This book was promising at the beginning, but proceeded to get sloppy and puzzling, and then ended in an unsatisfying and unclear way. It's a convoluted plot involving a Polish Jew who falls completely for a childhood girlfriend, writes a book about her, and then is separated from both by the Holocaust. Not knowing the book was eventually published by the friend to whom he gave it for safekeeping, he now lives his old age in New York, lonely and waiting to die. His story is interwoven with that of the friend who took the book and published it under his own name, and a young girl in New York who was named after the heroine of the book and goes searching for her namesake.

The chapters involving Leo, the author of the book, are well written and intriguing, very well (I imagine) reflecting the mindset and cranky humor of an old codger. The chapters about Alma, the namesake, are short, choppy, and disjointed, often going off on tangents that don't seem to have much to do with the plot. Then towards the end of the book, we all of a sudden start getting chapters written as diary entries of Alma's little brother. The odd change in format is an interruption to the flow, as is the final part of the book in which Alma and Leo finally meet; the POV switches rapidly back and forth between them, which I found slightly irritating. The ending was a bit of a let down after all of the buildup--perhaps I am not smart enough to understand it.

Judy U Glad I am not alone in being confused. I spent a lot of time thumbing back through the book to determine what I had missed. Maybe both of us aren't smart enough to "get" this book, but I think we may not be alone.

Andrea I thought the same thing! I kept looking back, and then trying to just go forward, hoping that it would suddenly become clear. I feel like I missed something important... that may not have been in the text at all!

d4 I would highly recommend Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close instead of this novel--although there is the chance reading this book first might make Foer's novel less impressive simply because of the similarities. Foer's writing comes together at the end though. His style complements the plot instead of detracting from it.

Jamie I also felt like that! I really liked the first chapter and then felt like I wasn't smart enough to get what was happening! I thought maybe it would come all together at the end, which did, but not very well.

mentalexotica Ditto to every single point you made.

Diane thanks...I am at the chapters about Alma, and was TOTALLY confused as to who the hell was writing.....

Andi (A Literal Hottie) I feel the same way...thinking am I just not smart enough to understand this "deep" story... Perfect review!

Emily Langston So glad I am not the only one. Completely agree with everything you mentioned!

message 9: by Wendy (new) - rated it 2 stars

Wendy Yes! I loved Leo's POV but kept getting frustrated with Alma's. I ended up quitting halfway through and looking up the plot online. Glad I did so! There just wasn't enough here to hook me.

Tricia Yes, yes, yes! My sentiments exactly. Loved the Leo chapters and his character, not as enthralled with Alma and her choppy diary entries. By the last third of the book I was completely confused as to who was who and how they were related in terms of the story. It did not seem cohesive at all and I checked on here for the sole purpose of justification in my confusion. Thank you all!

Betty Agree. I'm half way through and holding on by a thread with half-hearted interest. I wrote a part-way-through review and searched for others giving it 2 stars to see if anyone had similar thoughts. Guess I'm not alone. The lack of continuity is very disrupting to the flow. I don't like to force myself to maintain interest in a book which is what's happening. Hence, I'm on Goodreads, instead lol.

Whitley I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one. I'm 2/3 of the way through and can't bring myself to finish - which is truly a rare occurrence for me.

Sarah Agreeeeed!

message 15: by Erin (new) - rated it 3 stars

Erin I totally agree. it did nit come together well at the end. I don't feel astonished or deeply moved. it has its good moments and the story of the book itself was great...but im left feeling like I did not gain much from this novel.

message 16: by Jenna (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jenna Richmond Totally agree! I ordered this book because of it's many amazing reviews, was let down. Very bland, really disliked the Alma chapters.

message 17: by Rick (new) - rated it 2 stars

Rick Tuazon Agree confusing irritating and disappointing esp the ending

message 18: by Lesr (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lesr yes.

message 19: by Anna (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anna Thank you! I thought I was the only one. I keep trying only to feel confused and like I’m being led down one turkey trail and then another. I think it’s time to skim.

Alison Macfie Agree. I really wanted to like this book but in the end had to force myself to finish it. Unnecessarily complicated I felt

message 21: by Julie (new) - rated it 2 stars

Julie Your review is very well said. I agree 100%!!!

message 22: by Donna (new) - rated it 2 stars

Donna I agree with your assessment! I sped-read the last half of the book because I was impatient with all of the things that seemed so unnecessary

message 23: by Jessica (new) - added it

Jessica I’m right at the beginning and I can’t seem to get into it

message 24: by Erin (new) - rated it 3 stars

Erin Completely agree!! So much text that never went anywhere!! I am left so confused!! So Bruno was an imaginary character, and what’s up with the letter that he received from Alma to meet him in the park that she never sent but somehow she got one from him?! 🤯
I like the idea of this book, but it was very poorly executed!!

Sherry I 100% agree

Leticia Rae It’s good to find people who felt the same way I did. The end was a let down for me as well.
