The Next Best Book Club discussion

I'm looking for a suggestion for my Fantasy book group. Last month we read Tithe by Holly Black. We've read some Kelly Armstrong, Jonathon Carroll, etc.

We prefer stories set in contemporary settings. I'm personnally not much on dragons and wizards and such.

Any suggestions?

I'm gonna cheat. Because even though I've read three or four books that folks frequently refer to as Urban Fantasy(American Gods,The Little Country,The Anubis Gates) I'm still not sure I really know what constitutes that genre and what does not.

I think most Charles deLint would fit into this category, and I love his books!

Neil Gaiman would be great for this too.

I really enjoy Jim Butcher's Dresden files series. The first book is OK (but might be a bit much on content for a book group). The rest of the books in the series are fantastic. I believe this is the first book in the series about a wizard in present day Chicago.

I loved City of Bones-It is the first of a trilogy.

I'm a big fan of Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series (starting with Moon Called) and her spin-off Alpha and Omega series (starting with Cry Wolf).

There are a few groups on GR dedicated to Urban Fantasy that MIGHT give you some ideas. My problem is they tend to be too paranormal romancey really more then Urban Fantasy. That said, some great Recommendations here so far Dresden Files are great. I am perhaps the biggest F Paul Wilson pusher around.OH, I also just bought Moon Called after reading just the first chapter online at her website, seems really promising as well.

World's End I just finished. It is in present times and deals alot with Celtic myths and legends,coming back to power and eclipsing science. Book one in what I think is a 6 book series but I enjoyed it.

I love the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. They are pretty easy reads, but very entertaining. They center around a modern day wizard in Chicago, and I found them to be quite funny.

I just wanted to put a word in for one of my favorite series, which happens to fall into the Urban Fastasy category. I haven't read much other urban fatasy though, so keep that in mind.

I really love the Nightlife books by Rob Thurman. The main character is a half-human, half-monster currently living in New York City. His monster "family" is hunting him down to use for their own purposes (which involve the end of the world as we know it). I really like the snarky humor and the banter between the brothers. This is the book I push on all my friends to read.
