This month my surprise selection is another longshot On the Beach by Nevil Shute. IMO Shute is one of the best 20th century authors to ever put pen to paper, yet he is practically unknown. Nevil Shute’s books tell stories of ordinary people being placed in extraordinary situations and most of the time they prove equal to the challenge.

In this case man has destroyed himself and the few remaining survivors are awaiting the end. Shute doesn’t give us the Road Warrior apocalypse of panic, violence, and murder. Shute chooses to have humans face their destruction with a resigned dignity. I found it admirable.

I will vote for On the Beach. Read it some years ago. 5 stars. One of those books I think about often.

I agree with comments about On the Beach. It was a fantastic 5 star book. Another of his excellent books is A Town Like Alice. I have not read Trustee from the Toolroom yet but it is on my list to be read. I heartily recommend voting for this selection.
