A lone fisherman encounters a seemingly abandoned yacht in an eerie fog bank. Whilst trying to do the right thing the most inexplicable and terrifying nightmare begins.

Yumiko Haruno works as a waitress at a cafe that has been around for a long time. She spends her days aimlessly and without a dream for her future. On an ordinary day at her job, Yumiko notices middle aged man Ichirou Haga looking intently at shunga (Japanese erotic paintings that were popular during the Edo period). He suddenly talks to her and asks her what shunga is to her. Yumiko becomes interested in the eccentric shunga researcher and he invites her to visit his home to learn more. After his wife passed away, Ichirou has lived a reclusive life and concentrated solely on his study of shunga. Yumiko visits his home and begins to take shunga lessons from him.

Not only is Kamakura-based Masakazu Isshiki a mystery novelist, but he is also a good detective himself. His wife Akiko and he are acquainted with all manners of creatures and gods who are of, from or passing through the town. Dealing with and tackling his cases means he can use all the help he can get.

Machiko becomes hooked on the reaction she gets, something she could never get in the real world, and her posts become increasingly daring. She eventually meets one of her followers, a younger man named "Yuto". Machiko becomes drawn to Yuto, who, like herself, harbored feelings of unfulfillment.

In this story of a good cop going rogue, we travel with Yoichi Moroboshi from his university student days to his becoming an ambitious detective on the beat who is using his brawn rather than brain to get what he wants and to where he wants to go. The lines between good and illegitimate are blurred as the detective gets closer to his assignments.
