Every reviewer and critic absolutely loved this book, and I went into it wanting to rate it 5 stars. In fairness, it was really great in most parts. The thing is there are other books out there that I've liked better, so I just couldn't go there myself. It's really good; I'd totally recommend it. I just don't think it's one of the best books I've ever read.
The book begins with one of the sisters in our story in modern times, with the rest of the story told in flashback. I spent my time guessing who it was, and the author did a good job of keeping it a mystery until the big reveal at the end. The irritating thing for me is the way the author resolved that part of the story. I won't reveal that here because it would be a huge spoiler, but see if you don't feel the same way.
The other thing that felt really contrived was the storyline of Isabelle's love affair. It was very much like a cheap romance novel with hearts pounding and instant affections that are always there despite barely seeing each other at all through the novel. It just wasn't really well developed or believable for me.
Otherwise, total thumbs up for this novel. If you're looking for some historical fiction to dive into, pick it up. It's really well told and based upon real events.
