      A Lethal Pride

      (1960)
      196030mTV Episode
      7.2 (30)
Clay Barton (Ronald Nicholas) is riding along, stops his horse when he sees Carmela (Marianna Hill) swishing her feet around in a large puddle in the road. He tries to flirt with her but her father Arriaga (Gregory Morton) appears and starts beating him with a large stick which Clay then gains control over and beats Arriaga into unconsciousness. Clay then grabs Carmela giving her a forceful kiss and then, it appears through innuendo later, that he raped her, but she is Mexican and not too many people are interested in justice for her. The scene shifts to Arriaga chasing Clay's father John (Ted de Corsia) out of a saloon and threatening him with a rifle. Tate appears and steps in between them. He disarms Arriaga with a kick and we find out Arriaga has hired Tate to avenge his pride. But Arriaga is irritated when he finds out that Tate won't just kill Clay. Tate wants to give Arriaga what he paid for and the next day rides into town. The town Marshall (Jack Orrison) tells him to leave and six other men threaten him to do the same. Tate is determined to bring Clay to the County Seat and justice. Clay is holed up in the saloon with father and a number of men protecting him. An oddly played preacher (Kelton Garwood) shows up in the saloon for a bit of banter. In a ruse, Tate forces a man at the saloon's entryway to call for Clay to come outside. Clay does and Tate forces him into a nearby barn while Clay's protectors wait outside. Soon, the barn door opens and a horse-drawn wagon with Clay holding the reins and Tate standing with a rifle to Clay's head comes rolling out. Not wanting to risk Clay's life the townsmen let the wagon pass. The trip to the County Seat is 2 days and the townsmen follow. Tate decides to head to Arriaga's place instead as it is closer and more manageable for him. Tate tells a happily waiting Arriaga that Tate is still going to take him to the County Seat but will do so at night with horses from Arriaga. Arriaga argues at first but then agrees. Clay now sees Carmela again and she verbally chastises him. Meanwhile the townsmen have followed and they are outside. Clay with Tate goes outside and tells his father that he is going with Tate to face his fate. Arriaga thinks that instead Tate is giving Clay back to the townsmen. Arriaga grabs a rifle and runs out on the porch yelling, "I am Manuel Arriaga, a man" firing his rifle but Arriaga is shot and killed. The show finishes with a small funeral for Arriaga. The preacher shows up again and says a few words for a bit of money but says he will give the deluxe eulogy for more money. Tate declines and says that the only thing left to say is what Arriaga said earlier, "Manuel Arriaga, a man." Tate and Clay ride off to meet Clay's fate. The End.
