The trailer for Walter Salles’ much anticipated On the Road has been officially released online, on the film’s Facebook page. If you get it to work, that is. I wasn’t able to, despite refreshing the page a zillion times. Anyhow, if you don’t get it to work, at least you’ll get the chance to check out the On the Road poster (above).
Starring TRON: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund, Control’s Sam Riley, and Breaking Dawn – Part 2’s Kristen Stewart, On the Road is expected to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. For now, the film based on Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel is still awaiting a US distributor. The film is scheduled to open in France and Belgium on May 23.
In addition to Hedlund, Riley, and Stewart, On the Road features Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Alice Braga, and Elisabeth Moss. Terrence Howard and Steve Buscemi apparently have cameos in the film.

“Desirous of everything at the same time,” is how Dean Moriarty is described in the latest character poster for Walter Salles’ film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. That statement can be read in all sorts of ways – at the same time.
Garrett Hedlund plays the sensual, live-for-the-moment Moriarty, inspired by Kerouac’s intimate buddy Neal Cassady. Married three times – at one point to two different women – Cassady had a two-decade, off-and-on relationship with Allen Ginsberg. (Back in the 1950s, Kerouac wanted Marlon Brando as Dean; the sexually conflicted Kerouac was to have played On the Road’s other male lead, Sal Paradise, a version of himself.)
In addition to Garrett Hedlund, On the Road features the following performers: Sam Riley as Sal, Kristen Stewart as Marylou, Tom Sturridge as Carlo Marx (Allen Ginsberg), Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Alice Braga, Danny Morgan, Elisabeth Moss, and Kirsten Dunst.
Salles’ The Motorcycle Diaries collaborator José Rivera penned the screenplay adaptation. Brokeback Mountain’s Gustavo Santaolalla provided the music.
On the Road will probably premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 16. We’ll now for sure tomorrow, when Cannes festival organizers will be announcing this year’s film line-up.

In Walter Salles’ On the Road, adapted by José Rivera from Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel, Sam Riley plays Sal Paradise, based on Kerouac himself. Kerouac wrote his novel in 1951, though it would be published only in 1957. Around that time, he wanted to play himself in a film version of his book, with Marlon Brando as Dean Moriarty, inspired by Neal Cassady, and brought to life by Garrett Hedlund in Salles’ movie.
In addition to Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund, On the Road features Kristen Stewart, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Elisabeth Moss, and Kirsten Dunst.
On the Road will probably be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, which starts on May 16. The Cannes film line-up will be announced on Thursday, April 19.
Kristen Stewart as Marylou, On the Road poster
Kristen Stewart plays Marylou, Dean Moriarty’s girlfriend, in Walter Salles’ film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel (actually written in 1951) On the Road. Moriarty is played by TRON: Legacy / Inside Llewyn Davis’ Garrett Hedlund.
While Dean Moriarty is a fictionalized version of Kerouac’s intimate buddy Neal Cassady, Marylou is a representation of Cassady’s first wife, LuAnne Henderson. In 1945, the 15-year-old Henderson married Cassady – who had sexual liaisons with both men and women; their marriage was annulled three years later.
Salles’ The Motorcycle Diaries collaborator José Rivera penned the screenplay adaptation. Brokeback Mountain’s Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla provided the music.
On the Road, Salles’ first solo directorial effort since the poorly received Dark Water seven years ago, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, it was announced a couple of hours ago. (Notice the Cannes Film Festival logo on the poster.) On the Road opens in France on May 23. There’s no set US release date/distributor as yet, though that should change soon.
Besides On the Road, Kristen Stewart has two other movies coming out in 2012:
- Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman opens June 1. Stewart’s costars are Thor / The Avengers’ Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, Prometheus / Monster’s Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Sam Claflin as Prince Charming.
- Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which opens Nov. 16. The last installment in the Twilight Saga franchise features Little Ashes / Cosmopolis / Bel Ami’s Robert Pattinson, Abduction / Valentine’s Day’s Taylor Lautner, in addition to Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and/or Breaking Dawn – Part 1 regular cast members Elizabeth Reaser, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, Peter Facinelli, Billy Burke, Michael Sheen, Booboo Stewart, Julia Jones, and Dakota Fanning.
Alice Braga plays Terry, described as the “cutest little Mexican girl,” in Walter Salles’ film version of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. We’ll see how the Portuguese-speaking Brazilian Braga will do as a Spanish-speaking Mexican farm laborer (Bea Franco in real life). Among Braga’s screen credits are Predators, Repo Men, Cidade Baixa / Lower City, I Am Legend, and Cidade de Deus / City of God. She’s also one of the featured players, alongside Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Diego Luna, and others, in Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium.

“These people are mad,” says (one assumes) Elisabeth Moss’ Galatea Dunkel in Walter Salles’ On the Road, to open in France on May 23. Moss looks a little mad herself here, kinda like Bette Davis about to slap Miriam Hopkins in some movie or other. By the way, this is no putdown. This poster offers a great, memorable image of Elisabeth Moss, among whose film credits are Get Him to the Greek, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, and Girl, Interrupted. Moss is also a member of the Mad Men ensemble.
In Salles and screenwriter José Rivera’s film version of Jack Kerouac’s novel, Galatea Dunkel is the wife of Ed Dunkel (Off the Hook / Ideal’s Danny Morgan). The Dunkels are based on Helen Hinkle and Al Hinkle, early members of the Beats.

Tom Sturridge (Effie / Waiting for Forever / Brothers of the Head) is seen above in the latest On the Road “character” poster. In director Walter Salles and screenwriter José Rivera’s film version of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel, Sturridge plays the character Carlo Marx, which sounds a lot like Harpo Marx, but who’s actually Kerouac’s portrait of writer-poet Allen Ginsberg.
Two years ago, James Franco played Ginsberg in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Howl. Next, Daniel Radcliffe will be playing Ginsberg in John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings (2013), costarring Elizabeth Olsen, Michael C. Hall, and Ben Foster as William S. Burroughs (played by Viggo Mortensen, as Old Bull Lee, in On the Road).

Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises / A Dangerous Method) stars in his own On the Road poster. In director Walter Salles and screenwriter José Rivera’s film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel, Mortensen plays the character Old Bull Lee a.k.a. William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch).
Though every On the Road performer is listed below the title, only TRON: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund and Control’s Sam Riley are listed before the “with,” which basically sets them apart as the film’s two official leads. Breaking Dawn – Part 2 / Snow White and the Huntsman’s Kristen Stewart is the first “supporting” player listed right after the “with,” followed by Julie & Julia / The Muppets’ Amy Adams, Effie / Waiting for Forever’s Tom Sturridge, Off the Hook / Ideal’s Danny Morgan, Elysium / Predators’ Alice Braga, and Mad Men / Get Him to the Greek’s Elisabeth Moss. Set apart – meaning they’re special “guest” performers – are Spider-Man / Melancholia’s Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen.

Kirsten Dunst/Camille On the Road poster
If this isn’t an all-out smile, I don’t know what is. Those sparkling white teeth and healthy-looking gums belong to Kirsten Dunst. What a world! What a life! What a dentist!.
I’m assuming Dunst’s is the last On the Road “character” poster we’re adding, as every major On the Road character has already gotten his/her poster. Dunst’s actually came out before the ones for the film’s three leads, Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, and Kristen Stewart. We’re just late posting it.
In On the Road, Dunst plays Camille, the wife of Dean Moriarty (Hedlund), who leaves her behind to go on the road with the much younger Marylou (Stewart). Camille is based on Carolyn Cassady, the first wife of the sexually adventurous Neal Cassady (Moriarty in the novel/film). Sissy Spacek played Carolyn Cassady in John Byrum’s Heart Beat, based on Cassady’s 1976 book of memoirs, Heart Beat: My Life with Jack and Neal. In that film, Nick Nolte played Neal Cassady; John Heard was Jack Kerouac. The 89-year-old Cassady currently lives in England.
Though only 30 (last April 30), Kirsten Dunst has appeared in more than 40 features since the late ’80s, when she played Mia Farrow’s daughter in New York Stories’ Woody Allen-directed segment “Oedipus Wrecks.” Among her most notable roles are those in Gillian Armstrong’s Little Women (1994), Jumanji (1995), The Virgin Suicides (1999), Bring It On (2000), Peter Bogdanovich’s The Cat’s Meow (2001, as Marion Davies), Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and its sequels, Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006), and Lars von Trier’s Melancholia (2011), which earned Dunst the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Dunst will next be seen in Leslye Headland’s comedy Bachelorette, with Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, and James Marsden; in what sounds like a cameo in Ashley Cahill’s Charm; and as the leading lady in Juan Diego Solanas’ romantic drama Upside Down, opposite Jim Sturgess.
Now, remember: It’s Kirsten Dunst but Kristen Stewart. The latter’s first name is spelled like Kristen Wiig’s first name, but unlike Kristin Scott Thomas or Christine Lahti or Christina Aguilera or Christiane Amanpour or Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Or Cristian Mungiu or Cristiano Ronaldo, for that matter. I hope that’s cyrstal clear.

Three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (Junebug / Doubt / The Fighter), looking nothing at all like her fairy-tale princess in Enchanted, is featured on this On the Road poster.
In director Walter Salles and screenwriter José Rivera’s film version of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel, Adams plays Jane, the wife of Old Bull Lee (Viggo Mortensen). Jane and Old Bull Lee stand for, respectively, Joan Vollmer (a.k.a. Joan Vollmer Adams) and her common-law husband William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch). In 1951, a drunken Burroughs shot the 28-year-old Vollmer dead while the couple were living in Mexico.

It turns out that Kirsten Dunst’s On the Road character poster wasn’t the last one for us at Alt Film Guide. Above you can see Danny Morgan as Big Ed Dunkel, a character based on Albert C. Hinkle. Hinkle himself unveiled the poster on his Facebook page earlier today, adding (in a reply to Morgan’s wife), “I am honored to be portrayed by [Danny Morgan]. Can’t wait to see the movie!”
