Wow this book was just phenomenal. 5 stars is really the least I could give for this incredible modern history of the middle east, Black Wave by Kim Ghattas. Ghattas somehow takes the past 40 years of social and political change in the region, shifting religious values and war and synthasizes it into an incredible readable story that is completely centred in personal experiences of the people who lived through the changes. I loved that this book is completely centred in a non western viewpoint, as I feel I've heard about this conflict my entire life through a very western lens. If you read a non fiction history book this year, make it this one!...more
