The remains of built structures located on the peninsula at Lake Mariout were noticed by land surveyors at the very beginning of the scientific research of Egypt. 1 The place called "Marea" was recorded on the first general map of Egypt, AEgyptus Antiqua appended to the Description de l'Égypte, in the first volume of Antiquités (Planches), published 1809. En las últimas tres décadas, la ciudad de Pamplona ha sido objeto de una gran actividad de arqueología urbana, lo que ha proporcionado interesantes contextos en los que se encuentran presentes conjuntos cerámicos bien fechados. En este trabajo se han escogido tres enclaves de la ciudad, que cuentan con niveles datados en la etapa del Bajo Imperio, para realizar una selección de muestras de ollas pertenecientes a una familia de cerámica de uso común, caracterizada por elaborar sus recipientes modelados a mano. Los objetivos del estudio han sido la aproximación a las diferentes áreas fuentes de las que proceden las pastas con las que se han fabricado los recipientes y el análisis de la composición de los residuos hallados en dos de ellos para conocer su contenido. El estudio se ha planteado desde una óptica interdisciplinar, arqueológica y arqueométrica, con análisis petrológicos y químicos. Sus resultados ponen de manifiesto una pluralidad de fábricas cerámicas coetáneas, en el marco de unas intensas relaciones comerciales entre la Tarraconense y Aquitania, que pueden tener en las conservas piscícolas una de sus posibles mercancías. This paper explores the development of pottery technology in the Trieste Karst region (North-East Italy) from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (EBA). It also seeks to identify cultural links with other areas by examining potentially imported vessels. Archaeometric analyses (X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy) reveal significant differences between Neolithic ceramics (Danilo-Vlaška Group) and the majority of Late Copper Age (LCA)/Early Bronze Age (EBA) pottery (primarily associated with the Ljubljana Culture and a few with the Cetina Culture). Neolithic pottery displays consistent characteristics across all vessel types, including coarse grain, prevalent sparry calcite temper, and the absence of grog. In contrast, most LCA and EBA vessels exhibit distinct features such as very fine-grained paste, no sparry calcite, notable use of grog temper, higher quartz, muscovite, and flint content. Notably, from a technological perspective, the analyzed Cetina vessels bear a strong resemblance to the majority of LCA ceramics. The differences between Neolithic and LCA/EBA vessels clearly suggest the use of new raw materials, recipes, and techniques, likely reflecting changes in cultural and social contexts and potential connections with the core area of the Ljubljana Culture.

The presentation shows the (in)dependence of archaeological research strategies in the 20th century on early medieval narrative sources. Medieval narratives represented and continue to represent an important formative factor in the identities, ideologies, and strategies of modern societies, and therefore their reflection can also be observed in the activities of archaeologists.

Предмет овог рада јесу посуде из музејских збирки Музеја Војводине и Градског музеја Суботице, из различитих периода прошлости, а које на себи садрже трагове поправки. Ови трагови се у већини случајева манифестују као парне бушотине без трагова везива, док се на последњем, нововековном примерку, још увек налази жица којом су бушотине спојене. Укупно посматрано, ови примерци омогућавају нам да реконструишемо веома стару праксу поправљања керамичких посуда, тиме потврђујући њихову вредност и за човека који је живео пре неколико миленијума.

Данная монография посвящена описанию истории развития всего комплекса гончарных традиций обжига глиняной посуды и методам их изучения с позиций историко-культурного подхода. Авторы последовательно рассматривают развитие знаний об этих традициях в археологии и этнографии, историю обжигательных конструкций, традиций обжига сосудов и их послеобжиговой обработки, различных обрядов, связанных с обжигом и сохранившихся у разных
народов, и вопрос о том, насколько использование глиняной посуды для приготовления в ней горячей пищи на открытом огне препятствует изучению традиций ее первоначального обжига.

The monograph is devoted to the origins of the entire complex of pottery firing traditions and their research methods. Under Historical-and-Cultural approach the authors consistently examine the development of knowledge about these traditions in archaeology and ethnography, the history of firing
devices, the traditions of fi ring vessels and their post-fi ring treatment, various rites associated with firing and preserved by diff erent peoples, and the question of the extent to which cooking warm food in pottery over an open fi re complicates the study of the traditions of its initial fi ring.

en slijpplaatmonsters genomen om de laagopbouw en samenstelling van de lading te onderzoeken. Het hout is bemonsterd voor houtsoortonderzoek. Op basis van de indeling van de boot en de voorwerpen uit de roef kan een beeld worden geschetst van het leven aan boord. De bemanning verbleef in de roef, een lage, bedompte ruimte van ongeveer 3 bij 3 meter op het achterschip. Hier werd gegeten, geslapen en gewoond. In het centrum van de roef lag een haard. Deze bestond uit twee gietijzeren platen die de bodem en de achterwand vormden. Met koperplaat beklede houten panelen vormden de zijkanten. De haard zorgde niet alleen voor warmte, maar er werd ook gekookt. Erbij lagen enkele turfjes, een haardtang en een pook. Het kookgerei bestond uit drie gietijzeren ketels, een koperen waterketel en verschillende soorten pannen en deksels van aardewerk. Houten tonnen, potten, kannen en flessen zijn gebruikt varing op te doen bij scheepsopgravingen. Daarnaast deden vrijwilligers mee. Ook bij deze opgravingscampagne werden vier proefsleuven dwars over het wrak gegraven. De resultaten wijzen uit dat het om een middelgroot praam-achtig zeilschip gaat van 18,5 bij maximaal 4,15 meter. Het scheepje bestond uit drie ruimtes: een vooronder, een middendeel en een achteronder of de roef, van elkaar gescheiden door houten wanden. Het middendeel was het grootst en werd als laadruim gebruikt. Hierin kon 30 tot ruim 50 m 3 lading worden ingenomen, al naar gelang de soort lading en gewenste diepgang. De roef diende als verblijfsruimte van de bemanning. Mogelijk bevond zich in het vooronder een tweede verblijfsruimte, maar dit deel is bij de aanleg van een kavelsloot grotendeels vernietigd. In tegenstelling tot het onderzoek in 1982 zijn alle vondsten uit de lading verzameld en is een aanzienlijk deel hiervan gezeefd. Het onderzoek leverde een kleine tienduizend vondsten op, vooral stukken en fragmenten, maar ook verschillende complete objecten. Verder zijn ecologische, chemische, Archeologie in Nederland | 2025 | 4 Archeologen worden wel eens gekscherend 'de vuilnismensen van het verleden' genoemd. Dat is niet zo gek, want archeologen graven voor een groot deel spullen op die in het verleden zijn weggegooid. Dat kan zijn in speciaal daarvoor gemaakte kuilen, putten en greppels, maar ook in laagten, rivieren, beken en poelen. In sommige gevallen kwam afval als bemesting op akkers terecht. Slechts zelden wordt een vuilnisbelt opgegraven en nog minder vaak een schip geladen met stadsafval. Dat laatste gebeurde in 2019 in Zeewolde in Flevoland. Deze opgraving levert verrassende verhalen op, niet alleen over het afval en afvalverwerking, maar ook verschillen in welstand tussen vrachtschippers en de producenten van het stadsafval dat ze vervoerden. Early modern alchemy was a complex and
multifaceted phenomenon, a colourful mosaic of activities that
shared the need for specialised apparatus. The importance of
choosing the right equipment is frequently stressed in documents
and examples of such equipment abound in written and
iconographic sources. Archaeological excavations at sites such as
alchemical laboratories and artisanal workshops have unearthed
assemblages of laboratory tools, which provide us with the
opportunity to investigate early modern alchemical practice
through the lens of its material culture. Through the chemical
analysis of the distillation equipment discovered at the 16th-century
alchemical laboratory in Oberstockstall (Austria), this paper
explores the history of the glass vessels that once filled it, how
they were made and where they were sourced from. The results
reveal that laboratory practitioners chose high-quality glass for vials
and distillation flasks, with cheaper glasses being selected for
objects that did not require specific characteristics. The former
group belongs to a well-known manufacturing tradition that copied
the sought-after Venetian crystal in central and northern Europe.
Alchemists wanted perfectly clear glass which would allow them to
see inside the vessels during chemical operations and thus maintain
a better control over the reactions. Using material culture as the
starting point, this paper investigates issues relating to the copying,
mixing, and recycling employed to make glass more desirable for
tools used in laboratory activities all over Europe.

zulema barahona-mendieta -mikaël pesenti -bérangère redon Les premiers résultats ont été plus qu'étonnants 7 : au lieu de l'occupation ptolémaïque attendue (qui est bien réelle, mais apparemment limitée), les fouilles du kôm ont révélé que les US de surface étaient en grande majorité datées de l'époque saïto-perse (milieu vii e -milieu v e s. av. J.-C.), qui elles-mêmes recouvraient, dans un secteur au moins (secteur 2), des niveaux datés de la TPI (viii e s. av. J.-C.). Enfin, des découvertes faites sur le kôm (en remploi dans les niveaux ptolémaïques) et entre le kôm et la nécropole se font l'écho d'une occupation humaine datée du règne de Mérytaton puis de Séthi II (au tournant des xiii e et xii e s. av. J.-C.) 8 . Toutefois, l'élément le plus surprenant ne tient pas à la longévité du site (le toponyme apparaît chez Hérodote au v e s. av. J.-C. et une légende voudrait que la vigne ait été découverte à Plinthine, signe de son ancienneté 9 ) mais bien à la nature des assemblages livrés par les niveaux mis au jour. En effet, le matériel céramique invite à poser en termes nouveaux la question des circuits de distribution des marchandises importées en Égypte de la fin de la Troisième Période intermédiaire jusqu'au début de l'époque perse. Devant l'importance des découvertes, notamment céramiques, il nous a semblé pertinent d'en livrer ici les premiers éléments, et ce malgré le caractère préliminaire de l'étude. Nous avons choisi de nous intéresser plus spécifiquement au secteur 2, qui est le plus vaste des secteurs fouillés par l'équipe, et celui qui a été exploré sur la plus grande puissance stratigraphique. Nous nous concentrerons sur deux contextes significatifs, deux dépotoirs, l'un daté de la fin de la TPI, l'autre de l'époque saïtoperse, et verrons que le faciès céramique de ces deux périodes d'occupation présente des évolutions sensibles. Au terme de la troisième campagne de fouille, conduite en avril 2015, la surface totale du secteur 2 est de 212 m 2 . Il est implanté sur le pan méridional du kôm, de part et d'autres d'un puissant mur d'enceinte (MR 201) construit à la fin du ii e s. av. J.-C. 11 au sommet des pentes du kôm. У статті розглянуто переданий в ДІКЗ «Межибіж» комплекс речей, який був визначений як
приналежний до раннього залізного віку. Для локалізації місця виявлення комплексу пошуковим
загоном Постійно діючої археологічної експедиції «Меджибіж-2000» було проведено обстеження
прилеглої території, зафіксовано GPS-координати та дообслідувано грабіжницький шурф.
Ряд ознак, наведених у статті, дозволили висунути автором думку про можливе милоградо
підгірцівське походження прикрас, що могли бути отримані з грунтового кремаційного поховання.
Розглянуто присутність населення лісової зони в Верхньому Побужжі. Метою статті є введення
матеріалів в науковий обіг та до фондів ДІКЗ «Межибіж», створення підгрунтя у подальшому
вивченні регіону.

This contribution presents a summary data of the ongoing research at the necropolis of Mitza de Siddi in Ortacesus (SU), an inland location in southern Sardinia. The purpose of the paper is to illustrate the cultural characteristics expressed in the funerary events of the ancient rural communities, gravitating in this area during the transition from the Punic to the Roman age. By focusing on the composition of the grave goods found in association with the deceased we aim to highlight the ritual characteristics that manifested, through many reference samples and considering the data on burial types and orientations.

This paper aims to provide a comparative analysis of the spatial use of several features between two phases of occupation at the Bronze Age settlement of Mursia in Pantelleria Island. In the earliest phase of the settlement, referring to the 18th century BC, hut B13 in sector B fulfils a predominantly domestic function, corresponding presumably to a social structure based on familiar units of a few individuals. In the final phase of the settlement, dating to the first half of the 15th century BC, the huts (E1, E2, E3) in sector E show changes in the internal organization and concentration of structures linked to food preparation and cooking, which seem to reflect activities managed at a community level, with the participation of larger social groups than the family units of the first phase. The distribution
and typology of the materials also allow to observe a different composition of the ceramic assemblages between the two phases under investigation: if in hut B13, the presence of tableware and kitchen vessels is accompanied by storage containers, sometimes sometimes large in size, in the huts of sector E it is possible to observe a specific increase and diversification of fire pottery (pans, cooking bowls), always associated with pyrotechnological devices and installations (clay andirons, cooking platforms),which highlight a functional specialisation of “kitchen-huts”.

When it comes to tracing economic relations between territories in antiquity, amphorae are usually the main protagonists due to their nature and volume of export. However, beyond large-scale trade,  other ceramic objects exist which, though more inconspicuous in the archaeological record, reveal  exchanges and shared consumption habits within regions. This is exemplified by a category of drinking cups (vasa potoria) characterised a decade ago in the Severan contexts of Carthago Nova (Cartagena). This study analyses their distribution, which shows significant presence at various points in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula and the Algerian coast, offering a reflection on how these elements help define connectivity between the two shores of the western Mediterranean.

Constructed around 300 BCE, the South Stoa of Corinth, a multi-functional public building, possessed a roof outfitted with of thousands of roof tiles. Over the course of 150 years, some original tiles were damaged and new ones laid in their place. These substitute tiles are similar to but not quite the same as the originals and often possess manufacturer stamps indicative of their "non-authentic" nature. In 146 BCE Corinth was sacked by the Romans and largely abandoned, with the roof likely suffering damage during the initial attack, and decay over the subsequent period of abandonment. At some point during the first century BCE, the entire roofing system of the stoa was replaced by Roman citizen colonial Corinthians. As with the earlier replacements, the Roman roof tiles have functional and decorative elements similar to the ca. 300 BCE originals; however, the manufacturing process differed with ornamentation coming only from molded forms. This paper examines the production and decoration of the South Stoa roof tiles as material evidence for the curation of an architectural and cultural heritage. I will argue that the design of the replacement tiles was a deliberate choice used to evoke the original appearance of the South Stoa rather than employing more contemporary or simpler designs. More broadly, this discussion situates itself within the discourse of cultural heritage concerning the identification of "maintenance", "repair", "replacement", and "reconstruction" in an ancient context. While these are modern terminologies and practices implemented in the conservation and management of cultural heritage in the present, they also can be witnessed in the past.
