Gina (granolagina) I can't believe Hollywood hasn't made a Bosch movie yet. Who would you like to see play Harry?

message 2: by Wayne (new)

Wayne | 17 comments A Harry Bosch TV project is in the works for the fall, hopefully on HBO. I've always imagined Stacy Keach as the exact right guy to play Harry, but he's too old now. As long as it's not Tom Cruise, I'll be ok.

message 3: by Gina (new)

Gina (granolagina) Oh no, I have Showtime. HAHA
Good to know.
Cruise is too good for tv, thankfully.

message 4: by Gina (new)

Gina (granolagina) I am glad it will be on pay cable instead of network television.

message 5: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy I know of 2 of Michael Connelly's books, Blood Work and The Lincoln Lawyer that have been made into Movies. Not Harry Bosch but we can hope.
The Mickey Haller character is Harry's half-brother and Harry has connection with Terry McCaleb, played by Clint Eastwood in BloodWork movie, in later books.
I sincerely hope they can get someone we can approve. Matthew McConaughey played Mickey Haller wonderfully and Eastwood was a great Terry McCaleb although the studio did change the ending. That was discussed in later books.
I look forward to a good movie about Harry!

Erica (blondechick80) | 7 comments Harry Bosch hasn't been made into a movie yet because a long time ago Connelly sold the rights to a film company who couldn't pull anything together. I believe he just got them back hence the tv project.

message 7: by Curlyhair (new)

Curlyhair | 22 comments I love Harry, but sincerely hope they make a really good tv series. The Lincoln Lawyer was very good, so lets hope they make just as good a job as they did for that.

message 8: by Con (new)

Con (conb) | 7 comments @ Sweetie: Actually I absolutely did not like the "Bloodwork" movie, I thought the horribly twisted the story and most of the actors were REALLY bad. Arango... the "mean bully cop" was a comedian, the soon-to-be wife of Terry McCaleb was much too tough and so on and so on.... the ending changed as you mentioned and in a reallly bad way. But the worst actor is the bad guy. Terry's compagnon Buddy turns out to be the "Code killer" the FBI had been chasing for decades.... and he is about as dumb as it gets and 0% frightening psychopath in the movie. Overall: just very disappointing. I can understand why Michael Connelly was upset about the movie!

Con (conb) | 7 comments @all: I have a question for everyone: What do you all read after finishing the Harry Bosch series? I am suffering from the "Harry-desease" and can't seem to find other crime novels I like!
I am looking for LA stuff in particular since I have partly grown up there. I would be very thankful for good recommendations!
Please note: I mostly listen to books downloaded from Audible.
Thank you very much!

Yes, for sure, all true. What about The Lincoln Lawyer? Have you read book or seen movie?
Also Robert Crais has a series that is set in L.A., about private detective and partner is ex-cop.

I'm a big audiobook person too, only I get them via my library's e-collection for free downloads. One of the readers early in the Bosch Series is Dick Hill who is FANTASTIC. Through the library site, I clicked his name and discovered another series that he's read for by Lee Child, The main character is Jack Reacher who is an ex-Army MP who travels all over the country now that he's retired. The first in the series is Killing Floor and I would start there. Child has written some prequels to those, such as one of his more recent ones, The Affair which is set just before Killing Floor, and The Enemy (I think).. Any way, It's a Fantastic series, and you can probably get them for free through your library if they have e-access.

@ Sweetie: Thank you too for the LA connection! I'll check it out today!

yup! the movie is based off of One Shot I'm yet to see the movie though :( simply because I don't get out much!

message 15: by Merle (new)

Merle (merletau70) | 19 comments Whoever they pick, I hope they are able to cast a tall, lanky guy with curly hair. Harry is a very specific type and the actor should actually resemble him (IMHO). I'm trying to put a name to an actor now, who might be the type. Can't come up with one who has the right intensity. Jeremy Renner comes close but he is not the physical type.

Still horrified by Cruise as Reacher and Freeman as Alex Cross, as well as Denzel as Easy Rawlins, good actors all but totally against the physical type of the characters they were playing.

Thanks for bringing this topic up; it's fun to speculate! BTW, The Black Box is pretty involving.

message 16: by Wayne (new)

Wayne | 17 comments Yes, the Reacher movie is adapted from the series by Lee Child. Reacher is one of my absolute favorites, and I am sorely disappointed that Tom Cruise is playing him. I dont understand how Lee Child could have let that happen. I'll definitely never see a Reacher film with Cruise playing him.

I'm in the Reacher Creature group on facebook, and all of those who saw the movie really enjoyed it. sure TC doesnt' fit the stature of Reacher, but they say he nailed every other thing about him

message 18: by Ann (new)

Ann | 1 comments Aiden Quinn could do Harry. They might have to darken his hair, but he can do brooding well, and he's already a detective on "Elementary", so it's not a stretch. About the right age too. I can definitely see him in the role.

message 19: by Merle (last edited 29 mar. 2013 19:21) (new)

Merle (merletau70) | 19 comments Harry is tall and slim, though. Aidan is not that tall. I see someone, maybe like Colin Farrell, although he's not all that tall either. OK - who's a tall brooding brunette actor??

I stand corrected. I saw the movie last weekend, and I really enjoyed it, and yes, I have to say Cruise did a great job of capturing Reacher. I look forward to the next installment, if there is one.

Wayne | 17 comments Merle wrote: "Harry is tall and slim, though. Aidan is not that tall. I see someone, maybe like Colin Farrell, although he's not all that tall either. OK - who's a tall brooding brunette actor??" What about the main white cop on The Wire? I think his name is Dominic West. He's Australian, but does a great American English accent, and could no doubt nail Bosch as well.

Not bad, I had not thought of him. He has the intensity. Everyone, go google him now!

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 11 comments Who I "see" when I read the Harry Bosch series is Chris Noth (Sex in the City and Law and Order). Doesn't match the "tall and slim" description but it was my mind's selection once I got the feel of the character.

I like that one, too. The only objection I can think of is that Chris is just so New York, and Harry is a real California guy, as much as he can be anyway. But that's another good one. Do you think they'll give us consultation rights to the casting?
Merle

message 25: by Merle (new)

Merle (merletau70) | 19 comments Wait, how about Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He's the main character in the series "Magic City" and starred as the ill-fated Denny with Katherine Heigl and the crew in "Grey's Anatomy". He might do the trick - big, handsome, could probably contrive the curly hair.....

We took your suggestion of Jeffery Dean Morgan and Googled his photo montage. BINGO, around our house you have picked the right actor to play Harry. Thank you, we have racked our brains for years and there he was right under our noses.

message 29: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Hughes | 1 comments I think the perfect actor to portray Harry Bosch is Jason O'Mara from the recently cancelled series Vegas.

Jack Reacher is a wonderful character. New book in series coming out in early September. Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are private investigators in LA. Very entertaining series.

Ellen Butler | 4 comments Timothy Olyphant would be a great Harry.

message 31: by Merle (new)

Merle (merletau70) | 19 comments Ellen wrote: "Timothy Olyphant would be a great Harry."

Love Timothy Olyphant. I think, however, he's a little too young for Harry. I like Jason O'Mara too, but the same objection. I still vote for Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I am really enjoying all the suggestions, keep it up!

message 32: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Butler | 4 comments Well Timothy Olyphant is 45 years old. That's gotta be close to the age Harry is at the beginning of the series. Harry is around 58 when Maddie is 13, so working backwards, Harry is in his forties early on, which by the time anyone makes a movies or series, seems to make Olyphant the right age.

message 33: by Randi (new)

Randi I think Timothy Olyphant would be a perfect Harry! He even looks like a bit of a scalawag, which our darling Harry certainly is at times.

message 34: by Steve (new)

Steve In Ludlow (steveludlow) Robert Forster - he played Max Cherry in Jackie Brown. For some reason I always picture him when reading the Bosch novels. I think he fits physically (a bit craggy, powerful and in good shape for an old fella) and I think he can do Harry's moodiness which seems to get worse as he gets older.

Why not try a book by Raymond Chandler or Dashiel Hammett, the originators of the genre. You know they actually met once, briefly. There was a story in the L.A. Times about it last week.

Brock, have you tried Jo Nesbø? His Harry Hole series reminds me of Harry Bosch a lot. Both are twisted and awesome characters, and both authors have the stories filled with many many twists. Both Harrys feel very similar.

I would recommend the Hole series in order.

message 44: by Katherine☕️ (new)

Katherine☕️ (twosweetboys) | 4 comments I've transitioned to the Jack Reacher series. Reacher is not a cop (he's formerly military police) but he reminds me a lot of Harry.

message 45: by Ana (new)

Ana Chavez | 1 comments I love Harry Bosch novels. Have the entire collection. Finally, they are making a movie. But I don't like the actor they picked. He doesn't look like what I imagined Harry Bosch to look like. I think he looks more like Christian Bale, someone tall, dark and handsome. Or even Tomas Gibson. I don't know if I'm gona like the movie, because I don't think the actor portrays what the description of Harry is. If they picked a hunk for Mickey Haller, why not for Bosch?

message 46: by Erica (new)

Erica (blondechick80) | 7 comments The new Bosh Series will be premiered on Amazon Prime sometime this month. Michael has been doing a ton of press about it lately. You can sign up to be on the street team for it, to watch it and give feedback. if you go to michaelconnelly.com you can sign up there I think

FYI: just reading through the comments, and it's not going ot be a movie, and it's not going to be on HBO. A tv series on amazon prime is what's happening
