It is also a tale of artificial people learning to feel. That part was good but it is more like a short story than a full novel. And there are too many short sentences such as:
"The mimic turned her head - not toward SYN. Toward him And she smiled. Soft. Warm. Empty." Also:
"She didn't enter. She arrived. Like a thought formed out of silence."
It might sound a bit poetic, but it fast becomes irritating.
But as a first wiring...not bad , if it was fleshed out more, and had some adventure, not just all the wishy washy feeling stuff I'd enjoy it more.
This author is one to watch in future though I think....more

But it was great! Henry a layabout Earls son, his sister Felicity who secretly read medical textbooks disguised as romances, and Percy his dark skinned sort of cousin and best friend (and BF) go on a trip, a last tour of Europe before he is doomed to settle down and learn the estate with his cruel father, Felicity is to be sent to a finishing school and doomed to sew, look pretty and marry and Percy, well it turns out he has epilepsy.
In the 1700s this wasn't a minor illness, this means he will end up in an asylum, subject to the horrors the mentally ill were back then.
But....things happen. A theft, highwaymen, pirates, an alchemists key...and the adventure is on!!
I am reading the next in series now, well worth your time for sure, and not your usual young persons boring book....more
Not a fan of romance. I read it because I'd started the series. I had hoped we'd get more action and stuff, like why and how the god died.

But no. This is the gay book. Galen (a paladin), Piper (a magical bone doctor)
Earstripe a gnole was my fav character. But then the gnoles were good fun in all the books. I do like the White Rat world, just be ice if there was more like Clockwork boys and less of the hard out romance. 3 stars...much like the last book......more

It's quite This wasn't bad. Primarily a murder mystery, with various friends - students at Oxford university - and how they were and are all affected.
It's quite twisty, not so much who did it, but what secrets they all had. I dislike romance and hesitated over this, but I wanted to see if it was really that one who did it so continued.
And the romance aspect didn't intrude too much, it wasn't a they meet, they live happily ever after type romace.

It's a pity, the magic was great, the mage is not a spell worker, he's part human, part something and the magic is innate. It was very poetic, reminiscent of McKillip.
But sadly the romance takes first place, they meet, they - well you know how it goes. MM romance, but follows the usual scenario.

In this care it's an end of war/after the war book. This part was good, I enjoyed it, but it rapidly became the Romance. One of them has quite bad shell shock, the other has nothing at all, no shock, injuries and it becomes about how they meet again later and how they overcome problems to be together.

It's a book of reincarnation and the two have and have had their lives entwined together since the 600s? This time it hasn't worked out that they are together but Ferney thinks he can fix that.

Kyra found magic six years ago, sacrificing her relationship with her father and getting herself cast out of her family, but now returns because visions have warned her that her younger sister Alix is soon to die.
It's a book of strong women: Kyra, her mentor and tutor Rosamond, Kyra's mother, initially seen a s scatty chatterbox but has more to her than thought. Even Alix herself in the end, choosing love over her fathers plans to better their position.
And of course the romance, or should that be romances? I loved the magic, and the sneaking past the Inquisition... A good read.

I'm not fond of romance. Sadly this is mostly romance. And I am really tired of these paladins moping about and apologising for every thought they have. Worse, the romances all consist of both parties angsting oh X couldn't possibly like me (both of them) for ages. Do they think this is normal? I don't know mine was simple, come out with me? Sure ok. Happily together for years thereafter.
It was slightly cute in the first book , less cute this time round.
The most interesting bit was the bear , pity that wasn't the main part of the tale.
