Oh jeez. This was a mess. This was the first book in this series to actually have a plot, but it was the most awkward jumble of half-formed ideas that I’ve ever read. There was so much going on that none of the storylines were dealt with in a way that went deeper than surface level. In particular, the part with Thanatos was completely pointless. He was there to basically (view spoiler)[add to the relationship drama and give Alex powers at the end (hide spoiler)]. The way his character was dealt with was so anti-climactic— here one second and gone the next. Along those lines, I also had a huge problem with what happened to John. (view spoiler)[How does a death deity with supernatural powers get bested? There was basically zero risk in the plan, but John ended up getting killed by the furies and soul harvested by Thanatos. I found it extremely difficult to believe that John couldn’t have just blinked his way out of danger before a fury could drown him or whatever (hide spoiler)]. I’m sorry, but I just didn’t buy into that situation at all and it kept nagging me throughout the entire book.

Overall, I did have fun reading this, but I have to admit that most of how this was written was horrible. I’m just generally confused by all the things that went down. In terms of the ending itself, I thought that it was a little too conveniently wrapped up. While I know that seems like a stupid thing to complain about, the fact that everything worked out perfectly for everyone came off kind of forced and unrealistic to me.
