesi, who supports them to preserve their freedom.

In the 1970s, a man known as John Africa founded a controversial Black separatist organization in Philadelphia called MOVE. Members lived in communes according to the lifestyle of Africa, which included free-thinking, a strict raw food diet and deep respect for all living things. As MOVE gained influence, it attracted the attention of Philadelphia law enforcement. In 1978, a shootout between MOVE and the West Philadelphia Police resulted in the death of one officer and sent nine MOVE members to prison. On May 13, 1985, the City of Philadelphia bombed the MOVE headquarters, resulting in the death of six adults and five children.
