This scholarship fund was established in 1990 by G. Michael and Marian F. Alder, and is available to declared Biology majors who are finishing their sophomore or junior years. Four scholarships of $3,000 will be awarded towards the cost of tuition. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. This scholarship requires that the applicant/awardee have graduated from a Utah high school, or be a US Citizen, or be a permanent resident (green card).
This scholarship fund was established in 1985 by Stephen D. Durrant, and is open to Biology majors who are finishing their freshman or sophomore years. Three scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to cover tuition. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The recipient of this award may apply for a second year, if funding is available. This scholarship requires that the applicant/awardee have graduated from a Utah high school or be a US citizen or permanent resident (green card).
One award of $2,000 is available to a Biology major engaged in research at the University of Utah in the area of Genetics. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. This scholarship was established in 2018 by the Fujimoto family to honor the memory of Esther Fujimoto and her career as a research scientist in Molecular Biology at the University of Utah. This scholarship is available to declared Biology majors who are finishing their sophomore or junior years. One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded for use towards the cost of tuition. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. Preference will be given to students who are working in a Molecular Biology lab or who are first-generation college students. This scholarship requires that the applicant/awardee have graduated from a Utah high school, or be a US citizen, or be a permanent resident (green card).
This scholarship was established in 2023 by Donald N. and Mary Ann Garner. One scholarship of up to $10,000 will be awarded towards the cost of tuition. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. The ideal applicant is a junior or senior with a demonstrated interest in conservation biology who intends to work in the field of conservation biology such as protecting biodiversity and preserving habitats.
This scholarship was established to honor the career of Mark T Nielsen in the area of Human Anatomy in the School of Biological Sciences. This scholarship is available to declared Biology majors who are finishing their sophomore or junior years and who have demonstrated excellence in their anatomy studies in the School of Biological Sciences. One scholarship of $3,000 will be awarded for use towards the cost of tuition. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. This scholarship requires that the applicant/awardee have graduated from a Utah high school, or be a US citizen, or be a permanent resident (green card).
This scholarship was established in 2025 by Darren W. Housel, M.D. to encourage a student majoring in Biology to pursue a career in research and/or the medical field.

The Churchill Scholarship offers American students of exceptional ability the opportunity to pursue graduate studies (Master’s degree) in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics for 9-12 months at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge, UK. SBS’s Science Research Initiative for undergraduates is augmented by funding to select students.
The School of Biological Sciences is accepting proposals from undergraduates majoring in Biology who wish to participate in a research project with faculty in the School of Biological Sciences. Funding is available for several awards. Awards range in size from $2500 to $5000 and can be spent through December 15, 2026. The deadline for applications is March 6, 2026, at 5:00 pm. Biology Research Scholars Application
Undergraduate students may apply for up to $500 from the School of Biological Sciences to assist with travel costs to attend a conference for which they have been accepted to present their research. The student must be working in an SBS lab to be eligible.
A 15-month mentored research experience for exceptional undergraduate students in chemistry, biological sciences, or interdisciplinary combinations thereof. Provided by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation to the University of Utah College of Science, the program spans three years (2020 – 2023), and will enable the funded support of six scholar–faculty mentor pairs. Each internally selected scholar will receive a $21,000 research stipend to facilitate 15-months of mentored research (nine academic calendar months, two three-month summers), in addition to $5,000 provided for the mentor-directed research.
