This story was just an ok read for me. No character development means no reason to care about what happens. I unfortunately already bought all the books in this "series" so I'll probably read them eventually, but I won't be in a rush to do it....more

The four childhood friends are reunited at Merle House, but Claire and Ian serve no purpose. The resolution is all tell and no show. The book attempts to wrap everything up, but there are still quite a few loose ends in my opinion.
Overall, I liked the book, but I think attempting to break it down into four shorter installments hurt it in the end. The final chapter could have used another 30 or 40 pages to help flesh everything out. I feel like there was definitely a page limit to stop it from going into another installment or keeping any installment from going too long.
I'd give the entire series/book an overall 3 star rating. I liked it, but it could have been better. ...more

We get introduced to another member of the childhood quartet of friends while Matthew's story continues. There's a decent amount of back story that gets filled in, as well. Looking forward to see where this goes.
Still not sure about the format of these stories. Serialization doesn't really make sense when all the parts are released at once. Then again, I probably wouldn't have paid $8 for the book, but happily bought four short stories for $1.99 each....more

I was expecting stand alone, interconnected short stories, but this seems more like part one of a book. This one ends on a cliff hanger, so not sure if it will be resolved next book or later on.
This is my first Lisa Unger book. I really liked the writing style. It quickly draws you in, even if you don't know where it's taking you. I'm here for the ride and definitely want to see where the story is going. So far, the story seems part haunted house, part mystery/thriller. If the other three parts keep up the quality of this first one, then it should be a pretty good story.
I'm giving it a tentative 3 stars for now. I may revise that and rate all of these as one book once I've read them all....more
