I would have ranked this higher, were it not for the ridiculous hype on the jacket and the annoying Editor's letter at the front; all of which tell me that is book will change my life, that it's a masterpiece. This book stands on its own without needing it.

I also pretty fundamentally disagreed with the assertion that "it's hilarious - although the scene on the African beach is horrific".

This is not a 'hilarious' book - it is one of the most challenging reads I have had this year. It tells the desperately tragic story of three people - two English and one Nigerian whose lives coincide in the most terrible way.

Asylum and immigration in the UK are controversial topics in which media hysteria continually advocates that most asylum seekers are bogus. This book, which has been obviously extremely well researched, lays bare that lie; in a tight, devastating and tragic tale.

Yes, this is a book that carries a very strong message and yes, this is a book that deserves to be read. Just try not to get too angry about the hype surrounding it - the subject deserves better.

Tanya I agree that it wasnt terribly funny but there were a few memorable moments relating to batpoo that i recall. The hype on the jacket was what tempted me to read it after reading good reviews though so i disagree on that one.

Laurie Well said.

🥀 Rose 🥀 I, too, agree with this reviewer. I was expecting something "huge" at the end. It distracted me from the journey the story was taking me on. The story stood on it's just fine w/out the hype.

Madeline Bishop I totally agree.

Precious Williams Nail just got hit on the head :)

message 6: by Robin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Robin Cicchetti Glad I wasn't subjected to any jacket hype. I had the pleasure of stumbling into this book. From the US, I think this is a very important book that NEEDS to be hyped. I'll be pushing it on my reading community. It will stick with me for a very long time.

message 7: by Patty (new) - rated it 3 stars

Patty I am halfway through the book. I didn't read the back cover till just a little bit ago. I sat there wondering if some of the reviewers had read the book or if I was just missing the funny parts because they were in the second half of the book. Somehow I just don't see a lot of funny things coming on.

message 8: by Nancy (new)

Nancy So glad I hadn't heard the hype or read the jacket...hilarious????? It was given to me early in its life. I really appreciated the story, but would call it dark, very dark.

message 9: by Kate (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kate Don't believe the hype. Agree. Hilarious, not at all.

message 10: by Paula (new)

Paula P. I just bought it today, and I have to admit that the hype kind of made me wonder what the book is about. Good thing I read these comments before starting to read.

Mostly on Storygraph Yeah that was just bizarre to me - completely sensational. It made me question the book itself, or why the author and publishers would have considered it.

message 12: by Marisa (new) - rated it 3 stars

Marisa Yup.

Dying to know who on Earth thought this book was "hilarious" because that person needs to get a clue!

Katie Mcsweeney Patty wrote: "I am halfway through the book. I didn't read the back cover till just a little bit ago. I sat there wondering if some of the reviewers had read the book or if I was just missing the funny parts b..."

I am surprised that other people did not find this book as funny as i did. Yes it is very sad and horrific but the more upsetting aspects are constantly countered by small witty observations mostly coming from Little Bee and Charlie.

Katie Mcsweeney Marisa wrote: "Yup.

Did you honestly not find any humour in it at all? I understand that the subject matter is deeply upsetting but i did find bits of this book very funny, (perhaps not "hilarious") and other bits were heart wrenching.

message 15: by Jacki (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jacki Leach I didn't find it 'hilarious', either, but the scenes with the little boy were very sweet.

message 16: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen nothing hilarious about this book at all

message 17: by Lisa (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lisa The only thing close to hilarious for me is the description of the movie Top Gun and a suggestion for a new title - all from little bee's perspective. Other than that the story is very sad and tragic.

Kristin There were a few things that were mildly amusing, but hilarious? Not at all. And, I totally agree with you about the "don't tell anyone what this book is about" nonsense. I cut a star off my review for the exact same reason.

Jessica Your ratings are totally unfair. You can't judge a book based on how other people describe it. It's like you're rating the reviews instead of the actual story.

message 20: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen McLeod I agree that it wasn't hilarious (I didn't actually find it funny at all, but I never read the book cover and never expected to) but that's kind of an unfair reason to deduct a star.

message 21: by Deanna (new) - rated it 4 stars

Deanna Perkins Your're right. I don't remember ever laughing.

message 22: by Liz (new)

Liz I agree, the blurb was a bit hyped up, although it did grab my attention and made me want to read the book. But I would have wanted to read it just as much, if not more, had the blurb just described the story. It was gritty, challenging and about very pertinent issues - I am involved in several asylum seeker support groups, and it all rang true. Many people would benefit greatly from reading it - sadly, too many people believe the media hysteria about asylum seekers. So I wouldn't call the book "hilarious" either, although I did have a chuckle at the scientific observation of the "bat shit" paragraph.

message 23: by Liz (new)

Liz P.S. My copy was called "The Other Hand" - why the different titles?

message 24: by William (new)

William Funny. It appears you judged a cover by its book ... just saying, I doubt the author wrote the cover.

As to the rest of your review, brilliantly said.

message 25: by Kari (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kari Winder Definitely not a hilarious book. Even the Batpoo scene wasn't all that funny, because it was interrupting a sadly unsatisfying moment between Sarah and Andrew that spoke of the deep troubles in their relationship.

message 26: by Andrea (new) - rated it 5 stars

Andrea Bennington I rarely give any books I have read 5 stars, but I loved this book. It is a book about many things and as the cover of my copy says “We don’t want to tell you what happens in this book. It is a truly special story and we don’t want to spoil it.” I, too, do not want to spoil it, fans of Yas Gyasi’s Homegoing or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’ s Americanah, and, Half a Yellow Sun, May enjoy this novel.

message 27: by Sarah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah Barlow I found this book clever, I enjoyed the descriptive writing and the use of imagery. Has it changed my life like the editor’s letter suggests it will? No, but I enjoyed it and admired Chris Cleave throughout.

message 28: by Donna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Donna Polanski I think I may have chuckled once, but definitely not hilarious or remotely funny.
